Cincinnati, Ohio, tries sponsorship model: A small firm in Cincinnati is gathering sponsors to fund free Wi-Fi in a number of places around town. Roadrunner is handling installation. The article describes the founder calling it a public/private partnership, but it's all private businesses involved so far, although they will apparently be gaining access to public buildings and spaces to deploy the hotspots. Henderson, Kentucky, just in time for blues festival: Downtown Henderson has free Wi-Fi at the riverfront and two parks. This allows visitors to W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival to have Wi-Fi with their ribs. Tokyo, Japan, will have 2,200 power-line mounted access points: The Livedoor Company is setting up the network around Tokyo charging less than $5 per month (¥525) for unlimited access. Fuji Television will use the service to send video back from Tokyo locations to its studios. It commences in late July within what's described as the entire JR Yamanote Loop Line commuter train's service area by October. Lievdoor wants 1 million customers. They'll invest ¥700 million (US$6.5 million), but plan ¥10 to ¥15 billion (US$90 to $140 million) for a national service. [link via Keio Oyama]...

Chicago's public sculpture can't be
photographed by the public

Chicago's public sculpture can't be
photographed by the public
02/07/2005 02:07 AM
Cory Doctorow: Chicago spent $270 million on its Millennium Park, placing a big public sculpture by Anish Kapoor in the middle of it, bought with public money. Woe betide any member of the public who tries to photograph this sculpture, though: it's a copyrighted sculpture and Chicago is spending even more money policing Chicagoans who try to photograph it and make a record of what their tax-dollars bought.

If I were them, I'd ask for my money back. What kind of jerk sculptor sells the city a piece of public art for a public park and then demands that no one take pictures of it? Christ, they should run this guy out of town on a rail and melt the goddamned sculpture down for scrap. Then they should fire the politician who signed a purchase contract that reserved the photographic rights and run him out of town on the same rail. Between the artist's greed and the procurement officer's malfeasance, this is about the vilest display of human venality I've heard of all day.

The copyrights for the enhancements in Millennium Park are owned by the artist who created them. As such, anyone reproducing the works, especially for commercial purposes, needs the permission of that artist.

Well things didn't go as I'd hoped for the Sox opener (Pedro and the boys lost 7-2 against Baltimore), but at least the UConn women won against Minnesota and are on their way to the NCAA finals against Tennessee tomorrow night. Go Huskies! Watching the women play last night was amazing, and the improvement in the women's game even in the past five years is really something. Great ball movement, fakes, no-look passes -- it's a pleasure to watch.

Airespace Teams with IBM

Airespace Teams with IBM 09/17/2004 12:24 PM
Airespace, the wireless LAN switch maker, formed a partnership with IBM: The deal will open the door for Airespace to market its products to IBM customers. Among startup WLAN switch vendors, Airespace has scored some notable deals. It has OEM agreements with Alcatel, Nortel, NEC, and a co-development deal with D-Link. Some other switch makers have also scored big-name deals as well. Trapeze recently announced that it formed an OEM deal with 3Com that is expected to blossom into a co-development relationship. Observers have been expecting a shake-out in the WLAN switch market essentially since the segment was born because it appears that there are too many startups for the market to support. Partnerships with big-name vendors certainly adds credibility to the startups which can in turn help them raise financing and potentially stay in business....

Dress code at the mall

Dress code at the mall 08/27/2004 01:46 PM
David Pescovitz: The conservatown that spawned me--Cincinnati, Ohio--now boasts a mall with a dress code. Rent-a-cops at Cincinnati Mills mall hand out yellow code of conduct slips to those violating behavior and, amazingly, clothing policies. For example, Miami University sophomore Donnie Jefferson was "cited" two different times for sporting a sideways baseball cap. On another occasion, he says, a group of his friends who were wearing white t-shirts and jeans were escorted out. Hmmm... I wonder if it's because Donnie and his pals happen to black. No, it couldn't possibly be that. Not a chance.
"We have to be consistent across the board with the cap issue... There are, unfortunately in these days and times, groups that would mistake that as a different message and we don't want that," Jim Childress, Cincinnati Mills general manager, told WCPO. "In our business a customer is a customer. There is no distinction among age, religion, ethnic background."
I'd love to send a middle-aged white guy in there rocking a sideways Reds cap and see how he's treated. Link (Thanks, C-Lo, my Censornati homeboy!)
