Save The Children calls on release of
Iraqi children from jails.
07/08/2004 10:09 PM
Save The Children calls on release of Iraqi children from jails. This apparently in response to recent media reports on the abuse of children in Iraqi prisons. And it's not just Save the Children who is concerned, but UNICEF, Amnesty International, and the Red Cross. Infact, Congress has called for a special briefing tomorrow from the Pentagon on "confidential reports" from the Red Cross on prison conditions in Iraq. The Pentagon is closing the briefing to the public, however, and apparently thinks that even Congress shouldn't know the details of how we treat prisoners.
"It's something of a stretch of policy and procedures to give them to the Congress," Rumsfeld spokesman Larry Di Rita said.

Watching Them Watching Us

Watching Them Watching Us 08/04/2004 03:04 PM
The idea of watching back those who are watching us is not new. Every time it's brought up, someone points to David Brin's < i>The Transparent Society. Now, Brin has written up a long (and somewhat rambling) piece for Salon that points out, whether we like it or not, technology is forcing everyone to be more open. It's not a question of whether the technology is good or bad, but how it's used. His suggestion is that it's time to embrace the technology of surveillance (and sousveillance) in order to make sure that it's used properly. Simply trying to stop the rise of cameras, RFIDs and closely connected databases is doomed to fail. And, even worse, by fighting against it, many privacy advocates are making sure that these things are set up so only "they" (governments, corporations, someone who isn't you) have access -- leaving out any accountability. In a world where people are freaking out over camera phones, RFIDs and internet tapping, it's certainly an interesting read. Brin points out that all of these technologies have benefits when used properly, and even the negatives can be dealt with, if people really come up with ways to embrace the technology, rather than just deny its existence altogether.

Not only has Internet use cut into this country's sacred TV time, we are not paying strict enough attention to the glowing screens in our living rooms. BIGresearch reports (via Center for Media Research) that a survey of 12,000+ "consumers" shows that we're doing more multitasking while watching TV: # 66.3% regularly or occasionally read the mail. # 60.1% regularly or occasionally go online. # 55.0% regularly or occasionally read the newspaper. # 51.8% regularly or occasionally read magazines. # 0.4% mentally undress Larry King Please, America, let's focus! PS: I made up one of those statistics....

« A picture of our expected bundle of fur at 12 weeks :) »

Having caught up with the news after our holiday in a country that had few TVs and even fewer western newspapers, I just don't know what to say and will instead just share an adorable Saint Santa photo from the breeders that they sent to us. I love the look of quiet indignation at being made to wear the costume. :)

Watching BitTorrents Fly By

Watching BitTorrents Fly By 01/29/2004 02:49 AM

Now you can find out what torrents are available at Torrentz.com (via Robert Scoble).  Interesting thing is that, nstead of using spiderbots, they are using people as bots, meaning users register torrents streams they either own or found.  Is it working?  You bet.

What's available?  Rips of all kinds including movies, porns, music, toons, appz, warez.  For example, one of the most popular torrent is Adobe Photoshop CS 8.0.  I am sure RIAA will be chasing those torrents soon if not already, but I am not sure if Torrentz.com itself is illegal or not.

There is a bit of drama behind the site too.  Apparently, some joker hacked the site to steal the source code and setup his own site, TorrentReactor.net, with minimal changes.  The guy even admits he stole the code.  I guess he thought stealing from someone who encourages theft is not really stealing.

It's a dog eat dog world out there.

Jay Rosen: Adopt a Campaign Journalist in 2004: The Drift of a Suggestion:

Over the holidays, an idea gained some Net traction: webloggers "adopting" a campaign reporter. That means you monitor and collect all the reporter's work, and then... And then what? Follow the turns as the suggestion is taken up.

Check out the comments by Dan Gillmor, Jeff Jarvis and many others. Interesting stuff. Dan's postback is Adopting Journalists: Friendly Advice and Fact-Checking, or Antagonistic Truth Squads? His gist:

I like the idea that people are watching what I say and correcting me if I get things wrong -- or challenging my conclusions, based on the same facts (or facts I hadn't know about when I wrote the piece.) This is a piece of tomorrow's journalism, and we in the business should welcome the feedback and assistance that, if we do it right, becomes part of a larger conversation.

But if the idea is to create some kind of organized collection of Truth Squads, I'm less comfortable. Here are just three of the many, many questions/issues that come immediately to mind (and as you'll see, I'm not alone in wondering these things):

I think there's another issue here: one of class, or caste. As members of The Press his last week at Macworld and CES, Dan and I belonged to an exclusive club, with its own private rooms, free food, wi-fi Net connections, and other freebies, not to mention special treatment by vendors. We're insiders.

Yet many markets — politics and technology are just two — include a growing number of outsiders with online journals who are just as important to the market's ecosystem as credentialed journalists. It's only natural, at this early stage in our evolution to what Dan calls Journalism 3.0, for outsiders to play gotcha! with insiders.
