If you aren't into books about war, corrupt politicians, oil,
intelligence [or lack thereof], Iraq, Islam, the Atkin's Diet, the
Chicken Soup series or some variation on the theme of horseracing ala
Seabiscuit there are precious few new books to interest or excite save
for Tom Wolfe's upcoming novel finally getting a title and a
publication date. I spent a little while combing through about a dozen
publisher's upcoming books and it looks like it's going to be a slow
summer.

Portability: Keep Your Cell Number When
You Switch, But What Happens to the Old
Phone?
05/31/2004 02:00 PM"Number portability" began in November for parts of the country, but
on Monday it will be available throughout the nation. Millions of
cellular phone users are about to discover that when they switch
companies they can keep their number, but a new phone will be
required. One company offers consumers an easy way to get rid of old
cell phones and get paid cash for doing it. [PRWEB May 21, 2004]

04/20/2004 11:26 PMIn an academic setting, a score of 90 percent earns an automatic "A".
By that measure, the team shaping Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 merits
a similar high passing grade. When the innovative application debuted
last October, it reflected the pioneering edge of the digital
note-taking category. Today, Microsoft honed that edge by announcing
the preview release of Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1
(OneNote SP1). Ninety percent of the features included in the software
update are a direct result of customer input and feedback -- with the
remaining 10 percent coming from indirect customer feedback.

05/20/2004 11:37 AMThe Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown says he considered including
another theory in the book that would have inflamed Christians even
more than the notion that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and made
babies. What if Jesus
survived the crucifixion? According to this AP Article,
"Brown said the theory is backed by a number of 'very credible
sources,' but that he ultimately decided it was too flimsy." I'm
burned out on the whole
Holy
Blood, Holy Grail trip though. Brown's next book, set in
Washington, revolves around the Masons! Apparently, the dust jacket of
The Da Vinci Code contains a clue about the sequel.

In a follow-up to the recent popular feature on an archive of
Estonian commercials from the 80s, the Sanomat had an article
on Sunday about a similar site filled with Hungarian commercials which are
completely incomprehensible in spite of Hungarian being linguistically
close to Finnish. Number 42 features two adorable Saint Bernard
puppies and though I've no idea what the commercial is pitching, the
little furry babies are understandable in any language. :)

Live On Stage! continues to get better and better, and I'm
running out of ways to blog about how much fun I had on the stage, and
how much the audience enjoyed the show . . . so I'm not even going to
try this week. I'll just settle on: IT WAS AWESOME. If you're
anywhere near Hollywood on a night that we're doing the show,
you simply must come out and see us.
Tonight, my friend Drew Curtis (who is responsible for Fark) and I will be in studio together
on The David Lawrence
Show from 8pm until 10pm PST. We'll take phone calls and instant
messages, and I can't wait to see what happens when the worlds of Fark
and WWdN collide on the radio. It's going to be supermegaawesome.
There are several different listening options at the show's
website.

— Performed by Three Dog Night
If AppleInsider's reports are to be believed, it appears as though
Apple, after nearly more than 20 years of preaching the finer points
of key strokes, has caved in to the pressure and is "feverishly
working on a two-button wireless optical mouse."
Feverishly working? To add a second button based on technology that
first appeared in the early 80s?
And besides, does it even matter anymore?
As we all know, there are a slew of options out there for two-,
three-, four or even five-button mouse lovers, and many are designed
with Apple’s own sense of style. Optical, Bluetooth, portable,
trackball — they’re all available, and they’re all very capable.
So, again I ask, does it matter if there's an Apple symbol on its
face?
While Apple can certainly take credit for the mouse revolution, its,
or rather, Steve's, stubbornness has forced many of its faithful user
to turn elsewhere (some even to dreaded Microsoft) for their mousing
needs. We've accepted, adapted and moved on. Some of us have learned
to love using one-button and, if nothing else, we’ve all learned to
respect our keyboards as more than mere typing instruments.
Over the years, Apple’s one-button mouse has become a symbol of the
what sets it apart from the rest of the computing world. Sleek, simple
and smooth, Apple's mouse is the epitome of the company's "Think
Different" slogan, whether tucked away in our closets or proudly
displayed on our desks.
Sure, we've argued. We've signed petitions. We've chided Apple for its
doggedness.
But all along, we were proud to be different. We secretly relished the
confused looks from the Unfamiliar.
So why change? Why now? Two words: Mac mini.
I’m guessing sales of the little wonder are far exceeding Apple's most
generous estimates while mouse sales are proportionately lagging. By
offering a two-button mouse direct from Apple, all those switchers who
just can't seem to figure out the point of a single button will have
an option to complete their aesthetically-pleasing computer with an
equally-eye-appealing mouse.
So why not a keyboard? Or iWork? Or an Airport Express?
Think of it like plain or Peanut or Crispy M&M’s at the checkout line.
But rest assured, Apple's one-button mouse will never be discontinued,
and I'm quite certain it will remain the default on all new Macs. But
with a two-button option, switching shoppers will likely linger in
Apple's store just a little longer before running home with their new
Mac mini.
So don't be offended, and stop preaching all those doomsday
prophesies. It's not the end of the world, nor is it the end of
Apple’s trademark one-button mouse. Think of it as nothing more than
the start of a new world of Apple-branded options.
And as Steve once said, "We like options."
