Here comes the science-speak:
Existing volatile memory (i.e. RAM) is stored in capacitors that hold
electrons in two distinct states and must be recharged several
thousand times per second, because the electrons tend to leak out.
Researchers at Philips Research Laboratories in the Netherlands have
developed a new method for high-capacity, static (non-volatile) RAM
that wouldn't require a constant refresh. Applying pulses of
electricity in varying degrees to a material known as antimony
telluride can cause its atoms to either line up or sink back into
chaos. Switching between an amorphous and crystalline state, a
computer can differentiate between the two because of the crystalline
state's significantly lower electrical resistance. We briefly explain
the advantages over current flash memory after the jump.

05/14/2004 04:59 AMLast year I gave you my impressions of then start-up Imprivata's
attempt at a single sign-on appliance called OneSign (see link below).
While I wasn't keen on some of the company's marketing literature, the
device itself did show promise. Now that Version 2.0 is shipping, that
promise is being delivered upon.

Mark Frauenfelder:
Becky sez:
"Plumbing the depths, in terms of profiting from 9/11's victims: these
people are selling coins made with silver they say they got from
Ground Zero. I guess they couldn't get their hands on any human
remains to use."
The silver used in each gleaming dollar coin is from
Ground Zero! You see, when the Twin Towers fell on September 11, 2001,
a bank vault full of .999 Pure Silver bars was buried under hundreds
of tons of debris. After months of salvage work, many of the bars were
found. Now, the same silver that was reclaimed from the destruction
has been used to create the magnificent 2004 “Freedom
Tower” Silver Dollar.
On its website, National Collector's Mint asks: "How many would you
like to order today?" Here's the company's email address so you can answer
that question.

UPDATE: Here's a link to a Daily Show segment about this coin. (Thanks,
Dan!)

A Leaf by Bronislaw Maj
A Leaf by Bronislaw Maj
12/26/2004 07:03 PMRead on the subway this morning:
A leaf, one of the last, parts from a maple branch:
it is spinning in the transparent air of October, falls
on a
heap of others, stops, fades. No one
admired its entrancing
struggle with the wind,
followed its flight, no one will
distinguish it now
as it lies among the other leaves, no one saw
what I did. I am
the only one.
I might need more poetry in my life.

LEAF (Linux Embedded Appliance Firewall) is an easy-to-use embedded
Linux
system that is meant for creating network appliances for use in small
office,
home office, and home automation environments. Although it can be used
in other
ways, it is primarily used as a gateway/router/firewall for Internet
leaf
sites.
Changes:
Updated to Linux kernel version 2.4.29. A lot of (base) packageshave
been updated. Every package is solely built and packaged the first
time with the buildtool environment (also available in the CVS
repository).
