FCC proposes to make stations keep
copies of broadcast
07/12/2004 08:58 PM

Hey let's face it any of you that have cable television realize that at any point during the day you can easily stumble upon something that is not appropriate for the kids to watch. Apparently the FCC is proposing that broadcast and radio content be recorded and kept on file for 90 days. Is this really going to solve anything. I can see some radio host not wanting this being done. [Designtechnica< /a>]

Hmm... Isn't this nothing more than Microsoft copying David Gelertner? Sigh. Engineers are working on software to load every photo you take, every letter you write - in fact your every memory and experience - into a surrogate brain that never forgets anything, New Scientist can reveal It is part of a curious venture dubbed the MyLifeBits project, in which engineers at Microsoft's Media Presence lab in San Francisco are aiming to build multimedia databases that chronicle people's life events and make them searchable. "Imagine being able to run a Google-like search on your life," says Gordon Bell, one of the developers. [ Go ] David Gelertner is a Yale computer scientist with a commercial company who makes software for this. He calls it life streams or time streams (and I forget the url; sorry).

Free copies from Canon copiers

Free copies from Canon copiers 05/29/2004 08:05 AM
On Kuro5hin, a good how-to for hacking Canon copiers at copy-shops to give you free copies -- and to get them to do fun stuff.
The copy machines you are using are configured in a certain way to use a coin operated slot, key card, or service key (such as those that Kinkos has). Through an interesting "feature" in the firmware, if the copy machine is configured to accept coins or keys, and no machine is hooked up for this, it will give copies for free. Unfortunately, this isn't as helpful as it sounds; anyone with a remedial amount of intelligence who wants to get free copies will try unplugging the instrument first and foremost. As such, it is often impossible without a service key to unplug the apparatus.

Fortunately, there is a work-around. Go into "Service Mode" (using star-2 and 8-star), and push the "Option" tab. Underneath it, push "Acc". A new menu will pop up. Hit the "Coin" button, and enter "0" on the keypad. Once you are done, hit "Enter" or "Apply" (you MUST do this after you change any field; otherwise it will reset the next button you push). Once you are done, hit reset until you are on the main screen. Voila - free copies!

Stations Of The Cross

Stations Of The Cross 06/22/2005 02:58 AM
Stations Of The Cross, a piece on "faith-based" news outlets from the May/June Columbia Journalism Review: "In recent months, evangelical broadcasters have dedicated program after program to bemoaning 'judicial tyranny,' and urging audiences to agitate for the 'nuclear option' — changing Senate rules so Democrats can no longer filibuster and thereby block nominees they oppose....All the while, the dizzying blend of God, news, and politics that he [Pat Robertson] has crafted and honed was bouncing off satellites, winding through thousands of cable systems, rippling over the airwaves, and glowing on television screens across America." Numbers Stations

Numbers Stations 06/22/2004 04:01 PM

Numbers station : A post over at Boing Boing reminded me of the phenomenon of numbers stations.

Numbers stations are shortwave radio stations of uncertain origin that broadcast streams of numbers, words, or phonetic sounds. No one knows for sure where their signals originate or what purpose they serve. The voices that can be heard on these stations are often those of children, or are mechanically generated.

Numbers stations appear and disappear continuously, although some stick to regular schedules. It has been speculated that these stations operate as a simple and foolproof method for government agencies to communicate with spies "in the field", using the transmitted codes as a one-time pad cryptosystem.

The geek factor is off the charts, here. I first learned about these wonders of mystery in a great book called "Big Secrets" by Willian Poundstone. If things like this intrigue you, that book is totally worth reading.

As for the stations themselves, I'm pretty sure they're a distributed, stegano graphic cr ypto key based on the Voynich manusript by some spies hiding out in SubTropli s (with a sects in Aquapoli s and the Iron Mountain complex, of course) perfecting their anti-rocket laser cannons and spy satellites. They get around in their personal submarines, defending their bases with Metal Storm cannons from enemy spies attacking in Surface Orbiters.

HOW TO: Obtain Free Copies and Do Other
Fun Stuff to Copiers
05/29/2004 12:17 AM
This article will give insight into the inner workings of Canon copiers, and show you how to exploit a curious oversight that allows for free copies. The material in this article is restricted to Canon copiers only, as I have had the most experience in them; however, this is not as narrow as you might imagine. Generally, Canon copiers are seen second in quality only to Xerox in the market; thus, many big-time copy shops and corporations use Canon copiers. This article will not analyze the philosophical questions of doing anything it demonstrates. Obviously, everything outlined is of dubious morality; if you are not that type of person, see this as an educational article demonstrating how the inner-workings of a copier works. I take absolutely no responsibility for anything anyone does with this information. (Remember: information wants to be free [as in beer])

Abandoned Railway Stations

Abandoned Railway Stations 03/20/2003 08:30 AM
Servi ceton is a small railway town on the border of South Australia and Victoria, and was once a means for traders to escape taxes when travelling between the colonies, due to errors made when surveying the state borders. No train has stopped here since 1986, and now only a handful of people remain in the town, a sad downfall that Tom Waits has immortalized in song. But abandoned railway stations, closed as populations decline or trade routes change, exist the world over, in the city and in the country, and yes, even in France. They look like great places to explore.

nokia_5140.gif imageNokia has begun shipping the new 5140 camera phone, aimed at "outdoor and sports-minded consumers." Even better, the rugged phone is Nokia's first push-to-talk phone, so hopefully we'll see it picked up by Sprint or Nextel as an option. As for the fitness part, Nokia has included some software to like stopwatches, a 'Fitness Coach' personal training program, and rugged Xpress-on shells -- one of which even adds GPS capabilities. Sounds interesting, but I think we'll wait to pass judgement until we can play around with one. Also, did someone punch Nokia's designer in the eye the day they came up with the 5140? Maybe they were embarrassed to say they got in a fight or something, so they just went into work anyway and sort of blindly fucked around in AutoCad or whatever until their boss told them they could go home.
