Cool Tools on the original Swatch
Cool Tools on the original Swatch
04/18/2005 02:40 PMMark Frauenfelder:
In the latest Cool Tools, Kevin Kelly explains why he loves the
original Swatch watch.
It's what a watch should be: waterproof, nearly
indestructible, accurate, and radically legible. Clear,
black-on-white glow-in-the-dark numbers (no hour ticks) in an analog
face. Day/date optional. And best of all, at $40 the Swatch is
probably the cheapest rugged watch you can buy. Luxury watches perplex
me: what are you getting extra? Sure, the plastic wristbands of the
Swatch wear out and are cheaply replaced every five years, but you'll
lose a Swatch before it crashes.

Can't Make It to NYC? Try the Little

12/29/2004 12:15 PMAP - New York, eat your heart out. So goes the message from this
heartland town known as the Little Apple, where a New Year's event
modeled after the one in Times Square is planned.

12/24/2004 01:01 PMNow that I have a phone that takes some impressive photos (This shot is
probably the best example I've seen for color, depth, and light that
the little cam can capture), I really wish iPhoto could manage my
images instead of my preview-free bluetooth file browser.
I bet it'd be trivial for Apple to enable connections via Bluetooth
(to your paired devices) to import photos.

Apple Looking To Make iPods Droppable
Apple Looking To Make iPods Droppable
12/24/2004 12:18 PMMy IBM Thinkpad has a feature where it tries to recognize if the
laptop is falling, and if it is, to protect the hard drive to
(hopefully) prevent damage. It appears tha Apple has been
working on a similar
technology for the more-likely-to-be-dropped iPod. Apple
apparently filed for a patent on the technology in June 2003. It's
unclear from the article if IBM filed for a similar patent, but if
they had it's likely they did so earlier, because the Thinkpads
started including the feature in October of 2003.

Apple
09/03/2004 08:23 AMAsustek Computer has received OEM orders for the iPod mini digital
music player from Apple Computer, according to market sources. Asustek
is the second Taiwan-based manufacturer of the digital devices since
Inventec Appliances also produces the iPod for Apple. Asustek will
assemble and ship the iPod to Apple from its plant in Suzhou, Jiangsu
Province (China), the sources said.
The iPod orders will help Asustek in working toward its goal of
becoming a key provider of consumer electronics products, the sources
noted. In related news, Inventec is expected to continue to supply
Apple with its current iPod models. In addition, Inventec is also
likely to secure orders for a similar version of the iPod from
Hewlett-Packard (HP), the sources said. Apple and HP entered into an
agreement earlier this year for HP to resell the iPod under the HP
brand.
Asustek and Inventec both declined to comment on the report, citing
client confidentiality

WIRELESS WATCH
2004 is going on in Japan until Friday, and there are plenty of new
product demonstrations as well as those currently in development on
display. This year's hot sheet includes NTT DoCoMo's "UbiButton," a
device similar in form factor to a wristwatch. By detecting the shock
waves in the arm created by a simple snapping of the fingers, a switch
is flipped that can, for example, turn a light on and off. In other
words, DoCoMo has glorified The Clapper to now be called The Snapper.
Actually, I know a couple people that can't snap their fingers...what
the hell are they supposed to do? [Uhm, clap? - ed] Other
highlights from the convention included a working model of a Bluetooth
pen, and DDI Pocket's "Jacketphone," a SD card sized PHS module.
