Agere Systems Drives Support for New 500 Mbit/s Wi-Fi Proposal. Eight antennas? How much is that going to cost? (The mention of 'offering a competitive selection of network operators in a given hotspot" is particularly funny given that even the monopoly hotspots aren't making any money.)

Web-Based Information Retrieval Support Systems (WIRSS): Building Research Tools for Scientists in the New Information Age
http://www 2.cs.uregina.ca/~jtyao/Papers/Web_WI03.pdf

Abstract:

The concept of Web-based Information Retrieval Support Systems (WIRSS) is introduced. The needs for WIRSS are shown by a detailed case study of existing research article indexing and citation analysis systems, such as Curent Content, DBLP, Science Citation Index and CiteSeer. The objective of WIRSS is to build new and effective research tools for scientists to access, explore and use information on the Web, which may lead to improved research productivity and quality.

Agere Hometown is Wi-Fi Void

Agere Hometown is Wi-Fi Void 01/19/2004 01:59 PM
The Lehigh Valley, home to Agere, has just ten public hotspots: This writer supposes that people who live there are more satisfied with cheap dial-up connections than younger or more affluent people in other towns. Lehigh residents have a lower average household income and a lower educational average than the rest of the country. She looked for Wi-Fi users at Borders and another book shop in town, Moravian, but rarely found anyone using the networks. New technology does often take longer to filter into small towns....

Agere Wants 500 Mbps out of IEEE 802.11n 07/12/2004 02:24 PM
As the IEEE considers 802.11n proposals this week, Agere says 500 Mbps should be speed goal: Agere is combining MIMO (multiple in, multiple out antennas) with single and double-wide channel allotments of 20 and 40 MHz. With 40 MHz of spectrum and eight antennas (four transmit, four receive), they expect to reach 500 Mbps of raw throughput. In 5 GHz, Agere says, they could have 11 double-wide channels, while two are possible side-by-side in 2.4 GHz. Agere's proposal appears entirely backwards compatible with the single-wide, 802.11b/g channel and 2.4 GHz compatibility as a baseline....

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM

ifd-iv.jpg imageFor embedded computing hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection; that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around $2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives instead.
Read - Flash memory ATA hard drive [TechJapan]

Update: Reader Tom Lee brings up a much cheaper option for hackers on a budget (after the jump.)

Silicon Valley 100

Silicon Valley 100 02/01/2005 09:19 PM

Silicon Valley 100 is a project by Auren Hoffman. I was lucky enough to make it on the list. The idea is to make a list of "connectors" and send them new gadgets and products to test. Newsweek just did a story about this. I think it is almost like an opt-in focus group. The obvious criticism would be these companies are trying to buy "buzz". The difference between this and some buzz creation companies is 1) it's not stealth 2) they don't tell you what to say. I checked with Auren and he says that we can write whatever we want about the products. When I get a product from Silicon Valley 100, I will state this clearly in any blog post that refers to it and will say what I think. I realize that the fact that we probably get to keep most of the products makes it a bit like bribery, but if it's crap, I'm sure most people will throw it away. I would be most interested in products that are still not on the market where our feedback could be incorporated in the product design. Then our feedback could be more constructive...

Anyway, I'd be curious on people's thoughts.

The first product is a brondell high-tech toilet seat. I told Auren, that this is one product that Japan is a world leader in. I blogged this before, but we have over 50% household penetration. The one in my house and in my office even has anti-stinky gas-gate like air filtration.

UPDATE: Just uploaded a 5 min 4.3 MB conversation with Auren Hoffman, the founder of the Silicon Valley 100.

UPDATE 2: Uploaded it to archive.org too. Maybe I should put my media files there instead since archive org does the file conversions for me too...

The Uncanny Valley

The Uncanny Valley 08/19/2004 03:21 PM

Dr. Mori's Uncanny Valley: Fascinating theory on robotics here. Make them lifelike, but not too lifelike.

...the more human-looking a machine becomes, the more people are drawn to it. For example, a robot that has arms and legs and can talk but clearly looks like a machine is typically embraced as a scientific wonder. But at the point when a robot looks and acts almost human but not quite, people are repulsed and the approval rating plummets.

The sudden dip is called the Uncanny Valley because something that comes across as an off-kilter version of humanity is, well, uncanny. It's profoundly disturbing when something blurs the line between human and non-human.

More on this subject here and here.,

Where is Robot-Valley? 07/09/2004 05:04 PM
A new robotic trends article uses an assortment of statistics to predict where we'll see the robot equivalent of silicon valley. After describing lots of maps of population-adjusted densities of unspecified local robot clubs, contests, and start-up companies, the author concludes that robot valley will be on the east coast, unless it's on the west coast, or somewhere else, or unless the Japanese take over the whole market first.
