Why Linux repositories are a huge
competitive advantage for Linux
07/12/2004 07:20 AM

My friend Robin Miller recently wrote a very decent article about how spoiled we Linux users are, which inspired me to write this article that I've been kind of meaning to write for a while anyway, an article about how the various Linux repositories are and have been such a vast competitive advantage for Linux.

Finding Competitive Advantage in
Training
03/14/2005 05:57 PM
Injecting e-Learning into the Corporate Training Program - The opportunity to improve employee knowledge and capabilities through e-Learning ranges from the most senior executive to the newest hire. This is due to the unprecedented reach of the web, its minimal cost, and its increasing ability to deliver the highest quality content - including video – to end users. Few areas of business are better suited than HR training and Professional Development to leverage the Internet. The nature and needs of corporate training matches the strengths of the web almost perfectly. For example, training involves delivering content to many people who are often in dispersed locations while the web is an increasingly reliable, powerful, ubiquitous and low cost media. Day Is Night: Microsoft Says Security Is
Its Competitive Advantage

Day Is Night: Microsoft Says Security Is
Its Competitive Advantage
07/09/2004 05:12 AM
Really not quite sure what to make of this, but apparently Microsoft believes that if they just say something it must be true. In the past few weeks there have been so many major Microsoft security problems, it's been nearly impossible to keep count. Yet, Steve Ballmer is going to stand on stage with a straight face at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference and claim that security is their competitive advantage. Even worse, he's doing this despite claiming the same thing last year, which included a number of promises about Microsoft's security upgrades, most of which they haven't actually done. Now, there are plenty of sites that bash Microsoft for being Microsoft, and that's really not worth wasting time over. However, if Microsoft really wants to claim they're serious about security, shouldn't they show us they're serious about security, rather than just telling us?

Seven open source business strategies
for competitive advantage
05/14/2004 09:16 AM
Open source presents a large potential competitive advantage for hardware and software vendors, and vendors of complementary or substitute services. Linux has contributed greatly to the adoption and success of OSS. Companies such as IBM, HP, Red Hat, Oracle, and recently, Novell, have invested in, and legitimized the use of Linux for enterprise applications -- including datacenter operations. Attorney/analyst John Koenig offers a listing of open source strategies that can bring great competitive advantages to companies if implemented correctly. Read on at ITMJ ...

BEA: huge adoption curve climbing very
fast for Linux.
03/11/2003 09:43 AM

From Computer World's interview with BEA's CEO Alfred Chuang:

What Linux trends are you seeing with BEA software?

Huge adoption curve climbing very fast for BEA over the last six to nine months. A lot of focus in the financial services marketplace, where there's a lot of experimentation and initial deployment going on with Linux on Intel. And I think the motivation in that arena is simplification and cost reduction, so they are looking to buy significantly less expensive hardware.

What's the breakdown of platforms on which BEA software is running?

About 50% is on Sun, and about 23%, 24% is on Hewlett-Packard. Hewlett-Packard has both Intel and non-Intel platforms in there. And then it drops off pretty quick. IBM hardware, I think, is 5% or 7%. In some countries, we sell a lot of IBM's hardware.

What about the Linux operating system?

Linux is around the 15% to 20% range, which has climbed pretty quickly.

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM
Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the company used them as weapons against free and open source software projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has truly seen the open source light?

MOSIX is a management system that allows a cluster of x86 nodes to perform like a parallel computer. It is particularly suitable to run intensive computing and massive I/O applications. In a MOSIX system there is no need to modify applications, link them with any library, or even assign processes to different nodes. It is done automatically, just "fork and forget", like in an SMP system. MOSIX is geared toward improved performance, overhead-free scalability and ease-of-use.

2.4 branch)

Kernel Mode Linux 2.4.30_001 (For Linux
2.4 branch)
04/05/2005 11:56 AM
Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous, the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static type checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.
Changes:
This version was merged with the 2.4.30 Linux kernel.

Openwall Linux kernel patch 2.4.30-ow1
(Linux 2.4 branch)
04/08/2005 10:32 AM
The Openwall Linux kernel patch is a collection of security "hardening" features for the Linux kernel. In addition to the new features, some versions of the patch contain various security fixes. The "hardening" features of the patch, while not a complete method of protection, provide an extra layer of security against the easier ways to exploit certain classes of vulnerabilities and/or reduce the impact of those vulnerabilities. The patch can also add a little bit more privacy to the system by restricting access to parts of /proc so that users may not see what others are doing.
Changes:
This release was updated to Linux 2.4.30.
