Earthlink Integrates Boingo Software

Earthlink Integrates Boingo Software

Earthlink Integrates Boingo Software 07/12/2004 02:24 PM

EarthLink will build Boingo's Wi-Fi software into its TotalAccess package: TotalAccess has been EarthLink's key to user happiness from its introduction about a decade ago. Originally, it handled the nasty bits of finding the latest phone numbers and then dialing and connecting. Now, it's broadened to include anti-spam, anti-popup, and anti-scam software--and Wi-Fi. EarthLink's founder and chairman, Sky Dayton, also founded and runs Boingo Wireless, and the two companies have had a partnership for some time. The integration of Boingo's Wi-Fi management software into TotalAccess makes it that much easier for EarthLink's five million subscribers to choose to use Wi-Fi. Boingo, by the way, used to note over 6,000 access points under contract with about 3,300 live; in this press release they say 9,000 under contract. We're on the verge of seeing a large bump in network sizes from aggregators to judge by this number and details provided recently by GoRemote and iPass....

SK-Earthlink Links South Korean Mobile
Operator, Earthlink Networks
02/01/2005 09:13 PM
Mobile operator SK Telecom and Earthlink Networks launch 3G/Wi-Fi combo firm: Sky Dayton is the CEO of SK-Earthlink, a new MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) that will sign up end users with the promise of integrated Wi-Fi and third-generation cellular data networks for voice and data through a single handset. Dayton founded Earthlink and Boingo Wireless. SK Telecom provides service to 18 million customers in South Korea, and their sister company in the SK Group, SK Teletech, makes advanced handsets for domestic use and internationally to China, Israel, Kazakhstan, and Taiwan. Dayton said in an interview today that SK Telecom offers a remarkable array of handsets including units with hard drives, five megapixel cameras, and satellite television broadcast receivers. "Not all those things are going to be applicable in a US market," Dayton said. The service will attempt to leverage the growing availability of 3G networks with the increased ubiquity of Wi-Fi hotspots. Dayton says that although handsets and service plans won't be available until as late as the end of 2005, that generally SK-Earthlink would focus on allowing its customers to make voice calls from home Wi-Fi networks, Wi-Fi hotspots, and 3G cellular networks. They would also leverage Wi-Fi alongside 3G in offering advanced data and entertainment services, although he did not mention specifics. "We think there's a big group of Internet savvy early adopter" consumers in the US who want this but can't get it, he said. SK-Earthlink may use Boingo's platform as the base on which they develop hotspot relationships--Dayton will have an arm's length involvement in that decision--but Boingo will certainly also continue to sell to other carriers regardless. Other reports note that SK-Earthlink will use CDMA technology, SK Telecom's flavor, which ties them closely in the U.S. to Verizon Wireless and Sprint PCS, the only two remaining CDMA carriers here. Verizon has already deployed a significant portion of their ambitious EVDO network offering speeds of hundreds of kilobits per second, and Sprint PCS is committed to higher-speed offerings than its current 1xRTT rate that compares to modem speeds. At the same time, Verizon Wireless said recently that 3G will trump Wi-Fi, a sentiment that baffles Dayton. "Wi-Fi is an unstoppable force," he said. "It's like trying to deny there's a big elephant in the room." Both technologies "are great individually, but if you put them together" they allow the best connection wherever a user...

Boingo and the Mac

Boingo and the Mac 06/18/2004 01:48 AM

I'm not at all sure that there's a business model in Wi-Fi connections other than offering them as part of something else, but if anyone is going to make this work it's probably going to be Sky Dayton and his team at Boingo. I haven't used Boingo, in part because it's been a Windows-only service, and I've bugged Sky every time I've seen him for a Mac version. It's coming -- a beta Boingo for the Mac has been sent to a few folks, which means the real thing is coming soon. Still not sure about the business model, but I'm glad to see the Mac support.

Boingo in 75 Airports

Boingo in 75 Airports 08/04/2004 11:42 AM
Boingo partners with ICOA, expands to 75 airports: The battle for road warriors hearts and minds starts and ends in the airport. Boingo now has a roaming deal for all six of Icoa's airports, and 69 others worldwide. The other day, I noted that SBC had signed up to resell access at or operate service in many of the U.S. airports that offer service. If they broker a few more deals, they could have the only comprehensive airport service plan. A colleague of mine, a technology writer who travels frequently, says he rarely sees people working on laptops in airports. I don't know how that's possible, with the gate areas full of laptop users before flights furtively plugged into power. He's fallen in love with a Treo, which allowed him to skip opening his laptop on a recent trip. I still wonder how many applications people actually need. Does Blackberry's success show that low-speed email is the primary application and that everything else is a distant second? I doubt it every time I see a plane full of cramped business people desperately typing away, reviewing Acrobat documents, building PowerPoint presentations, running Excel spreadsheets, and using proprietary software....

Fiberlink Uses Boingo SDK

Fiberlink Uses Boingo SDK 11/11/2003 03:10 PM
Fiberlink, the remote access aggretator, said it will use Boingo’s SDK (software developer's kit) to build a client: The client will provide Wi-Fi and in the future 3G sniffing, connection and authentication. The deal also means that Fiberlink customers can access the hotspots that are part of Boingo’s service. In another deal from an aggregator, Infonet, which caters to large multinationals, will use hot spots that are part of GRIC's network. GRIC is an aggregator that appeals to distributed enterprises. I'm seeing an increasing number of announcements about aggregators like Fiberlink, iPass, and GRIC including as many hot spots into their networks as they can and making it easier for their customers to find and use the networks. They are aggressively trying to lock their customers into relying on them for Wi-Fi access before tons of roaming agreements happen between Wi-Fi operators, making the aggregators irrelevant. It will be interesting to watch what happens to these guys as the market evolves....

MCI Expands with Boingo

MCI Expands with Boingo 12/16/2003 05:23 PM
MCI's Wi-Fi network includes 2,000 more locations via Boingo: The press release and this article from News.com don't clarify precisely what's going on here. I was unaware MCI even had a Wi-Fi option, and its 600 locations sound very much like Wayport, a fact the News.com article confirms (sort of: the current version says WavePort is the partner, but I assume this is Wayport). Boingo already includes the Wayport locations in its total, so if MCI adds Boingo, does that mean that its customers will have double access to Wayport? And I've never heard of MCI's client software, either. More clarification's probably necessary to understand this deal....

Boingo Wireless has finally, finally, finally released their Mac OS X client for hotspot access. By Glenn Fleishman, TidBITS

Boingo Adds Mac Client

Boingo Adds Mac Client 01/06/2005 05:34 PM
We Mac OS X users rejoice: Boingo has released their client for Mac OS X. I'm a Mac user--as well as a Linux and Windows XP user--and point out that the installed usage base of Wi-Fi on the Mac platform is ridiculously high among mobile travelers, thus making it a good way for Boingo to pick up customers. Boingo has the added advantage of having a Mac-friendly CEO, Sky Dayton, who founded EarthLink, bringing Internet access first to Mac users way way back in the mists of time more than a decade ago. The client comes with a special coupon offer for a month's free service when you sign up for the unlimited $21.95 per month package. The client is required to negotiate the complexities of authenticating to dozens of different hotspot networks in the absence of a clearinghouse, which allows cell networks to handle cross-network roaming and settlement....

Boingo CEO Critiques Cometa

Boingo CEO Critiques Cometa 05/18/2004 06:18 PM
Boingo Wireless CEO issues statement critiquing Cometa Networks' failures: In a rare case of this sort, Sky Dayton, Boingo's founder and CEO, issued a brief statement reiterating the overall growth in revenue and use of public Wi-Fi hotspots, and critiquing Cometa's missteps. The statement notes, "Cometa had the potential to become a leading wholesale hot spot provider. The company's business plan made a lot of sense -- build lots of hot spots on the cheap and wholesale them to brands who shoulder the costs of marketing, support and billing. But they didn't execute well. They spent too much money before they needed to and demanded carriers pay high minimums for access to a network that wasn't yet built. No carrier wanted to go along with that." Dayton also noted that despite Boingo's ability to sign up networks worldwide as part of their roaming and aggregation system, that Cometa wouldn't work with them. Cometa signed a roaming deal with iPass, but reports indicate that this was more theory than an implemented reality. Dayton wrote, "Boingo had attempted to strike a roaming agreement with Cometa, but they claimed to not be interested. Even though their network wasn't much more than a promise, they were acting as if they were already the market leader. They succeeded in alienating the very people they needed to help them succeed." We've heard now from other sources that Dayton's experience was consistent with Cometa's approach to other firms....

Boingo and Kyocera Team for Converged
Handset

Boingo and Kyocera Team for Converged
Handset
03/14/2005 05:46 PM
Boingo and Kyocera said they'll work together on a combined cellular and Wi-Fi handset: The device will enable seamless roaming between cellular networks and hotspots. The idea is to support both voice and data services that can continue operating while a user is moving from the range of a cellular network into a hotspot. The phones will integrate Boingo's roaming software for connectivity and authentication to hotspots. Such an integrated device will make it much easier for customers to use voice or other services over Wi-Fi if only because the Boingo application will help with hotspot login and authentication. The press release also is touting the benefit such a combined device will offer to users of higher bandwidth cellular applications, such as streaming video, because such services will operate better over the higher speed Wi-Fi networks. The key to this announcement, however, will be seeing cellular operators choose to sell the resulting device. Most of the combined cellular/Wi-Fi handsets that operators have said they'll be selling so far purposely don't support voice on the Wi-Fi component. Some operators have discussed combined cellular/Wi-Fi PDAs, which would allow users to download a voice over IP client and use it over Wi-Fi but the service wouldn't be integrated with the cellular network. Most cellular operators aren't promoting the use of voice over Wi-Fi, even though most also say that voice over Wi-Fi is no threat to their cellular businesses. Boingo also said that it, along with Kyocera, have joined BridgePort Networks' MobileIgnite Alliance. BridgePort describes the alliance as a group of companies "committed to standards-based, interoperability" of mobile voice over IP convergence solutions. In reality though, MobileIgnite pushes the use of BridgePort's solutions to support the integration of cellular and Wi-Fi networks. While the end result makes more sense than UMA because BridgePort's solution takes the most advantage of the efficiencies available by carrying voice over broadband IP networks, the last time I talked to BridgePort the solution required cellular operators to integrate BridgePort's products into their networks. While possible, I think that BridgePort may fight an uphill battle to convince many cellular operators to deploy a solution that offloads traffic from their networks onto hotspots that are potentially owned by another operator....

Linksys Offers Boingo as Turnkey Option

Linksys Offers Boingo as Turnkey Option 04/14/2004 02:21 PM
Linksys's WRV54G has firmware upgrade to allow owners to enable Boingo Hot Spot in a Box service: Boingo presents the latest twist in turnkey hotspots solutions: buy a WRV54G for about $180 to $200, check a box to activate the Boingo feature, and sign up with Boingo. The WRV54G is a regular Ethernet switch and Wi-Fi gateway with the ability to terminate up to 50 static end-to-end VPN sessions (which isn't the same as offering remote VPN server access for roaming clients). Boingo has made public all of their payment rates, too: $20 bounty for new Boingo customers; $4 share for a daily user; $1 share for a monthly user's session at your location. I received a version that tipped the hat last October because the firmware release contained the Boingo option already. Since I also purchased a WRV54G just after evaluating one, it's time to upgrade its firmware and try out being a hotspot in my Greenwood neighborhood in which there is practically no hotspot access....
