Windows
03/29/2005 08:50 PM
Microsoft Corp. will build software for managing identities into Windows in order to beef up security by giving users more control over their personal information, the world's largest software maker said on Tuesday. The ID technology called "info-cards" will give users more control over their own personal information in order to shop and access services online, said Michael Stephenson, director in Microsoft's Windows Server division.

Microsoft is currently working on a new Internet Explorer Web browser and version of Windows, code-named Longhorn, but Stephenson declined to say whether "info-cards" would be built into the current Windows XP version or Longhorn. "We're trying to make the end-user experience as simple as possible," Stephenson said, adding that Microsoft's "goal is to make sure that this is as broadly accessible as possible." The initiative is the latest effort by the software giant to improve the reliability and security of its software.

One way to understand the challenge Microsoft Corp. faces as it takes on Internet search king Google is to think of it in terms of soda pop. The big cola companies are famous for conducting blind taste tests, in which participants sample Coke and Pepsi and declare a preference without knowing which soda is in which cup. In the prototypical example, people opt for the drink that's not their normal favorite, showing just how much a brand can influence perception and choice -- and, not incidentally, providing good material for a TV commercial.

Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Initiative received plenty of potshots last week in the wake of a 200-day delay releasing a patch for the critical ASN.1 vulnerability that affects all supported Windows OSes. Prior to this latest transgression, though, people were buzzing about the enhanced security features in service pack 2 (SP2) that move Windows XP closer to "secure by default." SP2 is due to be released this summer.

Microsoft Working On Greylisting
Anti-Spam Solution
12/26/2003 02:55 PM
While others are saying that the only way to stop spam is to make people pay for email, others are coming up with slightly more creative solutions. Realizing that having people actually pay money to send emails brings up a lot of other problems, it appears that Microsoft is picking up on the idea of greylisting by creating their own style of spam delay technology called "Penny Black". The idea is that if you're sending email from an unrecognized location, the server will slow your machine down temporarily, making it much more expensive for the spammer - who needs to get more machines and more bandwidth to keep sending out the same number of emails. Of course, these days, with spammers hijacking others' machines, they might not care so much.

Guy Who Stole AltaVista Source Code
Working On Search At Microsoft
07/09/2004 03:28 PM
A man who was arrested last week for stealing AltaVista's source code is apparently now working on Microsoft's well publicized search technology efforts. AltaVista, of course, was the original great search engine, before it got confused and decided to "go portal" like everyone else. Apparently, this guy worked at AltaVista, but some time after he left decided he wanted to see how the product had "evolved" and discovered he could still log in to his old AltaVista account. He then downloaded the source code to his home computer. This all happened before he went to work for Microsoft, so the conspiracy theories about Microsoft stealing the code don't apply, but it does raise some questions about Microsoft's search technology.
