Does Your Software Need A Personality
Test?

Does Your Software Need A Personality
Test?
11/12/2003 01:35 PM
There are all different theories in designing software, but I've never heard of trying to give an application the famous Myers-Briggs personality test to design its user interface. However, that's what an anti-spam software company has done. They looked over the various Myers-Briggs personality profiles to find the personality that most matched "spam stopping" and chose "ESTJ" or the "Guardian Supervisor", and then made user interface choices based on what sort of person that was likely to portray. It's certainly a different approach, and it will be interesting to see how effective (if at all) it is. It sounds like some of the design choices they made (e.g., no help menu) may sound good on paper, but will confuse users (no matter what their personality type) who are just used to applications working in a specific way. Users expect a certain comfort level, even in new applications, so that the learning curve isn't too much of a hurdle for them to deal with.

AMD Has Started Shipping 90nm Products

AMD Has Started Shipping 90nm Products 08/13/2004 10:26 AM
A report by the Investor's Hub claims that AMD has begun shipments of its 90nm AMD64 processors. AMD is a little late to the game, what with Intel and IBM’s 90nm processors already on the market. Unlike these two companies AMD hasn't been experiencing any major delays or processor defects. So just maybe being late to this game was the best move.

AMD fans have a lot to look forward to in the second half of this year. As AMD is rolling out three Opteron processors known as 'Venus', 'Troy', and 'Athens'. According to AMDs roadmap we'll also see a Mobile Athlon 64 processor dubbed 'Oakville', and a desktop Athlon 64 processor called 'Winchester'. On a separate note AMD has plan to release its dual-core processors in the second half of next year.

So far AMD hasn't had a lot of headaches from the transition from 130nm to 90nm fabrication. Until AMD actually release its 90nm processors we won't know for sure. The good news about not being the first to release a 90nm processor is, you can learn from your competitor’s mistakes. Knowing AMD, it did exactly that.

Opera releases test version of new
browser software program
12/24/2004 12:09 PM
Opera Software released a beta version of its Web browser software upgrade today, adding stronger support for RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and technology that allows users to navigate through voice commands and have Web pages read to them. Enough improvements have been made in the beta release that the final version of this download will be turned into a major new release instead of an ordinary incremental upgrade, according to CNET News. "The new Opera version has dramatic improvements under the hood, in addition to some very helpful new features to welcome more and more users to take advantage of browsing the Internet in a fast, safe and customizable way," Opera Chief Executive Officer Jon S. von Tetzchner said in a statement. The new Opera beta version also includes user interface improvements such as bigger browsing space, cleaner menus, and better printing support, the company says. The browser also now works with Google's Gmail, correcting a problem that had led some Opera users to switch to Firefox. Opera licensed IBM's Embedded ViaVoice technology early in the year, which powers the voice support in the new release.
