Honhai CT-PMP58A Portable Media Player
Plays VOBs
07/28/2004 07:52 AM
Although the picture on the
Honhai CT-PMP58A portable media player product page looks like it was
done in MSPaint, the 5.7-inch unit does have one interesting feature
(presuming it's a real product): the ability to play VOB files, the
raw format in which video is stored on DVDs. That means that instead
of transcoding DVDs into different, smaller formats to play on the
PMP, you could instead just drop the whole DVD onto the internal 30GB
hard drive. Granted, you'd only be able to get three or four on there
before the drive filled up, but you'd also get all the extended
features and whatnot that often gets sheared off when ripping a DVD to
another format.
Somehow I have a feeling they didn't pay any licensing fees to
Warner Bros. for that Harry Potter image, either. (Thanks,
Irving!)

Want to see what
a Microsoft Portable Media Player looks like without its hard, candy
shell? Prepare yourself, because it's pretty amazing. It looks like a
computer. I know! Crazy. Who would have thought electronics had
hard drives and circuit boards and chips instead of delicious, nougaty
cremes? My worldview: rocked.

Option-Shift K shirts currently available through
CafePress have been very well received. But the most common
question we get asked (aside from
What does
it mean? ) is why don't we make them on black shirts?
Well, we have finally decided it's time to get these bad boys printed
properly and on the universally accepted uniform of the geek: the
black T-shirt.

Samsung's booth in particular was full of yummy things, like this

LG MF-SE 430, Portable Player/Subwoofer

LG's MF-SE
430 just barely crossed the line between "something to report on" and
"another boring MP3 player," but all is well that ends well. The
system consists of two speakers and a subwoofer, where you can
directly insert the MP3 player itself. This is pretty good convergence
if you ask me, but I'm really too open-minded about stuff like this.
Also, judging by the pics, the speakers are flat panel types. Price
and essentially anything else is unknown, but it's not like something
like this will ever exit LG's homeland.

Yet Another Portable Video Player:
Talitor PV-330
07/06/2004 03:09 PM
It won't win any prizes for
being ugly -- oh wait, yes it will; congratulations! -- but here's
another portable video player, this time from the UK: the Talitor
PV-330. It's got the usual stuff, 40GB hard drive and a 3.5-inch LCD
with a fairly low quality screen (looks like 480 x 234, although it
can't even decode at that resolution). In fact, after factoring in the
£325 purchase price I can't think of much to recommend this
thing at all, unless you've resigned yourself to stepping into the
portable video future in the most wretched way possible. (Thanks,
Joe!)

Looking for a good portable DVD player

Looking for a good portable DVD player
for travel
05/11/2004 02:07 AMWell, I'll be heading to Japan for a few weeks later in the month
(I'm setting up some business meetings from May 26-29) and I'm looking
for a good, relatively inexpensive portable DVD player for the trip.
I'm really not an expert at this stuff, but I figured that some of you
folks out there would be experts and could give me some
recommendations on DVD players and reputable merchants. Here's my
requirements:
1) Must be portable and have decent battery life (or an extra
battery)
2) Must have a built-in screen
3) Must have a headphone jack
4) Should have speakers
5) Should be able to play multiregion DVDs (stuff I buy in Japan) as
well as US DVDs
6) Should be able to plug it into a regular TV (NTSC) and display DVDs
that way
I'd like to spend less that $500 on it, hopefully less than $300.
Would totally appreciate some suggestions from you gadget mavens out
there. I promise to post my review of the unit I purchase!

Another day, another portable media player. This
mPack P800 is of hearty, Taiwanese stock, with a heavy-lifting video
compressor that will save video at resolutions even higher than its
native 320 by 240 pixel screen. That's handy for playing back the
videos on a better quality screen, after either copying them off the
device or playing them via its video out. It supports a variety of
formats (including OGG Vorbis and Xvid) and comes in 40GB or 80GB
models. If the screen isn't a total travesty, it'll be a
contender—if it makes it stateside.
