OnTime Power-Over-Ethernet Clock

OnTime Power-Over-Ethernet Clock 04/05/2005 11:30 AM

ontime_ethernet.jpgI sort of understand why this simple 'OnTime' digital clock is $200. It operates on only power-over-Ethernet and syncs up with any SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) server it can find on the network. And it's designed to be seen from over 150 feet away, so we're talking about something that would live in a data center, not your house.

But why hasn't someone made one for our houses? Regular Ethernet has some power over it—surely it's enough to drive a simple clock and some SNTP firmware. I send this idea blindly to the internet, like a A.O. Spare sigil, and await its return. I will still expect the usual 15 percent conceptual licensing fee.

Apple's newest AirPort Extreme Base Station can operate usi ng Power over Ethernet (PoE), making it possible for IT personnel in corporations, schools and other institutional settings to install the device in locations that lack easy access to an AC outlet, such as crawlspaces or areas above suspended ceilings. That presumes they're using an Ethernet switch or hub that can deliver PoE, however, which many businesses don't have. Now MacWireless offers its own PoE solution comprising a pair of adapters that convert a standard Ethernet cable into one that carries power as well. The US$69.98 interface works over up to 330 feet of Ethernet cable.

Adding Bluetooth to MP3 players

Adding Bluetooth to MP3 players 10/31/2003 11:40 AM
A company called Infinite Range is working on a special Bluetooth add-on for MP3 players called RangeScan that'll let you wirelessly transmit audio to a stereo. The only problem is that right now all it does is take the analog audio signal from the players headphones jack, convert into a digital stream, and then decode them back into an analog signal at the receiver, which makes something like this only slightly more useful than an FM transmitter add-on like the iTrip. There are definitely some practical uses for having wireless networking built-into an MP3 player -- like swapping files with friends or wirelessly synching with a computer -- but Bluetooth is too slow to be off much use for those purposes. What we want Apple to do is to put AirPort Extreme into the next iPod. Read...
