Sf stories written to submitted images 07/10/2004 06:12 AM

Chris sez, "SciFiMage, a new section in Ultraverse, takes a unique approach story-telling. Instead of the editor -- that's me -- writing a story and then soliciting an artist to illustrate it, I take a submitted image and write a story about it. Anyone may submit an image -- one of their own, or someone else's." Link (Thanks, Chris!)

If All Stories Were Written Like Science Fiction Stories. "Roger and Ann needed to meet Sergey in San Francisco. 'Should we take a train, or a steamship, or a plane?' asked Ann. 'Trains are too slow, and the trip by steamship around South America would take months,' replied Roger. 'We’ll take a plane.'"

802.11n standard submitted for approval 08/15/2004 12:42 AM
A new Wi-Fi standard that promises faster WLANS is one step closer to becoming reality:
The WWiSE (worldwide spectrum efficiency) group said it has developed technology for review by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) 802.11n task group, which is overseeing a next-generation Wi-Fi standard capable of sustaining data throughput exceeding 100Mbps.

The proposal is based on MIMO-OFDM (multiple input, multiple output-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) technology, which achieves higher speeds by employing two antennas at each end of the signal (one for transmitting, one for receiving) instead of one at each terminus.

A week later, I have an excellent list of the errata for the book, and I've sent it off to my editor. Many thanks to all of you who generously gave of your time and detail-attentiveness for this effort -- I'm overwhelmed. Link

06/24/2004 07:42 PM
Microsoft Corp., author of the Microsoft® Caller ID for E-mail proposal, and Meng Weng Wong, co-founder and CTO of Pobox.com and author of the Sender Policy Framework (SPF), have announced today that they have successfully converged the two proposals into one specification named Sender ID and submitted to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for consideration as an industrywide standard for e-mail authentication as part of the IETF's efforts to define effective industry Internet e-mail standards to address the problem of spam. Sender ID is designed to help verify the source of e-mail to help eliminate domain spoofing and provide greater protection against phishing schemes. By providing a unified specification, Microsoft and Wong hope to simplify industry adoption of effective e-mail authentication technology, thereby helping more swiftly provide greater spam protection to e-mail users worldwide.

One of the things I get asked is "where are the major consumer apps written with .NET?" Here's one that's very cool: Constant Time's Electronic Shoebox. It organzies and lets you edit your digital photos. President James Park tells me "I shudder to think how long it would have taken us to write it in C++."

I just got it (it costs $29) and I'll be testing it out and reporting on it soon.

Book Written In Txt

Book Written In Txt 01/28/2004 03:38 PM
Last year there were a few stories about teacher s freaking out when their students were handing in papers written in "txt" shorthand. I imagine those same teachers won't be all that pleased to find out that someone has now come out with an entire book written in texting slang. The book (written in French SMS slang) is aimed at kids to try to get them to stop smoking - but I wonder if it will be used to get them to show their teachers a "legitimate" use of txt slang. Of course, my guess is that any book written by an adult, trying to use the shorthand that kids use and trying to get them not to smoke is only going to get mocked. However, not being a kid, not knowing French and not knowing "txt" speak, I'm not really in a position to judge the quality of the book. Still, if we thought English teachers were sticklers for students not using texting shorthand, I can't imagine how angry the French language keepers are going to be. The French, of course, are notorious for trying to micromanage their language to keep impurities out. These are the same folks who had to come up with their own French words for internet related terms, because they couldn't have their language pollute d by English.

Have We Written Off Cold Fusion Too
Soon?
04/23/2004 01:32 PM
Fusion research is generally considered something of a pseudo-science in some circles as almost every major announcement in the field is later disproven or made highly questionable when the results weren't reproducible. However, some researchers won't give up, and some are saying that, while it may still be early, some of the experiments are showing reproducible results, suggesting that there may actually be something to the theories. After so many people have been burned by cold fusion claims, it makes sense to remain skeptical for now, but maybe the science isn't as pseudo as some believed.

A Hand-Written Letter

A Hand-Written Letter 12/11/2003 04:51 PM
In today's post arrived a shiny copper-coloured envelope of the sort I'm always seeing in stationary shop windows and admiring in a "email's not that pretty" kind of way. I've often wondered about the kind of person who might keep up the art of letter-writing, something you just don't come across in my fields of work and play. The lettering on the envelope was done with a careful hand in neat black block letters. About the only writing I'm caught doing is Graffiti on glass, where handwriting counts only insofar as conveyance of digitizable information. Inside was a friendly hand-written note on pleasingly rhomboid paper. At the bottom, an honest-to-goodness signature. The contents of the note, a simple thank-you.

I propped the envelope up on my desk--I'm not known for keeping paper about for a second longer than is absolutely necessary, books aside--and noticed my eye returning to it throughout the day.

Now I know I tend to wax poetic about some of the simplest things, but it's in the unremarkable details that you often find the best parts of your day.

Thank you for your lovely letter.
