Contribute / ProFTPd problem solved
Contribute / ProFTPd problem solved
11/19/2003 06:55 PMAfter further analysis of the Contribute problem described earlier, we
discovered that Contribute was opening a new FTP connection every time we clicked a
link within the application even before we had hit the "edit page"
button to fire up the editing mode. Switching the connection over to
use SFTP instead of FTP had the same problem,
with a secure connection being opened for each link we clicked
instead. The connections remained open until we shut down
Contribute.
My hunch is that this could be an obscure bug that only surfaces
when Contribute is used with ProFTPd 1.2.9. At any rate, we've solved
the problem by setting the MaxClientsPerUser directive in the ProFTPd
configuration file. Contribute doesn't seem to mind in the
slightest.

ProFTPD 1.3.0RC1 (Development branch)

ProFTPD is a proven, high-performance, scalable FTP server written
from scratch, with a focus toward simplicity, security, and ease of
configuration. Naturally, ProFTPD powers some of the largest sites on
the Internet. It features a very Apache-like configuration syntax,
modules, and a highly customizable server infrastructure, including
support for multiple 'virtual' FTP servers, anonymous FTP, and
permission-based directory visibility.
Changes:
Many bugfixes, a new LDAP module, some new directives and functions
(e.g. display of transfered files and bytes and the inclusion of
mod_delay), and a new "ftptop" command for displaying current
connections.

Should Companies Be Sued For Allowing

Should Companies Be Sued For Allowing
Pornographic Spam?
12/03/2003 11:06 AMHere come the lawyers. This topic has been discussed before, but as
the spam problem gets worse, more lawyers are sensing a chance to make
a little extra money, so it's coming up again. Lawyers are now
looking to
sue companies
that allow pornographic spam to reach employee in-boxes saying
that it creates an unsafe working environment. Of course, companies
already
know what a pain spam is to their employees, and they
would love to stop it. The problem is that spam is very difficult to
stop effectively, and many spam-stopping solutions create additional
problems as well (whether its additional maintenance costs or lost
legitimate emails). Blaming the spam on the companies that don't use
filters seems a bit misplaced. The people who should be blamed are
the spammers themselves. Besides, in most cases, the spam is due to
someone letting their email address become public. If these lawsuits
are valid, then it actually will encourage people to be fast and loose
with their email address to get as much porn spam as possible - just
to sue their employers.

08/18/2004 06:43 AMUSATODAY.com - MoveOn PAC, which says it supports "moderate to

Bush's re-election, starts airing another ad today. Called "Swift

two weeks ago by an organization called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
That earlier ad accused Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic presidential
nominee and a decorated Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, of lying

venge of the User: Lessons from Creator/User Battles at the
O'Reilly Emerging
Technology Conference in San Diego.
The response is an attempt to "configure the users" -- constrain
behavior to acceptable behavior with messaaging, kicking people
off, etc.
This won't work: you can't tell a hacker not to hack. These kids
are social hackers. You can stop some bad behavior, but you chase
off your best users, too.
Dating doesn't happen because you're in a dating context. Dating
arises out of real contexts.
Taking away fakesters didn't make Frienster more real. Friendster
is unreal because people never remove their friends, even if they
never see them (the exception is when you break up, ironic,
because ex-lovers are strong ties!).
