More Whitewash, Jeeves?

More Whitewash, Jeeves?

More Whitewash, Jeeves? 07/12/2004 04:10 AM

As the verdict of Butler Report into the intelligence used to justify the war in Iraq, draws near in Britain, a senior intelligence source reve als that MI6 took the "rare step" of withdrawing the intelligence assessment that underpinned the claim that Saddam had continued to produce WMD (an admission that such information was fundamentally unreliable), however Blair did not tell the public "that the evidence of WMD was crumbling beneath him". [Wat ch the Panorama programme in question here for 7 days from 11-7-2004] The Dossier that Lord Hutton declared was not sexed-up (leading to senior BBC resignations), Dr Brian Jones (former head of the nuclear, chemical and biological branch of the Ministry of Defence's Defence Intelligence Staff) says was sexed-up, and details exactly how.

Whitewash

Even as a variety of companies have offered up their alterna tive to the Induce Act, the Copyright Office has continued on their efforts, under the watchful eye of the woman who found the original Induce Act too weak. Today, they came out with their first draft of the revised bill, and it includes a few changes designed to quiet the unruly mob of filthy file sharers who actually took a look at the original bill and realized it would ban an awful lot. So, the new language makes the whole "induce" part "intentionally induce" which is a slight improvement. However, it leaves open plenty of other loopholes, and it looks like plenty of items on Hatch's Hit List will still suddenly become illegal for no good reason other than Senator Hatch feels the need to do somethi ng, even if it causes more problems than it solves.

Tony Perkins has invited you to
whitewash his fence
11/11/2003 06:49 PM
Hilarious running commentary on an email that Red Herring founder Tony Perkins wrote to the readers of his Always On Blog about his forthcoming book on Google that he wants other people to research and write for him. (If Perkins can pull it off, good for him, I say.)
Writing a book is a very painful experience. And frankly, the only way I can pull this off under a tight deadline (I want it out before Google goes public), is to write it with AlwaysOn members. Writing a book is so painful, I find it easier if someone else does all the hard work. So I'm asking you, members of the AlwaysOn network, to give me all of your ideas.

Ask Jeeves Being Purchased

Ask Jeeves Being Purchased 03/22/2005 04:23 PM

Cnet is reporting that Ask Jeeves is being purchased by Interactive Corp. Ask Jeeves runs ask.com, excite.com, and iwon.com along with it’s own search engine website. Interactive Corp owns Expedia.com, ticketmaster.com, match.com, and citysearch. Interactive Corp is run by Barry Diller. Cnet says ..

Ask Jeeves differs from other search engines in that it responds to plain English questions such as "What is March Madness?" rather than simple keyword searches. That was one of the elements of the company that made it most appealing as an acquisition target, Diller said.

"We believe that in the future (Ask Jeeves) has the potential to become one of the great brands on the Internet and beyond," Diller said in a statement. "And by beyond we mean in wireless, (and) in the search for anything on any device."

The search company, known for the butler figure that serves as its emblem, will operate as an independent business unit with operations headquartered in Oakland, Calif., following completion of the acquisition. If the deal passes regulatory scrutiny and gains approval of Ask Jeeves' shareholders, IAC said it expects to close the transaction late in the second quarter or early in the third quarter.

IAC announces Ask Jeeves buyout 03/22/2005 03:32 PM
InterActiveCorp on Monday announced it has agreed to buy the fourth largest search engine in the United States, Ask Jeeves, for $1.85 billion. InterActiveCorp intends to buy back at least 60 percent of the shares it plans to issue for acquisition through previously authorized share repurchase programs to offset a substantial portion of the dilution from the transaction with cash. “Joining IAC will enable us to play on a much larger field," Ask Jeeves CEO Steve Berkowitz said. "We are excited about the opportunity to serve as the connection between IAC’s constellation of leading online properties to share users and content. Ask Jeeves Personalizes After The Fact
As Well

Ask Jeeves Personalizes After The Fact
As Well
09/21/2004 12:29 PM
Ask Jeeves apparently planned out a big publicity push for the launch of their new "personalized" feature for their search, but they came a week too late. What's amusing is that at least two different sites in the past week and a half "accidentally" broke the embargo on the news about Ask Jeeves' new personalized features, so you could say this wasn't exactly an Apple-level surprise, but Ask Jeeves is starting to let users store and share their search results. The reason it's a week too late is that, as we mentioned, two search engines announc ed the same thing last week. Still, it's becoming clear that the search engines are trying to solve the biggest problem that everyone always points out in the search busines: how can search engines be sticky? Switching costs are fairly low, but they figure that won't be the case if you have all your bookmarks stored with the search engine. So, now the question is whether or not users really want to be tied to the search engine, who is likely to mine your saved searches for targeted marketing, or would prefer to use an independent bookmarking service like Furl or del.icio.us -- or any other random such system (or hell, just store them locally)? In the meantime, how long will it be until Google launches the same thing... along with 1 gig of storage (of course)?
