05/01/2004 09:31 PMAP - Last year, Steve Jobs received a pay package worth nearly $75
million. But the Apple Computer CEO's pay had a catch all but
$1 was in stock that he can't touch until 2006. There's been a big
shift in the way America's top executives are being paid, as
once-ubiquitous stock options are replaced by restricted stock and
other forms of pay.

TO RAPID BUSINESS GROWTH: How Emerging

the Costs and Risks of Expansion
06/23/2004 03:08 AMIt’s a myth that the information technology (IT) requirements of
emerging and midsize businesses are simpler than those of large
enterprises. Virtually every day, we interact with the technology and
business leaders of midsize companies whose IT demands not only rival
the requirements of much larger companies, but in many cases exceed
them.Fortunately, emerging and midsize businesses can resolve the
dilemma of updating their outmoded IT infrastructure without massive
one-time investments in technology. New technologies, such as
Microsoft® .NET, enable companies to leverage previous investments in
technology while step-by-step integrating their business systems to
enable an efficient, cost-effective, and flexible solution to driving
and managing growth. Learn

Discovering Berkeley DB
Discovering Berkeley DB
11/25/2003 10:23 PMI'm working on a project at the moment which involves exporting a
whole bunch of data out of an existing system. The system is written
in Perl and uses Berkeley DB files for most of its storage.
I'd never done anything with Berkeley DB before, but luckily Python
has a module which
seems to do all of the hard work for me:
>>> db = bsddb.btopen('xpand.db')
>>> db.keys()[0:10]
[':archives:index.html', ':art:test.html', ...
>>> db[':art:test.html']
'template;front.tp\x01\x01'
>>>
The Berkeley DB libraries are maintained by Sleepycat Software.
Unfortunately, their site is completely saturated with marketing
jargon. Our customers rely on
Berkeley DB for fast, scalable, reliable and cost-effective data
management for their mission-critical applications
. Great - now
what does it do exactly?
Some digging around turned up the real information: the Berkeley DB Tutorial
and Reference Guide, which contains pretty much everything you
could possible want to know about the technology. It turns out that at
a basic level Berkeley DB is just a very high performance, reliable
way of persisting dictionary style data structures - anything where a
piece of data can be stored and looked up using a unique key. The key
and the value can each be up to 4 gigabytes in length and can consist
of anything that can be crammed in to a string of bytes, so what you
do with it is completely up to you. The only operations available are
"store this value under this key", "check if this key exists" and
"retrieve the value for this key" so conceptually it's pretty simple -
the complicated stuff all happens under the hood.
It seems like a great alternative to a full on relational database
for simple applications, although I'm slightly confused by the license
which allows free use for open source products but requires a license
for commercial applications. Does that mean that if I use the bsddb
Python module in a commercial app I need to get a license from
Sleepycat?
Discovering Dickens
Discovering Dickens
01/24/2004 03:55 PMStanford is bringing back its popular Discovering Dickens community
reading project -- another example of what's possible with a healthy
public domain. (In other words, don't try this with anything much more
modern.)
In December 2002, Stanford’s Discovering Dickens
project began with the serial release of Charles Dickens’ novel
Great Expectations. By the time the project concluded in April, 2003,
it had enjoyed success far beyond what we had anticipated. Interest in
the project, which has attracted participants from around the country
and around the world, has remained keen, and we are happy to announce
our next project: Discovering Dickens 2004.
Between January 9 and April 16, 2004, Discovering Dickens will
rerelease the facsimile of Dickens’ famous novel of the French
Revolution, A Tale of Two Cities. In April, 1859, the first serialized
part of A Tale of Two Cities provided the lead piece for Dickens’
new periodical All the Year Round. On the strength of this weekly
serial, contemporary Victorian readership had swollen to 100,000
before the novel concluded in November, 1859.
Dickens himself played an interesting role in international
copyright's development, back in the day when the U.S. was a pirate
nation. (

Blogging and Discovering about Marqui
Blogging and Discovering about Marqui
12/30/2004 01:58 PMI've been waiting a bit to see what our bloggers thought about Marqui.
There have been a few stumbles (mainly my fault) but we're finally
looking like a real program now - so I can let you all know
preliminary results:
Lucas Gonze - at least tried to
try it out and is discovering that open source alternatives are
probably just as good. So I just gently remind Lucas that Marqui
ain't for open source wonks or even bloggers - it's for Mabel at the
H&R Block office in Winnepeg office to.....
Now I'm not saying Mabel ain't gonan use open source, but it's all
about the developers who build Mabel's software for her. It's THEM
who have to know the alternatives. Hopefully what they'll find is
that for the tradeoff of spending a little money (starting at $199 a
month) Marqui is pretty dam
convienient and simple - to build out large scale 'Communications
Management' solutions.
Eric Rice on the other hand - is
glad that Marqui is using Marqui - pointing to Janet Johnson's on-line brochure
case study. Eric may even
use it himself for a project.
Robin Good has probably the best written, most articulate, most persistent and idealistic posts of
them all and is keeping us all on our toes. This comes from our
one "professional" writer/blogger.
And Meryl Evans did an in-depth
analysis of the tool - check it out. That should give you a taste
of what Marqui is. And Jon Lebkowsky is pointing out
that Marqui is
trying to go beyond just text.
DL Byron points out how
M
arqui's SEO efforts point out clearly that they need to be doing
their OWN blogging - but we all knew that already - right?
Mitch Ratcliffe just kind of
acknowledges that he's part of the program, while defending the
integrity of it, the company and himself. Right on to Mitch - is all
I can say!
Nathan Weinberg has an honest assesment of where we are right now while
Richard Murray keeps trying to break things
and push the
envelope. Coolio! I was counting on that! Thanks Richard!
Jonathan Abad keeps cranking out posts
while Geek central thinks it's
as easy to use as using Microsoft Office.
While some - like Molly - just kind of do their
duty, others completely go off - like the head lemur.
I'd say I'm blown away by the quality of the blog posts so far, but
not surpirsed. I can't wait to see what the others will come up with.
At least Mr. Claus is
considering being a client.
Meanwhile Marqui is slowly getting it's act together. 2005 will
certainly be an interesting year!

entertainment industry at the Nashville Screenwriters Conference, the
organization has teamed up with Ed Rugoff from the prestigious
Chesterfield Writer’s Film Project to give aspiring screenwriters an
opportunity to take their work west – all the way to Hollywood. The
Showdown evaluates screenplays solely on the basis of story-telling
ability, meaning that all genres have the same chance of winning. The
winning screenplay writers will find themselves in front of the most
prestigious literary agencies and management companies in

Self-Publishing Looking Better
Self-Publishing Looking Better
04/27/2004 04:11 PMSelf-publishing of books has had a pretty bad reputation for a while.
There were a few success stories, but not many. Now, however,
technology is making it easier and much, much cheaper to self-publish,
meaning that
self-publishing is losing some of its
negative connotation. It's certainly not going to wipe out
professional publishers, who are there for a reason. However, it does
open up more possibilities for people who want to publish books for
very focused audiences, or those who see self-publishing as a kind of
minor league "warmup" for publishing a book the traditional way.
While some fear being inundated with dreadful books, that seems silly.
If the books are bad, no one is going to buy them. Besides, there
are already plenty of dreadful books out there that you never hear
about. A successful book generally requires a marketing campaign that
many individual authors are incapable of doing on their own - which is
why big publishers are around. However, for some authors, doing their
own publicity is a thrill, and gives them much more control over how
their book is promoted.

Does The Web Have A Publishing Cycle?
Does The Web Have A Publishing Cycle?
07/21/2004 08:22 PMSometimes it's difficult to break out of habits. While newspapers
have a clear reason for having a drop-dead deadline for submitting
articles, and a once-a-day publishing schedule, the web world offers
them plenty of flexibility in when they publish... which they seem to
have promptly ignored.
E-Media
Tidbits notes a
new study showing
many online newspapers stick to a once-a-day publishing schedule.
It's not that surprising that they do this. It fits within their
existing processes, and since many are reusing print copy anyway, it
makes some amount of sense. Still, you would expect them to start to
realize they can publish on a less strict schedule. It appears some
newspapers have made an effort to stay more regularly updated, but
many simply don't bother at all. Of course, in doing so, they risk
losing readers to other sites that are more timely.

Political Publishing
07/26/2004 05:41 PMThe newsmedia are stiff with wonderment at this new blogging thang,
personified by a few dozen of the pesky varmints
really being there (what
a concept) at the Democratic National Convention. Technorati
(disclosure: I’m on the Advisory Board) is trying to
do the bigger picture, and
every time I go to that page it’s interesting; also Br’er Dave
Sifry is going to be CNN’s Ambassador from Blogistan. We could do
way worse. The meta-story is more interesting than the story, almost
by definition; the Democratic party wants to have an extended
tightly-controlled five-day infomercial; the last thing they want is
actual news. The news media will play along to some extent but also be
furiously looking for some real surprise or conflict or subterfuge in
the spirit of if-it-bleeds-it-leads. Two obvious ways the Blogistanis
could make a difference would be by uncovering (unexpectedly) real
news, or by finding some way to make this largely formal and
content-free event a little more human, a little more meaningful, a
little funnier. Best of luck, boys and girls. (PS: While on the
subject of the political process and the Web as a medium, the
Electoral Vote Predictor
strikes me as elegant, seamless, and new.)

01/07/2003 02:46 PMBook Review: WarDriving
Book Review: WarDriving
05/27/2004 06:24 PMNobody likes to make enemies, but I have to be honest about the
dollar-to-content value of this book: Let me be clear from the outset.
I don't know any of the authors of this book, except by reputation,
and have nothing but the highest regard for their technical knowledge
and their achievements. The folks who wrote WarDriving: Drive, Detect,
Defend are experts about most of what they write about, and offer
great technical insights and tips throughout. That said, I can't
recommend this book primarily because the best advice is already
available on the Web for free in much the same form; chunks of the
most practical early part of the book are repetitive to cover
different operating systems or scenarios with the same approach; the
middle part of the book comprises a 60-page-long set of anecdotes with
long code extracts; and the last part of the book features security
advice that's somewhat strange focusing on commercial software and
hardware that's obscure and hard to use and mostly out of keeping with
the kind of audience that could possibly be interested in this title.
A factor that led to book bloat (520 pages, no CD-ROM, $49.99) is the
lengthy reproduction of code, sometimes double spaced that a reader
must be expected to input rather than download or copy and paste from
a Web page. Further, many of the programs seem too idiosyncratic to be
of general utility, arguing against their inclusion in the printed
book even if other programs were printed in full. For fairness's sake,
after reading this book a few weeks ago, I sent the publisher's
publicist contact my remarks and a list of errors found in the book. I
was promised some follow up and didn't get it, so the statute of
limitations of waiting for a response to specifics has ended. I should
also make it clear that I have co-written a book on wireless
networking which has practically no overlap with this book. In
general, the book is best at collecting and providing documentation on
the trickiest aspects of scanning for, recording, and defending
against wardriving and Wi-Fi network cracking. Some of the areas on
defense are the strongest in the book, although other areas seem
highly misguided. From the first page of the book to the end of
Chapter 7, page 243, it's at its strongest. It's a cogent, how-to
guide to installing and...

Book Review: Against All Enemies
Book Review: Against All Enemies
04/17/2004 03:20 PMWhen Against All Enemies was published a few weeks ago, it was greeted
by a flurry of press and blogsphere discussion, almost entirely
focused on the book's criticisms of the Bush administration. Those
criticisms are largely contained within the book's final chapter, a
chapter that feels grafted on, and which is significantly different in
tone from the rest of the book. It's unfortunate that this chapter has
become the focus for discussion of the book - a fact which argues
that, perhaps, it shouldn't have been included at all. The majority
of the book is a discussion of how the first Bush administration and
the Clinton administration gradually came to realize the existence of
al Qaeda and tried to figure out what to do about it. The story is
framed, at the beginning and the end, by the events of September 11,
2001 (during which Clarke was one of the people primarily responsible
for government operations during the hours until President Bush took
charge) - but that is simply the framing; the real meat of the book
takes place in an earlier time. The time that laid the groundwork for
that day.
