MP3 Music Webl0gs 08/31/2004 05:56 AM

I have been running the wget script we wrote about several months ago and I am amazed at the number of songs we are pulling down. Many are from artist I have never heard. Some are from cover bans and their re-makes of popular music along with music that has been ripped from a copyrighted CD. Thus far though it has been a interesting experiment in checking out all the new tunes. I am sure my Internet provider is happy with me as the run today pulled 1.6 gigs of music simply amazing.

Here are the sites I poll and if you have any other MP3 weblogs that you know about drop me a line.

MTV to introduce download program

MTV to introduce download program 04/07/2005 10:40 AM
MTV Networks plans to start a music downloading service this year that will offer subscription or single purchases through MTV.com. MTV Networks Group President Van Toffler said at a press conference in New York on Wednesday that the service won't use the MTV name. He declined to comment on the name or start date. Separately, MTV.com will unveil a new site called MTV Overdrive on April 25 that will feature music videos, movie clips, segments from MTV News and excerpts from MTV shows such as "Punk'd." MTV Overdrive is a means for its parent company, New York-based Viacom, "to capture new money going into new media," Toffler said. Users will see 15-second commercials for products interspersed throughout the video clips without the option to skip commercials.

High school teachers: Handhelds, laptops improved grades: This is a very cool thing in a city about 90 miles from Sioux Falls. Yankton is not a big city (pop. 13,500), but they have a beautiful new high school and are evidently doing good things with their tech budget.

Two pilot programs that gave hand-held computers and laptops to students at Yankton High School resulted in higher grades, teachers at the school say. [...]

The school gave 75 randomly selected students and four teachers handheld computers called M130s last October. In addition, school officials used grant money to purchase 30 laptop computers, which were given to 25 students and four teachers.

Good for them. South Dakota rules.

Getting Kids To Program Old School Video
Games
04/06/2005 06:48 AM
It seems that every recent story about Atari has been about their attempts (in their modern form -- quite different from the original Atari) to make a killing on the nostalgia market, offering up classic games from years back to today's adults -- either on computers or (increasingly) on mobile phones. However, it appears that many feel the basic concepts of old Atari videogames are still valuable for game designers to learn -- resulting in a competition to design new games for the Atari 2600. Of course, there's one twist: the games needed to be created in 24 hours. While the story is amusing to read, what it really does is remind people that, despite all the amazing graphics found in today's game, a game is still about gameplay at its core -- which many of today's game designers seem to forget.

Plainview Pre-School Launches First
Wireless Laptop Computer Technology
Program for Preschoolers
12/22/2004 01:33 AM
Looking for the perfect Christmas gift for that hard to please 3 or 4 year old? Wireless laptops are at the top of the list for some 100 children at Louisville’s Plainview Pre-school. This fall, students began using wireless laptops in one of the country’s first wireless computer labs just for preschoolers! It is all part of the ground breaking educational approaches at Plainview Pre-School designed to boost preschooler’s brainpower and future college readiness at a cost that won’t turn parents into scrooges. Students receive weekly instruction in the school’s new wireless computer lab plus classroom visits with an assortment of technological equipment including laptops, digital cameras, recording devices, and listening centers. According to the school officials, this gives children a chance to use technology for real problem solving rather than just for entertainment and since appropriate stimuli such as engaging hands-on activities with computers enhances early brain development, the school believes laptops are the perfect choice for a preschooler’s small hand size. The cost for the program is included in the school's unique tuition structure which school officials says offers a high quality program and at a cost well below what many other preschool programs charge. Legal Free Music On The Way

Legal Free Music On The Way 12/22/2003 04:08 PM
Whether they understand the economics of it or not, it appears that things are continuing to move forward pretty much as we expected in the music business. Companies are realizing that music is a promotional good, and not necessarily something that should be sold on its own. With that in mind, many big brand companies are looking to give away lots of legal free music in the coming year. Of course, the recording industry still hasn't figured this out completely, and will still stick to its guns and charge $0.67/track - which will be paid for by the big brands giving away the music. Sooner or later, though, pricing pressure should show up enough to force the industry to lower their own prices as well, no matter how much they complain.

Plenty Of Legal Downloadable Music Now 05/27/2004 12:11 PM
For a totally arbitrary, but supposedly "symbolic" milestone, the global music industry is celebrating that there are now over 100 legal music services available. Don't ask what kind of sites make it to the list, that's not the important part. The important part is that now music lovers have more music formats to choose from than ever. Woo hoo! So instead of making it easier for people to download music in a simple, transferable format, we now have a bunch of different formats that we have to track down from over 100 sources. Sounds like progress to me.

AllOfMP3 Doubles Rates 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

allof3c.jpg imageAllOfMP3, why hast thou forsaken me? These are the plaintive words of a cheapskate who has just learned that his favorite Russian music download service is about to double its rate for music downloads from $0.01 to $0.02 a MB. It's still a fantastic deal—knowing that I'm forcing the starving children of musicians to eat a sour gruel made from the remnants of overstock Amy Grant guitar tab is just a bonus—but it's also twice as expensive, which makes my eye patch droop a little. The company is claiming "new licensing conditions" are forcing their hand. Which licensing agency would that be and how much of the money will they be getting? It's enough to make a miser cry (if I could afford the salt).

MySpace????

MySpace???? 04/24/2004 03:25 AM

MySpace: The Show. Social networking is definitely going mainstream. I see in Variety that a reality show is being developed based on people meeting through social networking service MySpace. [Note: the article led me to sign up for MySpace, and I will review... [Get Real]

I'd be interested in what Stowe thinks about MySpace.  I call it the "kitchen sink" of social networking.  I'm amazed at just how many features and capabilities it has.  For what it seems to lack in heart, soul and passion - it makes up with Rankings, Blogs and Games.  They even have classifieds!  And Yahoo ads all over the place!

But there's something about that place - which (BTW) they claim they have more traffic than Friendster right now.

MySpace - is #1

MySpace - is #1 03/06/2004 01:49 AM

According to a PR Newswire this morning Nielsen NetRatings confirms “Myspace.com‘s market leadership in Social Networking category”:

LOS ANGELES, March 1 /PRNewswire/ — MySpace.com, formally launched just over one month ago, today announces it is the number one ranked social networking site in terms of page views, according to Nielsen NetRatings, the leading online measurement tool.
“The latest Nielsen statistics validate what our users have been telling us for months,” said Chris DeWolfe, co-founder and President of MySpace.com. “By allowing our users to dictate the features they want, we’ve been able to develop an offering that keeps them coming back.”
MySpace.com has garnered an ardent and loyal fan base very quickly thanks to the technological superiority of its offering. MySpace.com is the only site of its kind to integrate blogs, instant messaging, classified listings, voting, groups, user forums, music and other user-created content. MySpace.com has also taken an active role in sponsoring music shows, parties and other events for its online users to socialize offline.
“To become the leader in the social networking space in just five months is an accomplishment we’re thrilled about, but we see it as only the beginning,” commented Tom Anderson, co-founder of MySpace.com. In addition to its technological advantages, MySpace.com allows a level of flexibility that is unmatched in the online social networking world. Users are allowed to create personalized web page profiles, which they can then use to link up and communicate with others of similar hobbies and interests. As the site is entirely advertiser-supported, use of the site is free.

[The Social Software Weblog]

This exposes what we've all known all along - that nobody goes to Friendster anymore.  And that it's lack of funtionality and features - makes it a joke.

Now I'm not sure if its MySpace's features, or people themselves - but they sure look like they're having fun over there.
