BT Pushes Forward With SDSL Upgrades
BT Pushes Forward With SDSL Upgrades
02/01/2005 09:40 PMUK telco BT today announced that 500 exchanges around the country
would be receiving upgrades to give customers living in those areas
access to high speed SDSL. <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SDSL">SDSL
</a>is a <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Subscriber_Line"&
gt;DSL </a>variant, offering high download and upload speeds.
Bruce Stanford, Director of BT Whole sale, today said the move
represented BT's continued commitment to broadband. “
The wider
geographic availability of our wholesale SDSL products will allow more
service providers to meet the needs of the growing proportion of
smaller businesses, remote office and teleworkers that require
business-class broadband services, as well as generating new revenue
streams from the introduction of value-added services."
Stanford said that by the end of this financial year 300 exchanges
will be able to offer SDSL service, and over four times as many in
twelve months time. Once completed, BT will have 1300 exchanges with
SDSL services and 2/3 of businesses in the UK will be within reach.
BT have received flack for their slow progress and anti-competitive
prices in the broadband department; it emerged last year that the
company was charging wholesale resellers of ADSL (like Wanadoo) more
than BT customers. OFTEL, the UK telecoms regulator, has raised the
<a
href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/28/bt_bogeyman/"&
gt;possibility of a BT split up</a>, but is attempting to
increase competition in other ways. In other BT news, the company
recently announced plans to launch a service similar to PayPal,
offering online merchants transaction services. The service will
formalise the company's efforts in the area, which already amount to
20m transactions per year.

04/24/2004 03:25 AMMySpace:
The Show. Social networking is definitely going mainstream. I see
in Variety that a reality show is being developed based on people
meeting through social networking service MySpace. [Note: the article
led me to sign up for MySpace, and I will review... [Get Real]
I'd be interested in what Stowe thinks about MySpace. I call
it the "kitchen sink" of social networking. I'm amazed at just
how many features and capabilities it has. For what it seems to
lack in heart, soul and passion - it makes up with Rankings, Blogs and
Games. They even have classifieds! And Yahoo ads all over
the place!
But there's something about that place - which (BTW) they claim
they have more traffic than Friendster right now.

According to a PR Newswire this morning Nielsen NetRatings confirms
Myspace.coms market leadership in
Social Networking category:
LOS ANGELES, March 1 /PRNewswire/ MySpace.com,
formally launched just over one month ago, today announces it is the
number one ranked social networking site in terms of page views,
according to Nielsen NetRatings, the leading online measurement
tool.
The latest Nielsen statistics validate what our
users have been telling us for months, said Chris DeWolfe,
co-founder and President of MySpace.com. By allowing our users
to dictate the features they want, weve been able to develop an
offering that keeps them coming back.
MySpace.com has garnered an ardent and loyal fan base very
quickly thanks to the technological superiority of its offering.
MySpace.com is the only site of its kind to integrate blogs, instant
messaging, classified listings, voting, groups, user forums, music and
other user-created content. MySpace.com has also taken an active role
in sponsoring music shows, parties and other events for its online
users to socialize offline.
To become the leader in the social networking space
in just five months is an accomplishment were thrilled about,
but we see it as only the beginning, commented Tom Anderson,
co-founder of MySpace.com. In addition to its technological
advantages, MySpace.com allows a level of flexibility that is
unmatched in the online social networking world. Users are allowed to
create personalized web page profiles, which they can then use to link
up and communicate with others of similar hobbies and interests. As
the site is entirely advertiser-supported, use of the site is
free.
[The Social
Software Weblog]
This exposes what we've all known all along - that nobody goes to
Friendster anymore. And that it's lack of funtionality and
features - makes it a joke.
Now I'm not sure if its MySpace's features, or people themselves -
but they sure look like they're having fun over there.

MySpace continues to kick ass
MySpace continues to kick ass
06/30/2004 02:40 AMNetworking website offers marketing opportunities for
musicians.
The networking website trend, while not
exactly new anymore, is still thriving. While Friendster.com was the
first to reel users into the world of organized online socializing,
MySpace.com has since caught up. Many formal Friendster loyalists have
since moved over to MySpace for its added features such as instant
messaging, blogs, and classifieds. (That~s not to say that Friendster
doesn~t still have its own dedicated fan base.) One of the site~s most
recently added features, MySpace Music, is utilizing the networking
space to spread the word about music artists.
Consumers tell us that they mostly find out about new music through
their friends, which is exactly what MySpace Music allows users to do
online. While musicians can also create profiles on Friendster for
friends-of-friends to see, MySpace Music takes the concept a step
further by offering band Web pages and music downloads, thus turning
the site into a potential marketing tool. Similar to how Napster users
can view other users~ music libraries, MySpace users can view each
others ~friends~, thus providing MySpace Music artists with
considerable exposure and access to their fans. With the buzz on
MySpace Music, we expect to see more networking sites offering similar
marketing opportunities in the future.

01/04/2005 06:02 PMThe
Washington Post front page today lays out the Bush
administration's plans to cut promised Social Security benefits by
almost a third in the coming decades. The toughest cuts wouldn't come
til mid-century, but if Bush's plan actually gets enacted, the
consequence is clear: This won't be your grandfather's Social
Security. To make up the difference of what retirees won't get every
month, the Bush proposal would rely on personal investment accounts.
But of course, that's just a hope. Will the federal government give
Investing 101 classes to those who need it? It pays for marriage
classes, after all.

02/10/2004 02:47 AMThe FCC will address two voice over IP items at its February meeting
next Thursday:
ITEM NO. BUREAU
SUBJECT
1 WIRELINE COMPETITION TITLE: Petition for
Declaratory Ruling that Pulver.coms
Free World Dialup
is Neither
Telecommunications Nor a Telecommunications
Service (WC Docket No. 03-45).
SUMMARY: The Commission will consider a
Memorandum
Opinion and Order
concerning Pulver.coms petition for
declaratory ruling regarding the
classification of its
Free World
Dialup service.
2 WIRELINE COMPETITION TITLE: IP-Enabled
Services.
SUMMARY: The Commission
will consider a Notice of
Proposed Rulemaking concerning issues relating to
services and applications making use of the
Internet
Protocol, including but
not limited to voice over
Internet Protocol.
Look closely at the summary of the second item, which is the kickoff
of
the long-awaited VOIP proceeding. The Commission is bending over
backwards to emphasize that these are data applications, not another
form of telephony as we know it.
The framing is clearly intended to set up a decision not to subject
VOIP to legacy regulation as a "telecommunications service."
We'll see if that's what happens; the Chairman controls what gets
proposed but needs three votes to adopt anything. The VOIP
proceeding is going to draw out a great deal of political activity on
both sides. There is a strong group of interests that will
advocate regulation in order to protect existing revenues and subsidy
flows.
This will be an important fight for the future of the Internet.
The tech community needs to realize what's at stake, and support
efforts to keep VOIP out of the legacy regulatory environment.

A few weeks ago, my blog featured a screencast
with Jason Hunter, a Java expert now working for Mark Logic.
Jason's current fascination (and now mine) is the XML-oriented query
language, XQuery. During our 12-minute demo/discussion, he alternated
between applications shown in a browser and code exposition in a
command shell.
A few days later, inspired by what Jason had shown me, I began working
with the Mark Logic engine myself. As is my custom when learning a new
programming environment, I opened up a flock of browser tabs. Some I
filled with documentation about the XQuery language, others with code
examples.
And then a funny thing happened. I found myself ignoring all those
tabs and returning again and again to the screencast. Jason's demos
were springboards for the things I wanted to do, and his code
narration had shown me how to do them.
...
It wasn't just that Jason had transferred parts of his mental map to
me in the ancient way: monkey see, monkey do. His live performance
merely showed me what was possible. I still had to revisit scenes in
order to learn the details, and thanks to the video, I could.
People with seemingly superhuman memories give us clues about how this
works. When asked about their talent, they invariably say they've
learned to hang information on a narrative that structures what they
know and makes it easy to access. We're hardwired to tell ourselves --
and one another -- stories, and to filter our
understanding of the world through them.
Civilization took a great leap forward when we learned how to write
stuff down. Now we're learning to film our stories and to TiVo them.
Fasten your seat belt.

02/05/2005 09:50 PMI've got several levels of passwords I use, high security, medium,
and low, depending on what I need it for (amazon? high. gmail? medium.

ones up and make them good.
Lifehacker has a simple tip to making a good password that
involves intertwining two words into one, but the best tip I ever got
was from Rusty at kuro5hin.
Think of a classic song. Now write down the first letter of each
word in the chorus. At one time, I had a super high security password
that was something like "1itlntyed2cbaba1." That stood for
"One is the lonliest number that you'll ever do. Two...can
be as bad as one..."
I replaced numbers mentioned in the song with number signs in my
password for extra l33t-ness. It was super easy to remember this
nearly impossible thing, because I could just sing it and write it
down.

Report: some Napster users share
passwords to save money
04/09/2005 03:30 AMXeni Jardin:
An article in the Register today reports that it is possible for more
than one person to share a username/password simultaneously on
Napster's digital music service, so they don't have to pay for
separate accounts.
Over the past couple of days MusicAlly has run several tests, during
which we were able to download and stream simultaneously from four
separate computers across two separate Internet connections for good
stretches of time. Our findings so far suggest this situation is the
same whether we use a trial account, a paid-for credit card account or
the £14.95 Napster To Go service. By comparison, several other
Internet subscription services, including Real's Rhapsody, log the
first user out automatically if a second user logs in using the same
username and password.
Arguably the fact that one of the subsequent users could order one of
Napster's paid-for permanent downloads, thus adding a charge to the
original user's card, provides a small disincentive against sharing
usernames and passwords. But Napster requires users to insert their
credit card security number before making a major purchase, such as
the upgrade from the £9.95 service to Napster To Go. What's more, the
credit card numbers themselves are not exposed on the accounts page,
so there's no danger of having your card details ripped off by someone
with whom you're sharing the music service.
