12/28/2004 07:21 PMWho is this so-called Headline Animator? I
demand answers. Now!: Push your headlines anywhere you can put a
graphic. Check the screencaps on this page for some interesting
uses.
The Animator is a dynamically generated graphic that fades
between the text of 5 most recent items in a publisher's FeedBurner
feed. Publishers who sign up with FeedBurner to republish their XML
feeds can get this graphic uniquely generated for each feed they set
up in their account.

Experimenting with FeedBurner
06/17/2005 07:17 PMI've switched this blogs's feed over to FeedBurner to get a better idea
of what they're all about. If you're viewing this in an RSS reader, can you do
me a favor and update it to use http://feeds.feedburne
r.com/NickBradbury as the URL for this feed? In FeedDemon, this
is done by right-clicking on the feed in the channel bar,
then selecting "Properties" and entering the new address.
Update: Several people have asked me whether
FeedDemon automatically handles redirects - it does. However, my blog
is hosted by TypePad, which like other hosted blog services doesn't
provide a way to redirect your feed to a new location.

Nearly 300 of you still get your feed from them. I understand that
some of you do not get new posted information for sometimes up to 2-3
days later. Never mind that they posted some information on a weblog
versus sending out a newsletter that told us how to cure it, we missed
it, and I was not happy with the service and pulled the plug.

03/14/2005 05:45 PM
I've been wanting to calibrate my Bloglines-based analyses of RSS
subscriptions [
1,
2] with
other sources of data. Feedburner came first to mind, and Richard
McManus had the same thought:
Last week I wrote about my blog's
subscription growth, inspired by Jon Udell's analysis of Bloglin
es Public Subscribers. In a subsequent email discussion with Jon
Udell, we both wondered whether Feedburner data would show similar
trends to the Bloglines data. Jon suggested a collaborative project
could be launched in the blogosphere with the aim of calibrating the
Bloglines data. Of course I thought this was a great idea, so I
contacted Dick
Costolo and Eric
Lunt from Feedburner to
ask if they'd be willing to help. Dick and Eric were very enthusiastic
about the idea and Eric soon whipped up a couple of templates for us,
accessible via RESTish URLs. [Read/Write Web: Collaborative
Feedburner Stats Project]

photo syndication tools
07/15/2004 05:31 AMLudicorp, who make the awesome Flickr photo-sharing service, have
signed a deal with Feedburner to develop new tools and standards for
syndicating photos -- and they've released their first technology,
called "splicing." (Disclosure: I am on Ludicorp's advisory board)
Splicing gives people the ability to offer a single RSS feed which
contains a chronologically ordered arrangement of their photostream
from Flickr and the feed from their existing blog (so you might end up
with something like blog post, blog post, photo, photo, photo, blog
post, photo, blog post, photo, photo, and so on).
Part of the story is this: photos are a perfect application of RSS.
You can stick an html reference to a photo into a feed right now, but
our namespace will allow for passing along the social context of the
image: the raw pixels have value, but the title, description,
comments, tags and notes, along with things like EXIF data add a whole
other dimension of value.

Someone writing headline copy at Reuters this morning committed a
hilarious crime against the English language.
Catholic monks living on an island off the coast of Wales have flown
in a satellite dish to watch the Pope's funeral.
Despite the flying saucer image this conjures, the monks in fact
merely ordered a satellite dish for the monastery, which was then
delivered to their island by helicopter.
