Chapter 3: Recommendations for Managed
and Unmanaged Code Interoperability
(Longhorn)
01/07/2004 06:20 PMThe preceding chapter put forward the recommendation that moving to
managed code can provide immediate benefits as well as make a long
term investment that aligns with the technology foundation of
"Longhorn" moving forward. With this in mind, many organizations have
a large investment in an existing unmanaged code base such as MFC or
COM. Thus, the interoperability between .NET and COM is critical.

Solution Guide for Sybase/UNIX to SQL
Server 2000: Database Engine Migration
and Application Interoperation
05/18/2004 01:31 PMThis guide presents information on the most common issues encountered
and possible solutions for migrating Sybase databases to SQL Server.
The guide focuses on procedures for transferring the items in a Sybase
database and on redirecting and redeploying DB-Library and CT-Library
applications to use a migrated database. Depending on the specific
technologies used to host these client applications, at least three
options are available for reconfiguring them: 1) Client applications
can remain in their existing environment and be redirected to SQL
Server. 2) Client applications previously executing under UNIX can be
redeployed to the computer running Microsoft Windows®, hosted in the
Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX (SFU) environment, and then
redirected to SQL Server. 3) Client applications can be fully ported
to the Microsoft Windows platform and rewritten to take advantage of
Microsoft technologies and APIs.

06/07/2004 11:41 PMThe code samples, which demonstrate how to use many of the new
"Longhorn" technologies, are provided in Visual Basic, C#, and the
Managed Extensions for C++. You can locate and view samples, organized
by technology, by choosing the Samples tab in the documentation
viewer. For each sample, you can view the source file, read a topic
describing the sample, and copy the sample to your local hard drive to
build and run the sample. You can build the Visual Basic and C#
samples using the commmand line compilers included in "Longhorn" or
you can use the PDC edition of the "Whidbey" release of Microsoft
Visual Studio® .NET. To compile and run the C++ samples, you must use
the PDC edition of the "Whidbey" release of Visual Studio .NET.
Samples that ship in the .NET Framework SDK are not included in this
release of the "Longhorn" SDK. However, they are available in the
"Whidbey" release of Visual Studio .NET.

Interoperability is Troublesome
Interoperability is Troublesome
12/15/2003 02:08 PM ">Despite best efforts from industry standard groups,
interoperability among Wi-Fi products is hit or miss these days: Not
all products are certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance and some vendors are
cutting corners. For example, they may not do a great job of
implementing the mechanism that asks an 802.11g chip to fall back to
802.11b. New security features and the plethora of chips available
increase the complications in making all devices compatible. I don't
imagine the compatibility issue will get any better as we move into
the future because more upgrades to the standard continue to be
developed....
The Quest for Interoperability
The Quest for Interoperability
03/14/2003 01:28 AMFor years, enterprise software firms have used the promise of
interoperability to sell their wares and the lack of it to chastise
their competition. But now that Web services have arrived, and
products such as the UAN are becoming a reality, interoperability is
no longer such a weighty issue. Or is it?

Tales of Interoperability
03/06/2004 01:49 AMThe Register reports on a story that ran in a magazine called
Computing Which? that details failures to get standard Wi-Fi gear from
different manufacturers to interoperate: The editors tried to set up a
Linksys 802.11g router and a Netgear bridge but couldn't get the two
devices to interact. Eventually one Netgear help desk agent told the
writers the products could be incompatible. It doesnt appear that the
original story is online so it's hard to know more about this trial.
It sounds as though the aim of the report was to test how easy or
difficult it is to set up wireless networks. The writers concluded
that it's too hard to use. It would be unfortunate if the industry has
a hard time attracting additional users because the products are
inoperable and difficult to use....
