Label Printer Pro 6.2.3 supports new
Avery labels
12/22/2004 01:43 AMPay&Play Software has released Label Printer Pro 6.2.3, the newest
version of its utility for printing shipping labels, CD and DVD
labels, business cards and more. This free upgrade adds support for
Avery's latest CD/DVD combination labels, which offer several shapes
on one page. In addition, when using Label Printer Pro in demo mode,
the software warns you before printing, since it places the word
"unregistered" across all labels until the US$29.95 license fee is
paid. System requirements are not available on the developer's Web
site.

04/15/2005 06:08 PMLast month, I posted an entry touching on some business lessons

come. But last night, while reading William Saroyan's The...
William Gibson interview
William Gibson interview
02/18/2004 10:53 AMHere's a great interview with William Gibson, who is on the road
promoting the paperback of his brilliant novel of apophenia run wild,
Pattern Recognition (see my
review, too).
"When you write a science-fiction novel set in some sort of
recognizable future, as soon as you finish it you have the dubious
pleasure of watching it acquire a patina of quaint technological
obsolescence. For instance, there are no cell phones in Neuromancer. I
couldn't have foreseen them. It would have seemed corny, like Dick
Tracy wrist radios."
And he never set out to predict how we might be living a few decades
hence. "I always assumed that social-science fiction - anything set on
Earth in a not-too-distant future - is just a mutant version of the
present. But the easiest hook to hang on me was that I was a futurist.
I had always maintained that I was squinting at the present in a
certain way."

New Scientist (almost) gets it
New Scientist (almost) gets it
09/15/2004 09:25 AMThere's a great article in the
New Scientist about the dangers
in IP extremism. As it rightly notes,
THERE are some
things in life we take for granted. Among them are the ability to lend
each other books, record TV programmes, back up expensive computer
programs, and sell on our old CDs when we've got tired of them. ...
That could change. New technologies are giving copyright owners the
power to control the time and place we can view or play digital
versions of music, films and text so tightly that we run the risk of
losing these rights altogether.
But to read the article
at the New Scientist website, you'll need to
subscribe. Oh well. One step at a time.

William Gibson on John Shirley
William Gibson on John Shirley
03/20/2003 06:37 PMHere's William Gibson's introduction to John Shirley's proto-cyberpunk
novel, City Come a Walkin'.
Shirley made the plastic-covered Sears sofa that was the main body of
seventies sf recede wonderfully. Discovering his fiction was like
hearing Patti Smith's Horses for the first time: the archetypal form
passionately re-inhabited by a debauched yet strangely virginal
practitioner, one whose very ability to do this at all was constantly
thrown into question by the demands of what was in effect a
shamanistic act. There is a similar ragged-ass derring-do, the sense
of the artist burning to speak in tongues. They invoke their
particular (and often overlapping, and indeed she was one of his) gods
and plunge out of downscale teenage bedrooms, brandishing shards of
imagery as peculiarly-shaped as prison shivs.

Scientist - Scientists created a closed, automated system to
conduct simple labor intensive scientific experiments in molecular
genetics. The robot creates hypothesis and tests them. Supposedly it
works more efficiently (picks less expensive experiments, and fewer of
them) then its human counterparts (graduate students in biology and
comp sci.). More detailed article in Nature

William Hung sings at a Jays game
William Hung sings at a Jays game
05/31/2004 05:15 PMWilliam Hung is the nerdy Hong Kong-born engineering student who had a
disastrous and very brave appearance on American Idol. The video of
that audition made him into a net-celeb, and landed him a record deal,
despite his off-key singing (his disc has sold over 100,000 copies!).
His latest gig was singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" at a Blue
Jays game:
Hung's presence brought a gaggle of media usually indifferent to
baseball to the game, including staff from Rolling Stone magazine. A
team official said more media credentials were issued Sunday than on
opening day.
