CMP Says It's Not Blocking Google
CMP Says It's Not Blocking Google
06/25/2004 11:54 AMCMP Techweb.com's editor in
chief, Fredric Paul, says the report I linked to yesterday is incorrect. He
writes:
Anyway, we saw that you picked up the
CyberJournalist piece on CMP blocking access to our stories from
Google News. I don't know where that came from, but it is wrong. We do
not and have never blocked access from Google or any other search
engine. That's easily testable, try it yourself.
We do, however, intercept links from certain competitors who reproduce
significant portions of our stories on their own pages -- sometimes
even stealing the first link-- before they finally post a link to our
original material. In most cases, the intercept we put up allows the
reader to then click to their intended destination. Other major
technology publishers, including IDG, do similar things.
We're not just old media, and we're not completely
clueless.

Saudi site blocking
09/14/2004 03:12 PMAt the Berkman Center this afternoon, the lunch-time topic was
countries that block access to particular sites. We heard about the
Berkman's study of Saudi Arabia's practices. Jonathan Zittrain helped
start the project when he realized that many people assume that if you
could overcome the economic obstacles to global access, everyone would
magically be on line. But even when the connection is there, countries
are imposing limitations on what can be accessed. The project checks
what's being filtered by the local ISPs. The study began in 2000 and
is being done in conjunction with U of Toronto and U...

Firefox to Strengthen Pop-up Blocking
04/05/2005 11:52 AMsay
goodbye (again) to pop-ups!: Here's why a lot of sites have
managed to get around Firefox's pop-up blocking lately.
A lot of people have been reporting a new breed of pop-ups
on the web. This increasing menace is rooted in the pop-up
capabilities of plug-ins like flash and Java. If you're seeing pop-ups
and pop-unders, you're probably visiting sites that have flash or
other plug-ins and those plug-ins are being exploited by advertisers
to abuse you with annoying pop-ups and pop-unders.
Mozilla is taking steps to strengthed pop-up blocking, which is
good news because I've seen it get a lot worse lately. Via Slashdot.

Yahoo blocking Trillian again!
06/24/2004 04:40 AMI Love Trillian and I
am not real Happy with Yahoo at this moment seems the idiots over
their are blocking those of us using Trillian as our IM client.
Who in their right mind wants 4-5 Instant Message clients sitting on
their taskbar especially when the can run one program and have them
all. It is a beautiful thing I don't get spam advertised and I used to
be able to login to all 4 of my IM accounts.
The solution is simple tell all of those that I chat with on Yahoo
to move to one of the remaining services that are not blocked. Yahoo
just doesn't get it do they, no wonder they continue to loose the
browser war and screw up every other half assed service they run. [ZDNet]

newsreaders are still of the early adopter sort who are used to
blocking ads with Firefox or fast-forwarding through commercials with
their TiVos, it seems likely that blocking advertising in RSS/Atom
files might soon become an issue. He goes on to post the responses

Is Hotmail Blocking Gmail Invitations?
06/09/2004 10:57 AM
This could just be an isolated incident,
but last night I got my first Gmail invites, so I sent one to my
girlfriend's Hotmail account and it bounced. So not only may
Hotmail be blocking the Gmail invitations (which, honestly, I doubt,
but it's just shady enough to question it), but I wasted an
invitation that I won't get back. Anyone else had this problem?
