Wireless Media Hubs Experience Zero Gs 04/21/2004 11:29 AM
GearBits sets a not-so-lofty goal for Wireless Media Hubs (integrated Screen, MP3 and internet radio streaming, and 802.11g) and finds no device quite cuts the mustard. D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player

D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player 06/15/2004 06:54 AM

dlink_dsm320.jpg image

While it's one of the first wireless media players to come with 802.11g WiFi stock standard, a few usability hang-ups prevent PC Magazine's review team from giving the D-Link DSM-320 a better than average score. It's got all the media playback mojo you'd expect from these modern day VCRs (which are really just hardware front-ends to your computer's media collection), yet the file browsing has some serious limitations (like no 'play album' selections and a broken search algorithm), there is a single, obnoxious screen saver, and the streaming internet radio is limited to only AOL Radio, leaving behind the thousands of free stations of the web. Up the upside, the hardware is solid, with lots of I/O ports and a decent remote, and most of the issues software based, meaning there's no reason that D-Link couldn't fix them in the future. For $170, you could almost risk buying it now and trusting D-Link to patch the firmware later.

d-link_dsm-320.jpg imageThe Apple Airport Express (shipping this week, by the way) is a decent option for those already using iTunes, but what if you want to stream more than that? NoDRM takes a(nother) look at one option, the D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Multimedia Player, an 802.11g-enabled streaming media outlet that can stream not only audio, but all sort of different kinds of video -- most of the major video formats in fact (even DVD VOB files). The only real downside they see to the $166 player is the inability to change the aspect ratio of video (which can lead to movies looking oddly smushed) and the inability of 802.11g to always provide enough bandwidth to stream video over even relatively short distances, say, from a downstairs computer to an upstairs Multimedia Player. Of course, you can always fall back on wired Ethernet.

Your Next OS: Windows 2006?

Your Next OS: Windows 2006? 01/02/2004 06:06 AM
The next version of Windows, code-named Longhorn, is still in the early stages of its journey to the retail corral, but our hands-on look at a preview reveals features we'd love to have now--while raising some intriguing questions. In addition to the interface revisions, including the new Sidebar, that we saw in our first glimpse of Longhorn (see "Sneak Peek: Windows XP's Successor"), Microsoft has altered Windows Explorer, the program that controls the desktop and its computer- and file-browsing windows. In our preview code (the official beta isn't due until the second half of 2004, and rumor has it that the upgrade may not ship until 2006), Windows Explorer routinely displayed much more information about files and computer resources than it does in Windows XP. New links in Explorer panels let users and/or applications associate search keywords, comments, and categories with files, data within files, or objects stored on other devices, computers, or networks. This is the first evidence of Longhorn's new WinFS file system, which lets you find related resources regardless of their physical location or object type.

400,000 Vacuum Bots by 2006?

400,000 Vacuum Bots by 2006? 11/11/2003 01:16 AM
CNN has an article touting Hitachi's vacuum robot. Yeah, yeah, "big deal" I said to myself. But, what was really interesting to me; was that in the article it states that a UN study says that the vacuum cleaner robot sales are to soar to over 400k units by 2006. I'm aware that this has been reported before and also again back in the past, but when the numbers hit me... Wow! But, me without a robot vacuum company and in 2006 there'll be sales of 400k vacuum robots! That really... [no... I refrain]. Despite their high price tag, (well, actually the price of at least one isn't so bad) it appears that people love their home vacuum bots, and time is getting scarce. There could be also be as many as 125k lawn-mower bots, and up to 1.5 million robot toys like Sony's AIBO robotic dog in just a couple years. Wow, big numbers, I know, but still the magnatitude finally hit me and I guess I was a little stunned, and maybe it WAS a little surprising to me. Is it just me? I guess it's time for me to dust off my vacuum bot designs and get on the bandwagon - there's money to be made and time's a wastin.

New Microsoft Exchange due out in 2006 03/30/2005 05:19 PM
The next version of Microsoft's Exchange Server--software used to manage e-mail, contact lists and calendars--will arrive in 2006, according to a company executive.

Andy Lees, corporate vice president of marketing for Microsoft's server and tools business, revealed the ship date Tuesday. Previously, the Redmond, Wash.-based software company had said the software would arrive in 2006 or 2007. The software, currently called Exchange Server 12, will incorporate new features to handle voice mail and faxes. The current version of Exchange Server was released in 2003. It's a dominant program in the market, but it faces competition from products sold by IBM, Novell, Sun Microsystems and others.

Car-To-Car Ad-hoc WLAN to be created by
2006
12/22/2004 01:23 AM
Found this rather neat article on The Register, infact, it was something I was discussing with a bunch of friends at college last week! Nice to know we are being heard.

Car makers BMW, Audi, Daimler Chrysler, Volkswagen, Renault and Fiat have won a German government grant to help develop the basis for a standard method for car-to-car wireless data.

NOW is focusing on 802.11 technology and IPv6 to develop "inter-vehicle communication based on ad hoc networking principles". Essentially, it's exploring ways that moving vehicles can automatically set up temporary links with other cars, bikes and trucks in the vicinity, and share traffic information.

With routing capabilities, the whole thing could become a huge 'automobile Internet', with vehicles warning each other - and their drivers - about slow-downs, bad weather, accidents and other road problems.

On a personal note, I really can't even begin to imagine the possibilities here, a road traffic innovation, chat/P2P/file sharing heaven on the roads, or a big headache for the RIAA/MPAA/BSA? It could definitely be all of the above! One thing is for sure, you'll never get bored in traffic anymore.
