Online Battle of Low-Cost Books. 07/12/2004 08:49 PM

NY Times: Online Battle of Low-Cost Books. "Used books are to consumer books as Napster was to the music industry. The question becomes, 'How does the book industry address its used-book problem?' There aren't any easy answers, especially as no one is breaking any laws here." Translation: First-sale rights are fine as long as it's hard to exercise them. Paging Cory Doctorow.

More Writers Offering Books For Free

More Writers Offering Books For Free
Online
04/29/2004 02:42 PM
It appears that it's not only musicians recognizing the power of free publicity from putting their content for free online. While this article ignores the success of more recent authors to release books online (Cory Doctorow, Lawrence Lessig, etc...) in conjunction with their hardcopy release (as well as a number of authors now experimenting with releasing chapters of their books in progress), it appears that a more mainstream novelist, Matthew Reilly, is now releasing his latest novel online for free. He's releasing it in sections, rather than as a single download, but his theory is that it will help get him a bigger audience from readers who previously didn't know about him, or who were unlikely to find his books in bookstores. He hopes that it will encourage people to go out and buy his other books (this is his sixth book, and some of his earlier novels were apparently "best sellers"). Also, his publishing company will publish a hardcopy of this book later this year, after it's already completely free online. Apparently, the idea was entirely his, but his publishing company thinks it's a great idea - though, it may have helped that Reilly sold them the publishing rights for a $1 to get rid of the risk. It doesn't seem like my usual reading material, but if you're interested in what he describes as a "Tom Clancy-Michael Crichton" hybrid, you can download the first two sections of his book at the Hover Car Racer website.

To complement the library, Questia offers a range of search, note-taking, and writing tools. These tools help students locate the most relevant information on their topics quickly, quote and cite correctly, and create properly formatted footnotes and bibliographies automatically. Questia provides a comprehensive research environment to meet students' academic needs. EEBO

Early English Books Online (EEBO) makes available online more than 125,000 titles published between 1473 and 1700, starting with the earliest printed works in the English language. It reproduces the works listed in the Short-Title Catalogue I (Pollard & Redgrave, 1475-1640); the Short-Title Catalogue II (Wing, 1641-1700); the Thomason Tracts, a compendium of broadsides on the English Civil War printed between 1640 and 1661; and the Early English Books Tract Supplements. The works can be searched by author, title, printer, publication date, type of illustration, LC subject headings and other fields. Bibliographic records are linked to high-resolution facsimile images of the works, downloadable in Adobe PDF format. The EEBO database comprises TIFF images and their accompanying bibliographic data.

TCP

The EEBO-TCP project is an international scholarly collaboration and partnership between the British Library, Oxford University, the University of Michigan, JISC, the Council on Library and Information Resources, and ProQuest Information and Learning. This exceptional partnership has proposed to create 25,000 searchable and readable editions that link immediately to the corresponding Earley English Books Online image files. In combination, the text and image editions of these works provide a powerful research and instructional tool of unquestioned enduring value.

These have been added to Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog and will be added to Academic Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide.

Flawed Online Searches Cost Businesses $31 Billion Last Year
http://www.emarke ter.com/Article.aspx?1002877

Amid the excitement with search advertising revenue growth and the upcoming Google IPO, a study finds US executives dissatisfied with the performance of online search engines.
According to a survey released by FIND/SVP, 84% of business executives feel that Web searches -- using the generally consumer-centric search engines now available --take longer than they should due to poor results. It is estimated that the loss of productive time using search engines to conduct online research cost businesses $31 billion last year. The study found that that not only are 71% of business executives frustrated with consumer search engines, 74% are not even confident that the results are reliable. However, despite this lack of confidence, 67% stated it would be difficult or impossible to do their jobs without Web-based search tools. Business professionals also question the reliability of search information, with 52% only "somewhat confident" that results originate from credible sources.

Interesting article and it just happens that FIND/SVP announces their "new" business search engine this week!! Hmmmm......

BusinessWeek Online - If anyone thought tech executives might finally give up their long fight against counting employee stock options as an expense, a rally on June 24 quashed that notion. More than 700 employees bused to Palo Alto, Calif., by Cisco Systems (NasdaqNM:CSCO - News), Intel (NasdaqNM:INTC - News), Sun Microsystems (NasdaqNM:SUNW - News), and other Silicon Valley companies staged a protest near a hearing by the Financial Accounting Standards Board, which wants options expensed by yearend. ...
