The soul

The soul 05/04/2004 03:42 AM

Rough ly seven years ago: "I think each of us has a kernel, under all the layers of experience and pain, that's ageless and perfect. Some people call this a heart, the organ that pumps blood thru our bodies. Others call it a spirit, the essence of the person. Whatever you call it, it's there, and you can easily find it."

Many years ago at a workshop I asked the teacher if goose bumps are love or fear. He didn't answer. Now I think I know. I get goose bumps when my point is touched. Don't know what that means? Read the story .

Seeing Both Sides

Seeing Both Sides 12/15/2002 03:28 AM
We take it for granted that many hi-tech workers (often software engineers) have a very hard time seeing their work from a business point of view. To many, it's just technology. They're building software, not business tools. Creating hacks rather...

Is is possible to see both sides? 12/19/2003 11:36 AM
Is is possible to see both sides? Should we all try to see both sides of an issue before making a decision? Perhaps the National Center for Policy Analysis would be a good place to start. There are sections for Global Warming, Social Security, Environment and Federal Spending, just to name a few. In many cases the opposing viewpoints are written by the lawmakers themselves. There is even a section titled Debate Central, in case you like that kind of thing.

Spam For Your Soul?

Spam For Your Soul? 03/28/2005 06:00 AM
With spam filters getting better all the time, spammers are continuing their efforts to get around them by including some non-spammy text in just about any email they send. This isn't new, of course. Spammers have been using such techniques for many years. However, it appears that some writers-block suffering writers have given up on the old standby of reply ing to spam and are now searching through spam for words of enlightenment. It takes some time, apparently, but you can pick out all sorts of tidbits for divine inspiration if you're willing to look hard enough. Of course, not all of it is just designed to get around filters. It turns out that some ministers are now spamming as well.

B illyuns and billyuns of years ago, or at least a fair while back, there used to be a kingdom on the moon. The kingdom had a princess named Serenity, and she was guarded by representatives of nearby planets. Things being as they were, said representatives were all, teenagers in sailor suits. Look, no one said it was going to be sensible.

Walt would turn over in his cryonic chamber... (I know, I know, it's not true.) Speaking of famil y trees, Roy Disney (the last board member with ties to the founding family) resigned from the company Sunday, calling for the ouster of Chairman Michael Eisner. Stanley Gold soon soon followed. In a harsh letter, Disney said the entertainment conglomerate had "lost its focus, its creative energy, and its heritage" and that the public now held the perception that company is "rapacious, soul-less, and always looking for the 'qu ick buck'." No word yet from the Disneyland obsessives, but the folks at MousePlanet 's Mousepad seem optimistic about this development...

How to sign up for ABC RSS without

How to sign up for ABC RSS without
selling your soul
06/28/2004 06:39 AM
ABC News has a good selection of RSS feeds. Unfortunately, in order to reach the page where they're listed, you have to clic k through this disgusting, clueless, multi-page "agreement" (excerpted below):
4. CONFIDENTIALITY. During the term of this Agreement, you may have access to some of ABC News's nonpublic technical or product information ("Proprietary Information"). Such Proprietary Information shall belong solely to ABC News. You shall not, except as expressly authorized by this Agreement, use or disclose Proprietary Information without the prior written consent of ABC News unless such Proprietary Information becomes part of the public domain through no fault of yours. You agree (i) not to disclose any Proprietary Information to any third parties, (ii) not to use any Proprietary Information for any purposes except carrying out your rights and responsibilities under this Agreement, and (iii) to keep the Proprietary Information confidential using the same degree of care you use to protect your own confidential information, as long as you use at least reasonable care. You acknowledge and agree that due to the unique nature of ABC News's Proprietary Information, there can be no adequate remedy at law for any breach of its obligations hereunder, that any such breach may allow you or third parties to unfairly compete with ABC News resulting in irreparable harm to ABC News, and therefore, that upon any such breach or threat thereof, ABC News shall be entitled to injunctions and other appropriate equitable relief in addition to whatever remedies it may have at law.

5. PUBLICITY. ABC News may use your name in releases, customer lists, marketing and other materials. Unless otherwise expressly permitted by ABC News, you may not create, publish, or distribute any items that reference ABC News without first submitting those items to ABC News and receiving ABC News's written consent.

Get that? You have to sign onto a confidentiality agreement in order to read the RSS feeds at ABC! And sign away your publicity rights. And agree not to forward on any ABC stories without permission.

Luckily, I didn't agree to any of that. I deleted everything in the text field containing the agreement, substituted some rude text of my own and found myself a nice list of all of ABC's XML feeds. If you'd like to directly subscribe to ABC's RSS without selling your soul by clicking through their one-sided adhesion contract, here are the direct URLs:

Havel on the soul of democracy

Havel on the soul of democracy 11/17/2003 01:59 PM
Jay Rosen, in a fine piece on what's wrong with politics, quotes Vaclav Havel: Many of the traditional mechanisms of democracy created and developed and conserved in the modern era are so linked to the cult of objectivity and statistical average that they can annul human individuality. We can see this in political language, where cliche often squeezes out a personal tone. And when a personal tone does crop up, it is usually calculated, not an outburst of personal authenticity. Sooner or later politics will be faced with the task of finding a new, postmodern face. A politician must become...

Court Sides With Oracle

Court Sides With Oracle 09/09/2004 11:51 PM

Oracle wins right to pursue rival: PeopleSoft may have played their last hand:

Ellison and Henley wasted no time in firing off a letter to PeopleSoft's board, requesting a meeting to hammer out a deal, potentially the largest tech merger since Hewlett-Packard and Compaq Computer in 2002.

We started covering this a long time ago. Back then (14 months ago), I said:

t's worth saying that when this story broke, I thought it was just another egotistical Larry Ellison thing — something he did off the top of his head just for giggles, ego, and to shake up the competition. He's something of a dashing playboy-type guy, and this would fit.

But more and more, it seems that he's not kidding and he's going to take PeopleSoft in whatever way he can. Money is on his side, time is on his side, and I believe the only thing that will stop the deal are the anti-trust considerations.

Looks like I was pretty close to the truth.
