PR, Blogs and the Evolving Media World 07/12/2004 03:50 PM

An online event called Global PR Blog Week is under way. They've posted an interview today with Jay Rosen, who (blush) has kind words for my book. I'm busy answering questions for an interview they'll post later in the week.

Media, Blogs, Truth and Consequences

Media, Blogs, Truth and Consequences 09/15/2004 03:14 PM

(This is also my colu mn today in the San Jose Mercury News.) I still don't know whether Dan Rather and his colleagues at CBS News' ``60 Minutes'' show got snookered by a memorandum-faking con artist when they reported on documents that raised new questions about President Bush's National Guard duty. As a journalist I hope they didn't, though I suspect they did. And while doubts about the memo's authenticity were first raised on the Internet, some of the self-congratulatory online chest-thumping is overdone. Why? The traditional media would not have ignored the issue. Certainly by now, big newspapers and broadcasters would have been asking deservedly tough questions of a dismayingly recalcitrant CBS. Yet I'm also convinced that the emergent online community known as the ``blogosphere'' -- the world of Weblogs, or blogs -- has played an essential role in this bizarre sequence of events. The major shift, however, is one of perception, less in what happened than its high visibility and velocity. More...

Blogs: Halting the March of Mainstream Media
http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/features/story.jsp?stor y=561871

A revolution is sweeping the American media that will eventually spread to this part of the world. What is happening is that for the first time in decades, if not ever, the power of the mainstream media (MSM) in the United States is being seriously challenged by a mostly ragtag army of outsiders armed with little more than the Internet. The age of the blogger is upon us. A blogger is someone who keeps a
web-log, updated on an almost daily basis. They offer blow-by-blow commentary on current events. They can do so at almost no cost and their sites can be accessed by anyone with an Internet connection anywhere in the world. Basically the Internet has eliminated the cost of entry into the world of media and commentary at a stroke. Last week we had a clear demonstration of blogger power.

Blogs are beginning to be felt all over the world and the Internet is starting to become interactive ... what Sir. Tim Berners-Lee always wanted ......
we are living in truly exciting times!!!!

Where does it say - that all digital media sites have to have that light grey, acqua kind of sparsness to them?

Why is it that all digital media sites - strip away any sembleance of interface - for that anti-designy kind of look - so popularized by blogging?

I dream of the day when we can shed our dial-up mentality in favor of photos, video and music.

O'Reilly's Digital media site looks coolio.

Hopefully they'll support all sorts of new kinds of micro-content standards.

One of the sad, geeky things I do for fun is to follow my referrer log, i.e. checking out the sites that people come to this weblog from. Sometimes, your site gets listed in the oddest of places, and with luck, you may find other interesting links from those sites. You can think of it as some sort of a website Friendster: different web sites get listed together if they have something in common. Though often, the common factor tends to be something you don't expect.

For example, I saw a bunch of people coming to Things You Can Do With Your Laundry But Probably Should Not from an Italian dis cussion board, which in turn leads me to... Happy Tree Friends, a wacky and violent cartoon with episodes that last only a couple of minutes. You know, the kinda stuff that would be perfect to forward to your friends if your mobile phone could play them.

I can't stop marveling the amount of talent and creativity that people keep pouring onto the Internet.

The ever evolving conversation

The ever evolving conversation 03/26/2005 04:33 PM

For about three years now - I'm been hemming and hawing and giving people a hard time and (apparently) acting belligerent - about Open Identities.

About the notion of open DNS-like indices of people. And what we could do with them. You see I spent much of teh 90's desinging systems that relied uypon a theoretical notion - that noadasys is called social software and social networking. And at the core of that - is digital identity.

So as the world has caught up with my ideas, it's becoming more and more important that we DO IT RIGHT!

Now Tribe is calling that the PeopleWeb, Microsoft has a [can't talk about it but will soon] platform and Dick Hardt and his Sxip Networks is rolling out.

Along the way the Identity Commons has launched their i-Names effort and PingID continues to lead in the open source Liberty Alliance (and other enterprise protocols) space.

So Doc cautions us and says "we're barely srarted."

No shit - Sherlock.

But like I said - it's all happening. I just wish Dave Winer were part of the conversation - too.

The Internet at 35: Still Evolving
http://snipurl.com/8qfg

Thirty-five years after computer scientists at UCLA linked two bulky computers using a 15-foot gray cable, testing a new way to exchange data over networks, what would ultimately become the Internet remains a work in progress. University researchers are experimenting with ways to increase its capacity and speed. Programmers are trying to imbue Web pages with intelligence. And work is underway to re-engineer the network to reduce spam and security troubles. All the while threats loom: Critics warn that commercial, legal and political pressures could hinder the types of innovations that made the Internet what it is today. Stephen Crocker and Vinton Cerf were among the graduate students who joined UCLA professor Len Kleinrock in an engineering lab on September 2, 1969, as bits of meaningless test data flowed silently between the two computers. By January, three other "nodes" joined the fledgling network.
