Steam Turbines
06/17/2005 07:16 PMMacro Sensors (www.macrosensors.com), an American Sensor Technologies
(AST) company specializing in the manufacture of LVDT-based linear and
rotary sensors, gaging probes, support electronics and related
instrumentation, has been named a GE SQE- (Supplier Quality
Engineering) approved vendor for LVRT (Linear Variable Reluctance
Transformer) position sensors used on General Electric’s steam
turbines. The LVRTs are implemented for position measurement on
governor valves, throttle valves, reheat/stop valves, interceptor
valves, and many other control valves. [PRWEB Jun 15, 2005]

David Pescovitz:
My latest article for TheFeature is about the Urban Pollution Project,
a big research effort in the UK that uses bike-mounted carbon monoxide
sensors and bluejacking to rate the air we breathe.
"Mobile sensors that are geographically tracked could...
give a broad and dense picture of how pollution affects urban spaces
and the people within them," says Urban Pollution investigator Anthony
Steed, a computer science researcher at the University College London.
"If you have several hundred or thousand sensors, you could give them
to commuters and they'd make a map of the city's
pollution."

Are Sensors the key to Grand Challenge?
05/11/2004 12:12 PMDavid
Duke of RobotCorps has
written a new Robotics
Trends article that proposes the idea that the
DARPA Grand Challenge
is less about robots than about sensor technology. David offers an
overview of the types of sensors used by robots entered in this year's
DARPA contest and suggests possible sensor technology that we may see
in
the next contest such as SEEGRID's vision technology.

Internet information field monitoring system, which places a special
module-sensor on the side of the Web-Server to detect changes in
information resources and subsequently reindexes only the resources
signalized by the corresponding sensor. Concise results of simulation
research and an implemenation attempt of the given "sensors" concept
are provided.

Mark Frauenfelder:
Here's an article I wrote for
TheFeature about plans to put
magnetic sensors in mobile phones as navigation aids.
The most exciting mobile application for magnetic sensors
is the capability to map an online "Yellow Pages" on top of the real
world, allowing users to point their phones in the direction of a
building or other public area and get information about it. For
example, say you're driving down the street and see a bookstore you'd
like to visit later. You could simply point your phone at the store
and press a button on your phone, sending the GPS coordinates and
direction information to a service that returns the operating hours
and additional information about the store, along with a coupon for
10% off your purchase. If you point it at a restaurant, you could get
the Zagat rating, the menu and the opportunity to make a
reservation.

John Hopkins University
is showing off their newest touch sensor for robots. Its flexible and
wand-like antenna consists of six strain gauges that have been molded
in urethane, giving it an accuracy of 1-1.5cm and allowing it to
closely follow a wall. They also intend to install an actuator,
allowing the antenna to sweep, making it more like their initial
inspiration: the cockroach. At least somewhat more advanced than my
Lego Mindstorms bulldozer's edge-sensor, the urethane-shelled sensors
could easily find their way into forthcoming robots that need the
ability to feel out their surroundings.
