Surprise!
01/18/2004 03:43 AMJust got back from seeing
Master and Commander. The
theatre was jam-packed; mind you it was Saturday night, but still, the
movie’s been out for ages. I’m pleased it’s doing well because
it’s very good indeed. Herewith a few notes on the movie, and more
on the books behind it; if there are any book-lovers reading this who
haven’t yet discovered Patrick O’Brian, do yourself a
big
favor and read on. Plus I close with the obligatory geek-interest
side-notes...

a remarkable story from the BlogOn conference,
from which I quote: “Probably 99 times out of 100 when he asks that
question all the hands go up, right? Well first there was a pause and
then a giggle and then a whoop of laughter as the audience looked
around and realized that NO ONE had raised a hand.” Don’t miss it.

A surprise move
07/12/2004 09:01 AMIt's as if I'm living two lives now. One is here, where I do the same
things that I've done before. I go to work, I ride, I code, I read, I
meet friends, I watch TV. I sleep alone.
The other life happens online or over the weekends. I - no:
"we" - do completely different things than in my other life.
It's as if I'm a part of her life; but she's not of mine. We meet
her friends, live in her place, take care of her mice, sit on her
toilet seat. It's fun, and wonderful, and exciting - don't get me
wrong - but still. Our lives are still separate, yet already
intertwined in some complex and fragile web of coincidence, passion,
caring, and laughter.
Tonight, she's coming over for a few days, and my two lives will
finally meet. I hope they both survive. I really, really do.
Because I no longer know which one I would choose, if I had to.
Make a wish - make a move
Make up your mind - you can choose
When you're up - when you're down
When you need a laugh come around
--Shania Twain: Come On Over

it’s supposed to. Also, you seldom expect
“improvements” to improve matters. Such is not the case

2003 Junk E-mail Filter Update: KB835235, made a noticable difference
in how well Outlook picks out spam. Someone has been doing their

Gmail feature surprise
Gmail feature surprise
04/22/2004 01:28 PMLast night I left my desktop PC's browser open to my gmail account
and took my laptop to the library to do some writing. I read some new
mail on the powerbook, responded to a few things, then came home and
slept. Today I came back to my desk to see gmail running, with all the
messages I had read and responded to shown as read and responded to.
Since gmail just refreshes the page in your browser every so often,
if you read your mail at one location, other locations are updated
automatically. This is something POP3 mail rarely gets right and why I
used to use IMAP when I would check mail from multiple machines. It's
nice to see a web app get this key feature right from the get-go. If
you read email at work and at home, gmail will work perfectly fine,
even if you leave your mail windows open in both places.
