Will be at a conference today, probably with limited Net access. Are the CBS Bush documents forger ies? Looks to me as though some legitimate questions are being raised. CBS's responses so far are not sufficient. If they are fake, a whole lot of heads should roll at the network, starting at the top of CBS News. If they're fake, CBS should tell us what document experts it consulted, and should say exactly where it got the papers in the first place. Among other things. An election could turn on this. (In just a bit of the other news, the Army says the CIA kept Iraqi prisoners "off the books" at Abu Graib, probably breaking international law, so that the Red Cross couldn't find them, and the Iraqi situation is a total mess. Employer-paid health care costs are up 11 percent, yet another double-digit increase in a time of almost zero inflation.)

Formerly used primarily by the intelligence community and businesses that are strongly dependent upon research, text mining technologies are now beginning to find more general acceptance. The mounds of unstructured data that have been piling up in companies for decades are growing larger as a result of new regulatory requirements that are forcing companies to retain e-mail and other documents - and to be able to find specific information in them. The key to making text mining work for business -- not to mention the intelligence community -- is striking a balance between accuracy and speed, says Ronen Feldman, chief scientist at text mining software company ClearForest Corp. in New York. In a recent interview with Computerworld's Tommy Peterson, Feldman discussed how text mining technologies work and what promise they hold for business.

Translating XML Documents with xml:tm 01/08/2004 08:49 PM
In order to reduce translation costs in an environment where documentation can change frequently the best answer is the use of translation memory, which works by aligning previously translated text in a target language with the source language. This article describes an improvment, known as "text memory", which allows translation and source text to reside in the same XML document.

Dynamic documents revisited 11/12/2003 05:39 PM
Back in July, when Tim Bray pointed to a best-practices document that the W3C TAG (Technical Architecture Group) gathers periodically in exotic locations to discuss, I was exploring a way of dynamically building views of XML documents in the browser. In a couple of postings (and with some help from Bob Clary) I was able to post a Web page that turned the TAG's Web page into a dynamic outline that can selectively display elements styled as:
  • practices
  • principles
  • constraints
  • stories
  • acronyms
  • ednotes
In addition, it can selectively display:
  • internal links
  • external links
  • paragraphs containing arbitrary text

Converting Word Documents

Converting Word Documents 01/22/2004 02:26 AM

When Word-to-XML Conversion Get Nasty: A good, solid look at Word conversions which drives home an important point: a conversion is as good as the construction of the underlying Word document. If the author used styles well, then it's not so bad. But if the author ran rampant with the font menu, you're in for a rough time.

Like most publishing tools, Word provides users with elegant ways to produce their documents. Features such as style templates, paragraph formats, and table editors make it easy to give documents a consistent appearance, so, in a large part, the ease of conversion will be a function of how well document authors have followed any such guidelines in producing their documents. Consistently-styled Word documents, as well as simple documents (such as memos) can be fairly straightforward to convert.

Combining XML Documents with XInclude

Combining XML Documents with XInclude 04/26/2004 10:59 PM
The spirit of modular programming dictates that you break your tasks up into small manageable chunks. This dictum is as also applicable when producing XML documents. It often makes sense to build a large document from several smaller ones. Some situations that call for this chunking include composing a single book out of multiple chapters, building a Web page out of separately maintained documents, or adding a standard footer such as a corporate disclaimer into document.

The Myth of Documents as Containers

The Myth of Documents as Containers 12/04/2003 10:42 AM
I'm off to NYC - let's hear it for Amtrak! - to give a talk to customers of Pitney-Bowes about why documents aren't really containers of information. Why would we ever think that they were? Perhaps because we've viewed ourselves as containers of information. Plus, we've recently managed to informationalize all of business. But, you know what? Information isn't really the lifeblood of business. Lifeblood is the lifeblood of business. Of course, I'll probably rewrite the whole thing on the train ride down....

In a session entitled Contextualized Data in Document Authoring, John Durant gave a nice overview of how to connect XML elements to the Office task pane. First, the bad old crufty way using VS.NET 2003, and then the good new elegant way using the beta of VSTO (Visual Studio Tools for Office) 2005. In either case, the idea is to animate the task pane with context-sensitive controls that sense and react to navigation within the document. ...
