The Cassini-Huygens probe is approaching Saturn, and is nearly at the
end of its extremely long journey. It is already taking better
photographs than anything we've seen before, and much is expected from
both the orbiter and the Titan probe.
This picture is a simulation of what we might see, rendered with the
latest technology.
Err. Nope?
Would you believe that it's a part of a scale Solar System model here
in Helsinki, then? :)
(Ah, biking season. Which T9 wanted to call "bikini reason"
instead...)

Radio emissions recorded by the Cassini space probe hint that the
period varies significantly. It's the second major discovery by the
craft. Amit Asaravala reports from Pasadena, California.

years in space, the $3.2 billion Cassini
robotic
spacecraft is due
to arrive at Saturn soon. Nasa will fire up
the engines to prepare Cassini for an orbital insertion on July
1st.
As early as June 11th, Cassini will zip past one of Saturn's outer
moons
Phoebe. Later in the middle of January, the
Huygens probe will be
dropped to study the atmosphere of Titan; another of Saturn's moons.
Some activists hated Cassini for being nuclear but it appears not
to have harmed anything much. Of
course, Nasa is yet again searching and hoping for life on other
celestial bodies,
but at least we've been getting some great pictures of the Ringed
World.

"Standard orbit, aye, sir." Following a nail-biting
ring-plane crossing and 96-minute engine burn,
Cassini has
arrived, and is now in orbit around Saturn, 84 light-minutes away,
sending in
the first closeup pictures of the planet's rings. Also see

JPL's Cassini spacecraft is making it's final approach to
Saturn after seven years of whipping around our solar system. This
weekend the probe flew by an outer retrograde moon, Phoebe, and based
on stunning pictures unspooling
today it seems Phoebe is an ice rich
body, perhaps even a captured comet! If all goes well on July 1st
Cassini will enter into orbit around the ringed planet and provide
four years of exploration including the December landing of the 700
pound Huygens probe on Saturn's largest moon, Titan.
