The contenders are robots fighting in a special kickboxing match that's held twice a year in Japan, a leading nation in the robotics world.

Why most open source projects fail

Why most open source projects fail 06/22/2004 06:01 AM

Some people have questioned my motives when I make the following statement. Commercially supported software products normally out development of open-source projects. There are several reasons for my saying this and I will lay them out.

1. Dedicated Team of Paid Programmers lead by a lead developers.
2. Product vision for development.
3. Financially driven to make sure product succeeds.

The list goes on. Some of you are starch advocates of open-source and I support open source but I have gotten burned more than once on open source projects. Typically I have found that software projects that start as open source have a higher success rate than those products that start out as commercial and move later to open source.

I have found that Far too many Open Source projects have died because while the wonderful buzzwords "free and open" get used, the amount of talent actually working on many projects ends up being less than zero. I think most people have huge expectations in expecting Open Source to be a panacea for all software packages. Sadly usually it isn't.

Effective PR for open source projects

Effective PR for open source projects 04/22/2004 10:47 AM
This Saturday we're holding an IRC discussion with OSDN editor in chief Robin 'Roblimo' Miller about how to get the media spotlight to shine on your project. Robin recently wrote a NewsForge article article headlined Getting good PR for your open source project, and he's the author of The Online Rules of Successful Companies, so he's as strong an expert in this area as you're likely to find. The (moderated) chat will be at 2000 UTC (4 p.m. EDT, 1 p.m. PDT) on IRC server events.oftc.net, #promo, Saturday, April 24, 2004.

PHPTriad Postmortem

I built this thing because I wanted it. I shared it with the world because I felt it was right. I'm shutting it down because I'm sick of it and no longer enjoy it.

If the non-tangible benefits were still there, I might still be running the project, in spite of no cashflow. After all, I understood free software before starting it and never really expected to build a successful business off of it. I did, however, kind of hope I might at least cover server costs. That didn't happen. -- J Wynia

"tri" I sympathize with Mr Wynia. Without some sort of external need (eg. to support my company's PHP products) and some personal motivation, maintaining an Open Source project like PHPTriad or ADOdb for years and years is hard work - John.

Open Source Receives Royalties Boost: This is an awfully cool thing. Most of Packt's books are on open-source stuff, and a lot of them are on projects for which no other books have been written. Good to see them support the projects which provide them with subjects for their books.

[...] Packt Publishing is paying royalties from each book they sell to the open source project it is written on.

The company has published on, and subsequently given to, a number of open source projects including eZ publish, Plone and phpMyAdmin. Marc Delisle from the phpMyAdmin project explains that amongst other things their support has "helped the team to be present at various conferences in order to promote phpMyAdmin."

Nicely done, chaps. Bravo.

05/24/2004 11:37 PM
eWeek: CA Moves with New Open-Source Licensing for Content, Database Projects. This article has some dangerous flaws. Proprietary/open source dual-licensing can be done with the GPL; just look at MySQL. (I see the Plone Foundation themselves are fighting this bad reporting.) Also, Apache is not dual-licensed and IBM could have used it just as easily if it wasn't owned by the ASF, because the Apache License is so permissive. (Also, companies that create gratuitous new open source licenses are not on the Cluetrain, but at least it's not dangerous.)
