Audio engineers at UC Davis have developed a new technology that delivers motion-tracked binaural sound (MTB). It's an update on conventional binaural recording which uses microphones embedded in a dummy head to capture the "location" of sound in a room. One problem with conventional binaural recording is that the sound doesn't change when you move your head. For example, if you hear a recording of someone behind you and turn your head to face them, it still sounds like they're behind you.

"The new method records through multiple microphones (eight for voice, 16 for music) spaced around a head-sized ball or cylinder. The sound is played back through headphones with a small tracking device attached to the top to follow head movements. As you turn your head while listening, the system mixes sound from different microphones, reproducing what you would hear if you were in the room."

Wired News profiles a new sound technology called 'Iosono' which aims to recreate the sweet spot of 3D sound in every seat of a theater. Created by one of the major developers of MP3, Iosono uses over 300 speakers arranged around a space to provide more realistic environment, one where sound can subtly move across the room for everyone listening, not just those in the middle of all the speakers. Unfortunately, as cool as the technology might be, movies theaters are already scrambling to scrape together enough money to pay for digital projection and other upgrades, and since no movie studios are currently producing movies with the Iosono format, it's unlikely owners will be rushing to install a 300-speaker upgrade for a format with an unknown future.

Developed by Hong Kong's "Beans Electronics," the speakers use a fancy joint to connect the speaker to its base, allowing for 180 degrees of rotation. Klipsch will soon be shipping their new 2.1 channel iPod speaker system, called the iFi) for a bit more than the cost of two of their comparable ProMedia 2.1 systems. The allure, of course, is its simple silver sheen and the included iPod dock. The dock makes it compatible with the iPod, mini and iPod photo and will charge your player in its spare time. Also included is a wireless remote control. The speakers are magnetically shielded and the subwoofer provides up to 200 watts of peak system power. It's $400 (plus about $60 for shipping) and available for preorder, shipping very soon, so they say.

Although suggested to me as an iPod solution, there's absolutely nothing keeping you from using the Eclipse TD Lulét speaker systems for anything from home theater to gaming -- in fact, they're designed to be easily mountable anywhere, like most other small speakers. If you do want to use the Lulét system with an iPod or other portable player, though, the accompanying amplifier will make sure you've got enough wattage to push either the 2.1 (or the 5.1 system, although using that with a portable player might be a waste of 3 perfectly good channels). The 307 Lulét line isn't their only setup, either, if you're looking for something with a little more punch than mini-system gear. (Thanks, Tim!)

Go old school with your iPod and blast these super-slick portable speakers around the playground. Speaker specs are pretty nice: 1-inch tweeters, two 3-inch mid-range drivers, a 4-inch subwoofer and a 4-inch passive radiator (?) and it runs on eight D batteries, just like the old timey boomboxes of yore.

Altec Lansing has been putting out some nice product lately, so there's no reason to think this will be a clunker. Priced at about $249, seems like a nice way to get portable sound out of your iPod.

One of the nicest ways to find out about good new music is to hear it while you’re shopping in the record store. I picked up this one that afternoon in San Fran because they were playing it real loud in the Virgin store and I knew I had to have it. This recording by Afro Celt is called POD (Real World 7243 597526 0 0) and it’s a collection of remixes. Occasionally they stumble into world-music clichés, and a couple of the tracks are just sonic wallpaper; but very pretty wallpaper. The flavor is more Afro than Celt and occasionally the pipes or penny whistle or whatever don’t quite make it with the djembes, but usually they do, and the sound is generally glorious. Plus it came with a DVD of the band performing, and they seem like some damn hot stuff, I’ll go see ’em if I get a chance.

For today's Wired News, I filed this story about a new "3-D" sound technology that promises to make every spot within a movie theater, theme park attraction, gaming room, or home theater a "sweet spot." The demo last Thursday in Studio City appeared to wow a number of the studio suits in attendance, but whether or not consumers and entertainment companies are prepared to pay for implementing the technology is another matter.

On a darkened sound stage, executives from Disney, Microsoft, Paramount and an array of Hollywood entertainment companies listen to the whispering voices of ghosts.

This Studio City lot isn't haunted. They're here for a private demonstration of IOSONO, a new immersive sound technology developed by Karlheinz Brandenburg -- the German inventor considered responsible for much of the development and commercialization of the MP3 codec in the 1980s and '90s.

Inside the dimly lit demo space, a ring of over 300 speakers hangs roughly 10 feet above the ground. Using a digital pen and a touch-sensitive tablet, a sound engineer drags individual sound elements from one point to another to direct the position of sound elements. Samples of phantasmic voices whisper, hiss and appear to be darting and sliding invisibly from one spot to another throughout the room.

The WSJ reports on a service in the Czech Republic that lets users sell their Wi-Fi connections to their neighbors (link good for seven days): This offering isn't as good as a similar one from WideNet and Wia in the Czech Republic which will do the billing for customers. The WSJ article covers a company called CzFree.net which requires customers to buy over $800 worth of gear and then allows them to sell connections to their neighbors. There is no mention of CzFree.net handling the billing, which I think is pretty key. I wouldn't want to have to deal with trying to make my neighbors pay me for something. Also, it doesn't appear that CzFree.net has a deal with a landline broadband provider, like WideNet does, which makes the legality of reselling connections questionable....
