The reinvention of Progeny: How one FOSS
company survived the dot-com crash
03/29/2005 05:02 AMIn June 2001, Progeny Linux Systems was in crisis. Looking around,
co-founder and CEO Ian Murdock realized that the company needed
fundamental changes to survive. Four years later, Progeny is back up
to its former staffing levels and showing modest profits. It is also
one of the few Free/Open Source Software (FOSS)-based companies from
that era to survive. Murdock's assessment of where the company went
wrong and his story of how it reinvented itself offer some practical
suggestions for other start-ups, especially FOSS-based ones. Progeny
Linux Systems was founded in early 2001 with modest funding from the
Linux Capital Group, a short-lived venture in which Bruce Perens was
co-founder and president. By May, Progeny was hiring rapidly and
beginning develop Linux NOW (Network of Workstations), an updated
version of Sprite, a research operating system developed at the
University of California-Berkeley that provided a single system image
to a cluster of work stations.

Stock Madness 2005: Apple vs. Microsoft
Stock Madness 2005: Apple vs. Microsoft
03/19/2005 02:51 AMThe selection committee, it is apparent, has a flair for the dramatic.
They knew that an Apple versus Microsoft tilt would be great
television. Heck, if I weren't part of it, I'd tune in.
Let's dispense with the elephant in the room: If we are at Round 3 in
the Apple/Microsoft tilt, you would have to be hopelessly partisan not
to recognize that Microsoft absolutely slaughtered Apple in the first,
with Apple making excellent tactical maneuvers in the second so that
the biggest question is no longer whether Microsoft will destroy it.
The difference between the second round and the first was that Apple
chose to quit punching itself.
Apple is the prospector, the trailblazer, and yes, perhaps even a Rule
Breaker. Microsoft is the Borg. Apple's technology tends to work
extremely well and is intuitive. Microsoft's works with everything,
eventually. Microsoft will never, ever, ever come up with a piece of
functional engineering as breathtakingly beautiful as the iMac. Still,
Apple lost the operating system war. So it went elsewhere.
