Operators Need to Overhaul Pricing
Strategies to Kick-Start Europe’s
Lagging Mobile Content Market, Says
Analysys
12/19/2004 03:08 PMThe Western European mobile content market has been slow to take off,
reaching just EUR2.3 billion in 2003, well behind Japan and Korea.
Revenues could reach EUR15.0 billion by 2009 if operators resolve
pricing and billing issues. New services are taking centre stage,
such as mobile music, video clips and downloadable information
applications. Java will increasingly displace SMS and WAP as the
method of delivery for text-based information. Report includes
forecasts for service adoption, spend, ARPU and revenue in France,
Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, the UK and Western Europe as a whole.

Content?
Should Broadband Providers Offer
Content?
04/19/2004 12:26 PMApparently, the talk of a recent broadband conference was on how
broadband providers
needed to focus on charging for "premium" content to
expand their business, which seems to miss the point (once again) of
broadband services. The content that draws people is already out
there, and bundling it with an internet connection only serves to add
one more mouth to feed out of a small pie - and doesn't help anyone
make much money. When broadband providers look at providing content,
they immediately fall back into the "broadcast" mindset, where users
are passive consumers of content that is pushed to them. That's not
what people use the internet for. They use it for interactive
services (such as email, web surfing, VoIP and file sharing), where
they get to choose the content and what they do with it. At the
conference, they even had people saying that SBC's latest deal with
CinemaNow (to offer downloadable movies) was a huge step forward.
This is the same CinemaNow that hasn't received much traction at all
and has been reviewed (repeatedly) as being a terrible
waste of
money. The article quotes CinemaNow's competitor MovieLink as
putting the
blame for their failures on the broadband
providers. They claim that the two movie services "offer up plenty of
content," even though reviewers of the service have complained about
their "pathetically thin selection." Ignoring that, however, the
quote from MovieLink's CEO pins the blame on broadband providers for
not making it easier for users to move movies from their PC to their
television using wireless connectivity. Of course, both MovieLink and
CinemaNow use heavy-handed copy protection that probably has a lot
more to do with the difficulty than the broadband service providers
and their support of WiFi. Instead of focusing on ways to turn
broadband connections into another TV (we already have those), they
should be focused on the services (not content) that people want.

Mobile Operators Want Yet Another
Standard
Mobile Operators Want Yet Another
Standard
12/31/2004 05:18 AMHow very typical... After all the hype about 3G -- which so far has
failed to live up to expectations, and all the impending hype about
other wireless broadband technologies such as WiMAX and FLASH-OFDM, it
looks like a bunch of mobile operators have decided to toss all that
and
get to work on a completely
new standard for mobile broadband, with the aim of being 10
times as fast as 3G. While it isn't really surprising, this is the
type of thing the industry is famous for. They overhype a technology
way beyond what it can do, then when people realize it really isn't
that impressive, they move on to a new standard that they'll hype up
for years. While there are some big players joining up to work on
this project, expect it to take
quite a long time for anything
to actually come of it. By the time this offering reaches a
commercial launch, the requirements of users are likely to have
changed drastically. The competitive marketplace will also be very
different. So, before people go off and declare this new, completely
imaginary standard to be
the wireless broadband technology of
the future, it might make sense to wait a few years and see how far
it's really progressed.

Excess Customer Churn is Costing Mobile
Operators Billions, Says Analysys
02/01/2005 08:49 PMIn 2003, excess customer churn cost European mobile operators EUR4.5
billion in unnecessary expenses and EUR5.6 billion in lost revenue –
equivalent to 8.6% of total mobile revenues. Controlling churn so that
rates are lower than competitors’ is an effective mechanism to
continue to grow revenues in a saturating market. Analysys warns that
mobile operators must pursue cost-effective churn-management
strategies that suit their market position, or face significant loss
of market share over the coming years. [PRWEB Jan 29, 2005]
