Fighting Conventional Wisdom

Fighting Conventional Wisdom 08/17/2004 11:05 AM
Why 2004 won't be like 1984. A phenomenal read detailing why Apple's reluctance to open up iPod is not the harbinger of doom that so many pundits claim it is. The horror! Apple may have learned from its mistakes with Macintosh 20 years ago and guess what? Macintosh's failure had little to do with licensing. That is, if you agree with the analysis over at daringfireball.net. This article points out why the media pundits are wrong about Apple's reluctance to open up iPod and shows why their position today is entirely different, and stronger, than 20 years ago. Let the flame wars begin!

Democracy triumphs over conventional
wisdom in India?

Democracy triumphs over conventional
wisdom in India?
05/13/2004 03:13 PM
'In the event, it was a near-unanimous verdict for the politics of inclusiveness - economic, social and cultural - and against the rhetoric of divisiveness and xenophobia.' The 'stunning' victory of Sonia Gandhi's Congress (I) party in the world's largest democracy may force us to reconsider some of our preconceptions about India. To the headline writers in Britain and the US, it's the place that's 'stealing' jobs from the West (itself a simplification); to most Indian voters, though, the BJP's economic miracle doesn't extend beyond the major cities, serving to a ccentuate rather than alleviate the poverty gap. The verdict on the ground? That this is a vote against the limited capacity of globalisation to bring real change to developing economies. Some might accuse Indian voters of cutting off their noses to spite their faces, but for hundreds of millions of them, the BJP's promise of a 'Shining India' spoke of an entirely different world.

Internet Talk Radio continues make it’s mark on the world. Recently I discovered a show called Tech Nation hosted by Moira A. Gunn, Ph.D. It sounds like a great show to check out when you find yourself browsing the internet early in the morning. Unfortunately, it only says that it is on at “6am” and they do not specify which time zone they are talking about. Another disappointment that became apparent was that they do…

To get truly personalized online radio, listeners have to spend time ranking hundreds or thousands of songs. Last.fm eliminates that tedium with a small software plug-in, which builds accurate profiles based on songs on a user's hard drive. By Daniel Terdiman.

BBC Internet Radio Player
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/

The BBC re-launches its Internet Radio Player to make almost every BBC Radio programme available live and on-demand for seven days after broadcast, creating a massive, ever-changing library of music, talk shows, dramas and documentaries. Latest figures show more than 10 million hours of BBC radio is consumed online per month and, from 25 January, the new Radio Player will offer 500 extra hours of programming and offer a range of new features. The re-launch puts audiences in control of their listening, allowing them to listen at convenient times, control their schedules and fast-forward through programmes while exposing them to new shows - and perhaps whole networks - they otherwise wouldn't come across. The new Player provides all the programmes and benefits of the current model - which makes many of the BBC's radio programmes available online - but includes over 80 more programmes, making virtually all of the BBC's national radio output available on-demand via the Internet. This has been added to Reference Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Last few artists I've heard: Marvin Gaye, Barrington Levy, Roland Kirk, King Kooba, Black Star and on and on and on. Yeah, just another free online radio station, but I know some of you will appreciate it a lot.
