05/27/2004 12:28 PMI get pissed every-time I walk into Blockbuster they may have the
latest movies but their rentals are the highest in town and I always
try and support the independents as a result. I can honestly say
though that I do not rent $24.99 worth of Video's a month which is
what the service is going to cost. You only get 2 Video's at a time
you keep them as long as you want but you only get to check-out two
movies. Not sure about you folks but we usually rent 3 per weekend.
The hassle of having to drive the 4 miles through traffic to get them
is not a winner in my book. [DesignTechnica<

Amazon Might Partner With Netflix Or
Blockbuster To Rent DVDs In The US
04/14/2005 10:36 PMLast year, Netflix surprised a lot of people by announcing that they
believed
Amazo
n was about to enter the DVD rental market. It's not often that
one company's entrance into a market is announced by a potential
competitor. While Amazon eventually did launch a DVD rental service,
it
was only in the UK. Perhaps Amazon's brief experience in that
market has convinced Jeff Bezos that the company would be better off
not going it alone in the US. Amazon execs have reportedly been
chatting with both
Netflix and Blockbuster about a partnership to offer DVD rentals
in the US. Depending on the terms offered (a big if, of course),
Netflix would probably be smart to jump on this opportunity. It keeps
Amazon from competing directly, and gives them access not only to
Amazon's marketing reach, but also could allow them to better tie into
Amazon's customer database and recommendation information -- which
could strengthen Netflix's own recommendation offering.

Blockbuster To Pay Up For No Late Fee
Fees
03/29/2005 02:05 PMFollowing Blockbuster's plan to
drop
late fees in favor of a longer grace period and then a large lump
charge for "buying the movie" if you waited too long to return the
film, New Jersey came along and
sued
Blockbuster for being misleading about its "no late fees"
marketing slogan. Apparently, 46 other states jumped on the bandwagon
and sued as well. Sensing trouble, it appears that Blockbuster has
given in and
will pay up a fine, refund fees
paid and change their marketing program away from the "no late
fees" claim. It still seems like Blockbuster had a valid claim here.
A late fee is a "punishment" fee for returning a product late.
Blockbuster wasn't punishing customers, but simply assuming that they
were buying the video in question. In other words, people were
getting something in return for those fees -- not just randomly
charged.
