Olympics Shut Down Online Radio Stream
Of Radio Stations
08/16/2004 02:27 PM
It appears the folks running the Olympics are so focused on controlling (i.e., "selling") the rights to broadcast accounts of the Olympic games that they're forcing some radio stations to shut down their internet streams. The radio stations in question have regular radio broadcast rights for the Olympics, but since they didn't pay up to internet broadcast rights, they need to turn off their internet streams for the duration of the games. Considering the fact that it appears that no one is actually attending these games in person, apparently, the Olympics has decided that they're going to squeeze broadcasters for every last penny. Ah, the spirit of the games.

Let A Million Pirate Radio Stations

Let A Million Pirate Radio Stations
Bloom!
05/07/2004 01:28 PM
Pirate radio stations are nothing new, but one guy is now trying to train more people in how to set up their own pirate radio station (with the more politically safe sounding name: microbroadcasting), with the idea of creating a (radio) wave of civil disobedience about how the FCC allocates radio licenses. Of course, plenty of radio broadcasters aren't too thrilled about this idea and are fighting heavily against it. The pirate stations are mostly breaking the law, and it's unlikely enough of them will show up to make a major difference. Besides, you have to wonder why it's worth bothering with radio anymore. Why not just set up a station online?

Recently, Doc Searls suggested that a use for internet radio could be to broadcast news-like talk shows, generated from posts on blogs. Kind of like All Things Considered, with listeners from your blogroll. Then Mitch pointed out that he's got some of the resources required to make this happen, and is looking for energy. I've some energy to spare, so I've transcribed an evening of thoughts here.

DAVE'S
FAVOURITE ONLINE RADIO STATIONS

DAVE'S
FAVOURITE ONLINE RADIO STATIONS
05/01/2004 11:43 AM
mugLast winter I wrote about the growth of Internet Radio, and many of you told me about your favourite online music sources. As a result, I've started listening quite regularly while I work, enough to have assembled a small list of favourite stations and tools:

Favourite rock music station: Rock Chicks Radio - 128kbps Stereo - All the great women of rock, and interactive: you can get them to add your favourite singer & song to the rotating playlist of about 300 songs, send 'dedications' that will come up everytime your favourite song is played, and vote on songs and increase the amount of play they get.

Favourite African music station: Pan-African All-Stars Radio - 64kbps Stereo - I love modern African music, especially West/Central African soukous. This station plays a great variety from throughout the continent, and they have a very informative website as well.

Favourite Latin American music station: SalsaStream - 96kbps Stereo - Readers know I'm taking Salsa dance lessons (coming very slowly, by the way, but great fun). But I've loved Latin American music for years, and this site has great sound and lots of variety.

Favourite folk music station: Omzig Kicks Ass - 64kbps Mono - Scroll down the list until you find 'Omzig'. As much as I like Hober Radio, this one's at least as good. Great mix of old and modern folk.

Favourite eclectic mix music station: Radio Paradise - 64kbps Mono - This station bills itself as an 'intelligent music' station and plays a wide variety of consistently high-quality, often little-know and rarely-heard music.

Favourite classical music station: InLiv e Katharsis - 128kbps Stereo - Scroll down the list until you find 'Katharsis' (not a 24-hour station so if you don't see it, it's off-air). This is a tough choice, since there are some excellent alternatives from France, Switzerland and Russia. But this station, surprisingly from South Korea, has excellent sound and plays not only an excellent selection of music from Medieval to Contemporary Classical, but seems to pick the best possible performances of each composition. When it's off-air I listen to MagnaTune all-indie-performers' Shoutcast Classical Radio station.

Most unusual station: Radio KanKan - 24kbps Mono - The country of Guinée in West Africa is one of the least-known in the world, but a source of great music (including some amazing electric/tribal instrument fusions). This station and its site play a lot of music and also take a courageous stand against it's government's corruption. Some fascinating local stories, that tell you more about the people of this land, caught between the indigenous, French colonial and Arabic cultures, than you'll ever get in a book. They're also nuts about football (soccer). In French.

Favourite Internet Radio Directory/Player: ShoutCast with BOOMBox. The BOOMBox player is free to download. Access to hundreds of Internet Radio stations (including all of the above), which you can listen to with one click (no need to go through the station's website). Very comprehensive list of stations, and well-maintained. Uses ShoutCast as its streaming system and works best with the sister WinAmp player (which is also free online). Set up your own favourites list and then browse through your favourites with one-click.. Identifies the selection currently playing as you browse. Also one-click recording capability. No annoying ads. I'll never go back to Netscape Radio or Yahoo Radio. If you can't find what you're looking for in the BOOMBox list, the ShoutCast page has more detailed listings and info on the available stations, as well as popularity ratings and one-glance look at what's now playing on all the stations on a particular genre.

Sure beats the hell out of ClearChannel. Check 'em out, tell me what you think, and what your favourites are.

Stations Of The Cross

Stations Of The Cross 06/22/2005 02:58 AM
Stations Of The Cross, a piece on "faith-based" news outlets from the May/June Columbia Journalism Review: "In recent months, evangelical broadcasters have dedicated program after program to bemoaning 'judicial tyranny,' and urging audiences to agitate for the 'nuclear option' — changing Senate rules so Democrats can no longer filibuster and thereby block nominees they oppose....All the while, the dizzying blend of God, news, and politics that he [Pat Robertson] has crafted and honed was bouncing off satellites, winding through thousands of cable systems, rippling over the airwaves, and glowing on television screens across America." Numbers Stations

Numbers Stations 06/22/2004 04:01 PM

Numbers station : A post over at Boing Boing reminded me of the phenomenon of numbers stations.

Numbers stations are shortwave radio stations of uncertain origin that broadcast streams of numbers, words, or phonetic sounds. No one knows for sure where their signals originate or what purpose they serve. The voices that can be heard on these stations are often those of children, or are mechanically generated.

Numbers stations appear and disappear continuously, although some stick to regular schedules. It has been speculated that these stations operate as a simple and foolproof method for government agencies to communicate with spies "in the field", using the transmitted codes as a one-time pad cryptosystem.

The geek factor is off the charts, here. I first learned about these wonders of mystery in a great book called "Big Secrets" by Willian Poundstone. If things like this intrigue you, that book is totally worth reading.

As for the stations themselves, I'm pretty sure they're a distributed, stegano graphic cr ypto key based on the Voynich manusript by some spies hiding out in SubTropli s (with a sects in Aquapoli s and the Iron Mountain complex, of course) perfecting their anti-rocket laser cannons and spy satellites. They get around in their personal submarines, defending their bases with Metal Storm cannons from enemy spies attacking in Surface Orbiters.

Abandoned Railway Stations

Abandoned Railway Stations 03/20/2003 08:30 AM
Servi ceton is a small railway town on the border of South Australia and Victoria, and was once a means for traders to escape taxes when travelling between the colonies, due to errors made when surveying the state borders. No train has stopped here since 1986, and now only a handful of people remain in the town, a sad downfall that Tom Waits has immortalized in song. But abandoned railway stations, closed as populations decline or trade routes change, exist the world over, in the city and in the country, and yes, even in France. They look like great places to explore.
