Yahoo Buys Flickr 03/22/2005 04:23 PM

Yahoo! has agreed to buy Ludicorp Research and Development, owners of photo sharing website Flickr, for an undisclosed sum. Flickr enables users to personalise photo collections on the web, where they can store, sort, search and share their photos. Flickr will remain a standalone site for now. The company's employees, however, will relocate to Sunnyvale later this year.

Earlier this week, Yahoo announced Yahoo 360. The service combines a new blogging tool, along with several longtime Yahoo products, including instant messaging, photo storage and sharing, and Internet radio. It also offers tools for sharing recommendations about places to eat, favorite movies, music and so on. Both the 360 move and the acquisition of Flickr and parent company Ludicorp Research & Development come as social networking and blogging draw increased interest from rivals. Microsoft in December added a blog product for its MSN Web service, called MSN Spaces. Google, meanwhile, owns Web log service Blogger and social networking site Orkut.

Yahoo buys Musicmatch

Yahoo buys Musicmatch 09/14/2004 12:54 PM

Yahoo's could not do it on their own so they had to buy one of my most favored music vendors. I have always been a big fan of Musicmatch and now that Yahoo has just bought them out I am sure they will ruin it. I stopped using Yahoo and brands they own when they went to a pay model on listing your site with them. I wonder if my Lifetime upgrade of Musicmatch will be honored. [News.co m]

Yahoo Buys Oddpost In A Gmail-Inspired
Moment

Yahoo Buys Oddpost In A Gmail-Inspired
Moment
07/09/2004 08:29 PM
So, we actually heard about this a couple weeks ago, when someone (who knew) passed on the fact that Yahoo had bought Oddpost in an attempt to fight back against the Gmail craze. Now, though, the deal is official, so it's okay to talk about it (though it had been hinte d at earlier this week). It's really not that surprising, after all. Yahoo knew they needed to upgrade their email, and Oddpost has a great reputation for their interface. You can be sure that Yahoo wasn't the only company sniffing around and debating whether or not to buy up Oddpost. While it's probably not going to be the lead in most stories, it is quite interesting that one of Oddpost's nicer features is an integrated RSS reader. Yahoo keeps talking up the power of RSS, and perhaps this will allow them to make a bigger commitment. However, in all likelihood, it was just the mail interface that fascinated them. It seems like a good move by Yahoo who needed to do something.
