Ed Clay's Gameness International Joins
With Made To Order Websites to Produce
Revolutionary Distribution System for
the Martial Arts Industry
12/19/2004 03:29 PM
Nashville business owner Ed Clay (President and CEO of Gameness, Nashville Mixed Martial Arts, Punch Kickboxing, and Grappler Gear) has formerly joined efforts with Made To Order Websites (one of Tennessee's top web hosting companies) in order to develop an online procurement and distribution network for the now-famous Gameness clothing line. The venture, commonly referred to as "The Gameness Distributor System" has been architected by Shane Messer of The Incubator Group (a venture capital and business development firm also located in Nashville) and will provide a way to reach a huge number of customers throughout the martial arts industry via directly providing custom web sites to other martial arts schools and providing Gameness products to the students of those schools. British Library Prepares for the Future
http://www.researchinformation.info/rijanfeb04lynne_brindley.html

The British Library has done extensive research on the needs of tomorrow's networked knowledge society and has made recommendations for how librarians can adapt to provide users with the new kinds of service and support they will need. "At the British Library, we have introduced a market-facing approach to ensure that we align our services with the needs of our five key audience groups: researcher; business; library and information sector; learner; general public. We have also restructured internally to support our market-led strategy, and appointed a head of marketing for each audience group," writes British Library chief executive Lynne Brindley. The British Library has actively canvassed its patrons for suggestions, conducting focus groups and surveys with businesses and individual visitors. In response, it's developed a service geared toward the secure electronic delivery of documents to users' desktops, providing access to more than 100 million items under a copyright-compliant arrangement. In terms of managing digital resources, the British Library has focused on guaranteeing the integrity of the national published archive, says Brindley, "not least of which has been our work with publishers and other U.K. legal deposit libraries to secure the extension of legal deposit legislation to cover e-publications… (to) ensure the long-term preservation of our digital heritage." In addition, the British Library is planning to build a digital storage system that "will take any form of electronic material, and be highly scalable." In an effort to incorporate lessons learned from other institutions facing similar challenges, the British Library is active in a consortium that examines best practices in long-term preservation and is working with the Library of Congress and the Dutch National Library to share that knowledge.

British Library Zeroes In On E-Learning

British Library Zeroes In On E-Learning
http://www.ifla.org/IV/ifla70/papers/102e-Brindley.pdf

"Inspiring Learning for All" is a framework for a new program developed by the British Library for creating accessible learning in museums, archives and libraries. It is founded on four simple principles, which describe the characteristics of an accessible and inclusive organization: People (providing effective learning opportunities); places (creating accessible and inspiring learning environments); partnerships (building creative e-learning partnerships); and polices/plans/performance (placing learning at the heart of the institution). The framework is designed to stimulate professionals to focus on and improve the way learning is supported. Working from a broad definition of learning -- i.e., it is not related solely to formal curriculum, but rather to everyone's ability to access information, cultural resources or entertainment in order to develop as individuals -- the program recognizes that people learn in different ways and require a variety of stimuli to engage them in the learning process. It stresses that museums, libraries and archives need to remove barriers to access; cater for individual learning styles (not just ages); create exciting environments; use innovative methods; value learning experts; consult with users; and reach out to new users. The program will be discussed at the International Federation of Library Associations conference in August.

British Library audio archive coming

British Library audio archive coming 04/16/2004 03:38 PM
The British Library is releasing a ton of audio from its archive on the Web -- though the article implies that it will only be available to higher education institutions.
Examples held on the British Library site include a live recording of Paul Robeson in Othello, Florence Nightingale speaking in one of the earliest sound recordings, as well as the genesis of Sherlock Holmes.

These historic recordings will be made freely available to further and higher education institutions in the UK and will include a wide range of materials, including classical and popular music, broadcast radio, oral history, and field and location recordings of traditional music.

Report: Kyrgyzstan government hijacking

Report: Kyrgyzstan government hijacking
news websites
03/24/2005 12:05 AM
Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing reader and journalist Hans Henrik in Denmark says,
I published a disturbing story on my blog today about the ongoing online war between the government and the opposition in Kyrgy zstan.

Apparently the new government in Kyrgyzstan are hijacking opposition newspapers sites and are now pointing their URLs to government friendly news sites.

It is still a mystery what is going on in Kyrgyzstan. The newspapers in the country are nearly all government controlled or friendly towards the government in such a way that they can not be trusted when covering the ongoing dispute between the opposition and the newly elected government.

The situation gets more blurred by the lack of foreign correspondents and public access to the Internet in Kyrgyzstan. This means no bloggers or eyewitness.
