Open source iFolder is here

Open source iFolder is here 07/10/2004 04:47 AM

With all the talk in the past few issues about backups and recovery of the directory, there's a bit of news I've neglected to pass on. At Brainshare back in March, Novell announced that it would release its iFolder product as open source. Well, now it's gone and done just that.

IBM Adopts Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a form of open-source development internally to create technology the company will sell commercially.

IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing and testing new technology.

Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company. These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research and Global Services, he said."

Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the so called open source development process have they built into the Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different definitions of the open source development process (via Ross Gardler).

One frustration too many: time for a rant. When a bug in Mozilla (keyboard focus is on the previously selected window) has remained unfixed for at least 18 to 24 months, when XFree86 mouse interaction with PS/2 or GPM remains hazardous and makes a system unusable and that bug has been fobbed off to the kernel developers and not dealt with for at least two years - when there are more examples like this that make using Open Source software a pain, what do you do?

Are you one of the few people with the time and money and expertise sufficient to delve into the source yourself to fix the problem?

Do we have it "too good" and these niggles are, by comparison to the rest of the world's computer users (Windows), absolute peanuts?

Open source cracks publishing wide open 06/17/2004 11:24 AM

Open source and visible source

Open source and visible source 06/08/2004 09:11 AM
Zope Corp.'s layered strategy of engagement with open source and visible-source communities is a compelling blend of the strengths of free and commercial software development. In two previous columns, Open source citizenship and Giving back to open source, I explored the tendency of enterprises to fork open source projects rather than join them. Pedhazur suggests that a commercial entity supporting both an open source base and a visible-source layered product can reduce the need to fork. By outsourcing code enhancements, the argument goes, an enterprise can enjoy single-throat-to-choke control without seceding from a project's community. It remains to be seen how broadly this model can apply, but in cases where it does, what's not to like? [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
In this two-minute clip, Zope Corp.'s Chairman Hadar Pedhazur describes the visible source model as a middle-ground option between the few large open source projects, whose direction an enterprise cannot easily influence, and the many smaller ones that enterprises can influence, but typically fork in order to do so. ...

Open Source UIs

Open Source UIs 03/06/2004 01:49 AM
Improving Open Source UI.

My response to Eric Raymond's rant on the poor quality of open source UI is: No Kidding, Sherlock.  It shouldn't surprise anyone that open source UI is crappy and I am surprised that it took Eric this long to notice the problem.  As to why, it's because:

  • open source developers have little interest nor incentive to do it right.
  • most software developers lack the knowledge and experience to design good UIs.
  • UI design is hard and insanely tedious, even for the professionals.

Frankly, I don't think it is realistic to expect open source developers to build good UIs.  Instead, open source software should be designed to make it easier for others to change or replace the UI without understanding the code underneath.  Let a thousand UIs bloom and may the best one win.  In other words, leverage evolution in pursuit of good UIs.

[Don Park's Daily Habit]

In 1999 - when Dave Winer developed XML-RPC - we were the first company to build a client side, browser based interface to it.  We did a 'broadband' version of Dave's 'Mail to the Future' service.

That mini-project proved that it was possible to de-couple the front-end UI from the backend.

Here's a screen from that interface.  We spent all of 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 - waiting for the world to catch up with us.  Now it looks like that time has come.

All I can say to Don Park is "you just wait - dude".  Wait till you meet Jim Collins.

Wireless Competes with Cable, DSL

Wireless Competes with Cable, DSL 01/05/2004 01:40 PM
A handful of small companies are delivering wireless broadband access to residents and businesses in and around Seattle: Most of the companies use Wi-Fi to serve customers as far as five miles from an antenna and they're charging around $30 a month for a 1.5 Mbps service. These small operators are welcomed with open arms especially by residents who aren't served by any other type of broadband access. I'd love to see one of these startups expand and stay in business for a while. As this article notes, these small broadband wireless providers tend to come and go. The service providers targeting rural areas may have more success in the future if the FCC decides to loosen up power restrictions. Apparently the FCC is considering allowing operators in rural areas to use higher transmit power levels than operators in cities. In rural areas there's less potential for interference and more need to allow signals to travel far because people tend to be more spread out....

school deal
01/06/2005 03:00 PM
With Hewlett-Packard dropping out of the race, Apple Computer, IBM and Dell are still in the running to obtain a deal with a school district in Georgia to supply more than 63,000 laptop computers. A report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says Cobb County School District’s multimillion-dollar laptop computer proposal involves giving laptops to more than 63,000 teachers and middle and high school students at estimated cost of about $69.4 million over four years. Other expenses, including support, training and maintenance would have to be negotiated. The school system expects one-time costs of about $4.5 million to upgrade wireless capabilities in schools, plus additional or upgraded servers and server storage. Cost seems to be the major issue, with Cobb officials making no secret of their desire to pay $275 per machine – the same cost of Michigan's recent laptop contract with Hewlett-Packard. Cobb's undertaking would be one of the largest laptop programs in the United States if approved.

Few definitive numbers exist regarding the precise magnitude of the Slashdot effect, but estimates put the peak of the mass influx of page requests at anywhere from several hundred to several thousand hits per minute. RSS abuse and Slashdot IP banning

RSS abuse and Slashdot IP banning 05/12/2004 03:50 PM

I've had a number of people ask me about t his blog entry, whose title suggests that FeedDemon was banned from Slashdot. If you read the entire entry you'll find out that the subject is misleading - it's really about how Slashdot tries to protect itself from people who make too many requests on their feed.

Given the un necessary bandwidth consumption caused by some RSS readers, Slashdot certainly has every right to try to protect themselves from RSS abuse. The problem is that they ban based on IP address - which obviously causes problems for those behind a proxy server that shares a single IP address with dozens of other users. In all fairness, though, I'm not sure of a better solution to Slashdot's valid concerns.

Anyway...since some who read the aforementioned article thought it might be due to a problem in FeedDemon, I just wanted to make it clear that this will happen regardless of which RSS reader you use if you're behind an IP-sharing proxy. As I pointed out in an earlier post, FeedDemon employs a number of techniques to keep bandwidth consumption to a minimum - which not only keeps it 'Net-friendly, but also makes it extremely fast since it doesn't waste time performing unnecessary updates.

Durring the beginning of the Iraq war, I used P2P to get video and pictures that were censored from the US. The instant I hear about pictures, recordings, etc. on another network they can't show in the US, I go find them on P2P. Along with that search, I also found pictures that solders had taken along the way. Then I found gunship video (de-classified and classified because it had altitude/other readings) showing people walking into a building. The order came, and they leveled the building. Then started firing on anyone leaving the scene. You could actually see the men get thrown around after getting hit with munitions. On, and this video just happened to show one man running into a mosque so he was let go. (sure it wasn't leaked on purpose)

Slashdot Commentors on SuprNova 12/22/2004 01:03 AM

Following up on Torrent Shutdowns: Slashdot has posted a bit on Sup rNova being shutdown. What I found interesting were the comments: they are generally very anti-SuprNova, very pro-copyright. An example:

Furthermore, this is exactly what should be happening: the government attacks those who break the law, rather than those who create the tools. Bit torrent and p2p applications have legal, useful purposes; by seeking those who use them in illegal ways rather than banning them altogther is appropriate, rather than trying to ban them.

Firefox and Rendering Slashdot

Firefox and Rendering Slashdot 12/19/2004 03:25 PM
