12-in-1 USB 2.0 Card Reader / Writer
05/26/2004 07:38 PM?I have no idea how long it will be before the next card format
appears that requires its own reader. But in the meantime, this gadget
is going straight into my gear bag. I have not yet seen another that
could accept so many card formats and which has such an appealing
design. Maybe one of these days I will get the clear PDA to match.?

06/29/2004 08:49 AM
It's
sad that these days, almost anything that refers to itself as a 'spy
something' is probably pretty pedestrian when it's all said and done.
So while this "SPY DISK with card reader" isn't amazing, it is
surprisingly enough that it actually does something cool at all.
Available with internal memory sizes of 128MB or 256MB, the cap-end
also functions as an SD/MMC card reader. You can't copy
directly from the SD cards to the internal memory -- you'll have to
copy to your PC, then back -- but it's a pretty great idea in general,
even if it doesn't shoot lasers or eject poison gas. And hey, it's USB
2.0! Maybe the cheap gear is finally starting to see the light of fast
transfer rates.

Sony Hi-MD Memory Card Reader
Sony Hi-MD Memory Card Reader
08/10/2004 09:26 PM
Sony makes an interesting
attempt at pushing their new Hi-MD format (for "High Capacity
MiniDisc"), which for those of you that don't know, has a 1 gigabyte
capacity. It's called the "MCMD-R1," and for good reason. What reason
that is, I do not know. The aptly named device, or whatever, attaches
to a Hi-MD recorder via a USB cable. Pushing the "copy" button, images
will be copied from a memory card to the Hi-MD disc. An interesting
idea, but I personally find the numerous drawbacks to be...drawbacky.
First of all, it apparently only does images. You can't connect even
it to a PC's USB port - this makes the sub $80 device quite expensive.
Also, the reader does support nearly every media under the sun, but it
can only read from one card at a time.
If I were Sony, I'd instead make this into a CD drive. You could
press the button, and it would copy the disc's contents onto a Hi-MD.
But this is on the very fringes of legality as we know it. Oh
well.

interface. Cardiris works with Address Book, Microsoft Entourage, Now
Contact and can also export contact information to iPods, PDAs or

Addonics 25 Function Card Reader/DVD

Addonics 25 Function Card Reader/DVD
Burner
07/29/2004 01:10 PMFor a second I was excited
about Addonics' new "MFR" device (Multifunction Recorder), a new
25-function device (so they say; I didn't count) that can read 11
different types of flash media cards and can record onto six different
types of optical media (DVDs and CDs, that is). But while copying
flash memory to DVD is a neat trick, and so is projecting it from the
unit to a DVD or monitor, for $320 I really, really wanted this to
have a hard drive in it, even if it were just a little one. Why? I
don't know, I just do; mainly for using as a buffer to mix-and-match
data pre-burn. That being said, for certain niche applications (field
photographers, etc.) the MFR could be really handy. I wonder if you
can copy from multiple cards onto a single disk at once?
If you don't need DVD burning, there's a CD-R version for about $70
less.

Floppy Drive

Despite what you might
expect, I think this is great: a USB external floppy drive that
doubles a 7-in-1 media card reader from I/O Magic. I figure, though,
that for the few people that actually still need a stinky old format
like 3.5" should have to pay the extra $70 for it so the rest of us
can leave them our of our PCs for good. I have a floppy drive in this
box, but it's not even hooked up. I just leave it there to remind me I
am enjoying a floppyless life.

How to Transform Your Cell Into A
Magnetic Card Reader
04/14/2005 01:25 PM
Some people are, in all
sincerity, too smart for their own good. Take this fellow, who MAKE
reports on:
Exploring my new Siemens MC 60 mobile, I
discovered an interesting feature. It has the ability to record small
pieces of sound with its integrated microphone and store them as WAV
files, so that you can use them later as personalized ring tones,
etc...The recording feature made me think that I might use the mobile
as a magnetic stripe reader, just like I did with computers with
soundcards. After some tests I had successful results, so here is the
process in case you are interested in doing the same.
Impressive.
