Video Game Controllers That Let You Play
Dirty
11/06/2003 04:10 AMIt's pretty common in many (though certainly not all) sports for
players to go an extra step or two to push an opposing team when
they're down. Maybe hit an opponent a little extra hard or try to add
an extra shove when a ref isn't looking. It seems that some dirty
tricks come naturally in many sports - but not in video games until
now. There's a new video game controller out there that will let you
momentar
ily take control of your opponents controller. Sometimes it gives
you full control, and others it just messes up their controller
altogether. Consider it the video game version of an extra shove.

Dance, Voldo, Dance is a music video made by synchronizing the
movements of gladiators from the game Soul Calibur with a dance track,
so that they appear to be getting down with their nasty selves to the
music. It's quite good!

Streaming and On-Demand Video
12/17/2004 06:34 PMToday, we look at Digital Rights Management. A key question here is:
"Should you distribute your video online?" Movie industry figures who
have watched what happened in the music industry with Napster and its
successors are determined not to find themselves in a similar
predicament. When a movie studio invests $50 million in a film, it
wants to be quite sure the work is not going to be passed around Kazaa
and BitTorrent like so many MP3s. By Pearson Education, Inc. 1025

Review
Sony's HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Video
Review
06/16/2004 07:12 AM
Portable Media World (a spanking new sister site to our favorite
French gadget site, Akihabara News) has a review of the HMP-A1, the
second-generation video player from Sony. They're impressed by its
fit-and-finish, but it's clear from the review that Sony has crippled
the device, forcing the user to go through two different programs to
copy audio and video to the unit (and no ATRAC, hilariously), as well
as reencode most video before transferring it over (it supports MPEG
1/2/4 but not MPEG4 derivatives like DivX or XviD, apparently).
Battery life varies wildly depending on how much decoding the HMP-A1
must do, but even when gnawing on the relatively dense MPEG2 files it
manages around a 4 hour playback -- couple of movies worth, which is
decent. Left-handed users get an unfulfilled tease, as the HMP-A1
supports a screen pivot for lefty use, but doesn't switch the
directions of the controls, meaning scrolling down, for instance, will
cause the HMP-A1 to scroll up.
It looks nice, but considering the major market for these units --
we geeks who rip our own DVDs, record TV, and download video
(illegally) -- it's probably better to wait for one of the iRiver or
Archos players that don't do annoying things like hide the directories
on the hard drive.

If FlashMeeting 2 isn't the bee's
knees, then I don't know what is. The replay capability, shown on the
right, is actually described separately on the CNM Memo
page, but is part of the same technology family.
Other super-cool features, not yet widely available, include the
ability for me to 'quick-book' just-in-time meetings directly via a
chatbot, handily available on my Jabber buddy list... neato! One-line
command (indeed one-word command) does the trick, and then I've got a
URL I can broadcast to my buddies to join the meeting with one click:
no downloads, no installation, no setup, and way simpler than Breeze-y
stuff, though based on the same underlying technology.
Congrats to Jon Linney and Kevin Quick on Peter Scott's awesome
team!

New Kevin Sites dispatch from Iraq:
Dirty for Dirty
06/01/2004 02:09 PMNBC combat correspondent and
weblogger
Kevin Sites is in
Iraq today. He's just posted a new entry on his blog -- a series of
interviews with American soldiers.
[O]nce they finally do get home--they will still be faced with the
complex task of finding their way in a civilian society again. And
while they're eager to leave their weapons and Kevlar behind, the
violence they've experienced here will likely be with them in one way
or another, always.
Derek Ellyson says his memories have already hardened, fixed in his
mind. "You never forget the faces. I can describe to you every dead
person I've seen out here. What their faces looked like, the position
they were laying in." Sorokin agrees, "War brings a lot of ugly
things, you see a lot of ugly things you see other people dead and
sometimes when you see somebody dead you see the face of death--the
way the guy died. It could be an enemy it could be an ally it doesn't
matter."
Yet living with those images of death is part of the job--the same one
that requires them to pull the trigger. Before going to war soldiers
have always had to ask themselves if they'd be willing to die for
their cause. But there is a second part to that question which for
some, is more difficult to answer: would they kill for it? For most if
not all in the 3rd Platoon--the question is already moot.

12/03/2003 02:38 PM This Super Bowl halftime, make
it to the Lingere Bowl. American TV hits a new low by inventing
another sport along the lines of Foxy Boxing and Hot Oil Wrestling.
The gridiron action features
Team Dream vs.
Team Euphoria (featuring
washed-up former NFL players
as coaches) in full contact football
while wearing skimpy clothing.
Even weirder, but
there will be cheerleaders to
cheerlead the players that are already dolled up to look like
cheerleaders in some sort of subtle hot lesbian action. It's all
pay-per-view, but this "Girls Gone Football" seems more like a new low
than a step forward for
real women's sports.
