Qosmio notebook, Dell and Asustek are stepping up to the plate as

07/31/2004 03:53 AMDell and Asustek Computer plan to launch 17-inch AV (audio video)
notebooks to compete with Toshiba’s recently launched Qosmio notebook,
according to market sources. The new AV notebooks are intended to give
a jolt to sales in the second half of this year, with most vendors
claiming that demand was not as strong as expected in the first half.
Toshiba was the first to introduce an AV notebook, launching the
E15-AV101, its first Qosmio model (pronounced koss-me-oh) on July
22.
The E15-AV101 features TV and audio functionality, DVD recording and
personal computing, according to Toshiba. The Centrino-based notebook
also has a 15-inch diagonal TruBrite screen and will be available
starting in August. Dell launched its long-awaited 12.1-inch,
wide-screen Inspiron 700m, manufactured by Wistron, on July 27. The
Inspiron 700m had been postponed, due to delays of Intel’s Dothan CPU
launch. The Inspiron 700m, along with an upcoming 17-inch AV model,
are a crucial part of Dell’s plan to capture back-to-school sales, the
sources noted.

Did The Wizard
of Oz inspire Lord of the Rings? "The first film
version of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz was released in the
summer of 1939, less than a month before World War II officially
began. Though started as early as 1937, The Lord of the Rings was
largely composed during the war years, but not published until
somewhat later. Therefore, it is by no means impossible that J.R.R.
Tolkien saw the magnificent MGM movie before he wrote most of his
magnum opus. Could Oz have influenced his tale somehow, consciously or
unconsciously?"

offer a specially engineered “reverse current protection” feature in
its Fuji Novel D-Size and C-Size alkaline batteries. This feature
actually blocks the completion of negative-to-negative current in

08/01/2004 03:30 AMAccording to a recent study by Current Analysis, unit sales of
notebooks equipped with a widescreen 15.4-inch display have steadily
continued to climb throughout the first half of 2004. As of June 30,
the widescreen market accounted for 48% of all notebooks sold,
compared to only 15% in December 2003. The growth represents the
highest share yet for the widescreen models since its introduction in
the spring of 2003 and demonstrates widescreen systems are selling in
greater numbers than its traditional square counterparts. [PRWEB Aug

Batteries Can't Keep Up
(washingtonpost.com)
01/10/2004 07:21 AMwashingtonpost.com - Lithium ion batteries, the battery type most
commonly used inside laptops and the flashy gadgets that early
adopters of new technology lug everywhere in their pockets, are the
most lightweight, powerful and low-maintenance batteries around.
They're even more environmentally friendly than other choices.
A look at iPod batteries
A look at iPod batteries
03/19/2005 03:27 AMSince it’s debut in 2001, iPod users have had to contend with the
thorny issue of battery replacement.
Apple iPods are not unique in the world of rechargeable devices,
writes Lance Ulanoff of PC Mag.com. All of the MP3 players on the
market use rechargeable batteries, however some are designed for easy
battery replacement by the owner. In his comprehensive article,
Ulanoff outlines Apple’s battery replacement policy and gives the
background in what has been a contentious issue for many iPod owners.
“Maybe Apple made a mistake by not making them so consumers could
replace their own batteries, but perhaps that's the price you pay for
that much-lauded Apple industrial design,” Ulanoff concludes. “So
please, enough with the wild conspiracy theories and the threats of
class-action lawsuits. The iPod's a good player. Apple's not trying to
pull a fast one, and some of you need to learn a little more about
rechargeable battery care.”
Building Better Batteries
Building Better Batteries

David Pescovitz:
My latest article for TheFeature is about new battery designs for
mobile devices, from an onboard nuclear trickle charger that harnesses
radioactive energy to a microbattery made with the same techniques
used to fabricate computer chips.
"In late 18th century, Italian physicist Luigi Galvani
shocked the public by demonstrating that an amputated frog's leg
twitched when touched with certain metals. Galvani was convinced that
energy stored in the frog's leg caused the jerk. He called the
accumulated juice "animal electricity." Galvani's friend Alessandro
Volta called it nonsense. To prove that the energy came from the
metal, not the flesh, Volta eventually made a sandwich of silver,
moist cardboard, and zinc. His device also spurred frogs' legs to
spasm. In the end, Volta won the intellectual battle and also invented
the battery. Two hundred years later, the technology hasn't changed
much."
