“Longhorn”
06/24/2005 07:24 PMMicrosoft Corp. today announced support for RSS (Really Simple
Syndication) in the next version of the Microsoft® Windows®
operating system, code-named “Longhorn.” The RSS functionality in
“Longhorn” is being designed to make it simple for end users to
discover, view and subscribe to RSS feeds, as well as make it easier
for developers to incorporate the rich capabilities of RSS into their
applications. In addition, Microsoft announced Simple List Extensions,
a set of extensions to RSS that can be used to enable Web sites to
publish lists such as of photo albums, music playlists and top 10
lists as RSS feeds. Microsoft is making the specification freely
available via the Creative Commons license, the same license under
which the RSS 2.0 specification was released. The announcement was
made in Seattle during Gnomedex 5.0, an annual conference for
technology enthusiasts and industry influentials that focuses on RSS,
blogging, podcasting and other new media models.

Internet connections. As Gilmore knows from the flow of support calls,
there’s little point in trying to find a permanent solution to
the problem.

Releases Free Client for Win XP, 2000
“LucidLink
has released a free Wi-Fi client that solves some configuration,
security hassles: In an interesting move, wireless security
software vendor Interlink has released LucidLink Wireless Client at no
cost for all Windows XP and 2000 users. The client software aids in
supporting secure configurations by detecting a network's
settings--Mac OS X does this built-in--and secures against evil twin
and related attacks by not automatically switching to networks named
the same but with different attributes. The client incorporates
several security elements, meaning it can serve as a single entry
point for Wi-Fi network connection, as opposed to Microsoft's
broken-up approach.” [Wi-Fi Networking

Shafting the Non-Windows Users Again
09/08/2004 11:06 AMNat spends a few minutes beating the same drum that I've beat
repeatedly: Today I found out about Picasa, which Google acquired.
It's an image archive/management package. And I found out about
Farechase, which Yahoo acquired. It's like shopper.com for airfares,
or something. I don't really know what they do, because I can't use
them--they both require Windows. I know there are smart people at
Google and Yahoo, but they obviously had no say in this. How will you

Windows XP users try their best to
simulate Mac OS X
05/02/2004 10:32 PMWindows XP users have serious cases of Mac OS X lust. Trying to
simulate Mac OS X on Windows XP is turning into quite the hobby
lately. While Microsoft is taking its own sweet time (years) to come
up with a version of Windows (Longhorn) that tries to look and work
like Apple's Mac OS X, Windows XP users are taking matters into their
own hands while they wait and wait, then wait some more.
"Look closely, and you'll see that its creator has done a very good
job; although the machine is running Windows XP, the interface is
almost indistinguishable from an OS X machine," Leander Kahney writes
for Wired News. In the screenshots included in the Wired article,
"notice the dock, desktop background, menus, system font and icons for
applications and folders. Even the keyboard shortcuts belong to the
Mac OS X."
Kahney writes, "The system belongs to Kurt871, who won the latest
monthly screenshot contest at AquaXP, a site devoted to turning XP
boxes into faux Macs. AquaXP has 9,000 members. The site is named
after Apple Computer's distinctive Aqua Mac OS X interface. A similar
site, Aqua-Soft.org, has 16,000 members. And there are a dozen or more
sites like them, according to the links collected at Iceman's
Emulation Page."
