Automating The Hiring Manager

Automating The Hiring Manager 06/01/2004 02:43 AM
Computerized job screening technology has been popular in the casino and hotel industry for some time, but now it appears that many more retail outlets are mak ing all job applicants fill out a computer questionnaire first, which does a first pass filter on whether or not they're worth pursuing. Some stores are even setting up kiosks in the store for job applicants - and if a good one comes by, they may page the manager to grab them before they can get out the door. Meanwhile, some other stores are relying on the technology even after they've hired people to help track their progress and monitor their work. Now all we need is the computer to decide who should be fired (and maybe have it send an email or SMS with the bad news) and people really will be working for the machine...

Automating feed subscriptions 02/01/2005 09:34 PM

The idea of getting a browser to handle a feed correctly when it encounters an appropriate MIME type is gaining steam. Randy put together a spec for how to configure your feeds to handle what he’s calling the Universal Subscription Mechanism. By adding a bit of code to your feeds, any feed reader that understands the spec and registers itself as the RSS helper app for your browser can automatically handle feeds when you open an RSS document on the web.

Randy’s taken things a step further and written a small shim for Windows that works with your browser to pass feeds off to My Yahoo.

We’ve also added support for this to Pheedo, so in addition to inserting ads into your feeds, you can also easily USM-enable your feeds.

Automating deployment with Subversion

Automating deployment with Subversion 04/07/2005 12:02 AM

Any developer knows that deployment is often a highly-manual process. In this edition of Linux.Ars, the crew looks at a tool — Subversion — that can make deployment from a development to production environment nearly painless.

The process is fairly painless. On the development server, I check out my website from Subversion. This, particularly when adding an existing project to Subversion, allows me to make sure that i have a complete working copy under version control. Next, I add a post-commit script on my Subversion server.

There's more, but you'll have to read on to get the goods on Subversion. In addition, we've got Tools, Tips, and Tweaks covering Synergy, an app that allows you to control multiple machines using a single keyboard and mouse, and even share a clipboard. There's also other tidbits from the week's Linux news and of course, the Cool App of the Week. Read on.

Saving the already-saved Social Security
system

Saving the already-saved Social Security
system
02/01/2005 09:14 PM
I received some feedback via email regarding my post, No smoking gun in Iraq from January 13th. One reader wrote: Gee, I remember back in 1998 the Clintons and just about every Democrat in Congress were screaming that the budget "surplus" should only be used to "save Social Security." If you believe Social Security needed saving back then and doesn’t now then you must believe it has already been saved. Well, who saved it? Clinton didn’t do anything, so the only answer can be George W. Bush. So following the logic of the Democratic talking points that Social Security is not in crisis (which you have clearing bought into for whatever reason) to be consistent historically you must be willing to admit that someone saved Social Security already and you should be able to tell us who that was. Further you must be able to tell us what transpired in the last six years in the Social Security budget to take it from needing to be "saved" to no longer being in crisis. Are you willing to blog on that a bit? I could blog on that for a bit (and address the issue of conflating talk of long-term Social Security reform with "crisis" and an immediate push towards privatization), but it's a lot easier to point everyone to someone who can do a much better job of it than I: Hendrik Hertzberg at The New Yorker. In this week's Talk of The Town, Unsocial Insecurity Mr. Hertzberg writes: "This is one of my charges, is to explain to Congress as clearly as I can: the crisis is now," Bush proclaimed at an "economic summit" a month ago. He does indeed have some 'splaining to do. This year, the Social Security system--the payroll tax, which brings money in, and the pension program, which sends money out--will bring in about $180 billion more than it sends out. It will go on bringing in more than it sends out until 2028, at which point it will begin to draw on the $3.5 trillion surplus it will by then have accumulated. The surplus runs out in 2042, right around the time George W. Bush turns ninety-six. After that, even if nothing has changed, the system's income will continue to cover seventy-three per cent of its outgo. That's using the Social Security Administration's economic and demographic assumptions, which are habitually pessimistic. Using the assumptions of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the surplus runs out in 2052. And if one uses the economic growth assumptions that Bush's own budget office uses when it calculates the effects of his own tax cuts, the surplus runs out in--er, maybe never. I do support some kind of Social Security reform, if only to ensure that the surplus never runs out. But I question the language of "crisis" and the rush to privatization -- a solution that Hertzberg points out that even White House officials and The Comptroller General of the United States, David M. Walker, say does nothing to eliminate the long-term gap and maintain the solvency of the fund.

California Closer To Making Employers

California Closer To Making Employers
Tell Employees They're Spying On Them
05/25/2004 08:49 PM
The California Senate has now approved legislation that would require companies to tell their employees if they're monitoring their emails, web usage or location. It's a bit sad that we actually need a law to say this, as any employer that's worth working for should at least let their employees know if they intend to monitor their emails. At first I was wondering who would be against such a bill, but the article lists out a bunch of organizations: the California Chamber of Commerce, California Manufacturers & Technology Association, American Staffing Association, California Manufacturers & Technology Association and the Motion Picture Association of America. Basically, a bunch of business organizations that apparently want to reserve the right to spy on their employees without telling them that they may do it. Note that this law doesn't even require the employer to tell the employee when it's happening - just to give them a one time note when they start employment saying that they might, one day, monitor communications. This isn't a particularly high bar. Also, what does the MPAA have to do with this? I can (sort of) understand all the business associations in their own shortsighted way worried about adding burdens to employers, but the MPAA?

Ars System Guide: Ultimate Budget Box

Ars System Guide: Ultimate Budget Box 06/05/2005 10:53 PM

In addition to the usual thr ee-tiered System Guide, we occasionally supplement it to bring you more specialized build-it-yourself machines. These will be designed with a specific purpose in mind, and the components will reflect that. The May 2005 edition marks the second appearance of the Ultimate Budget Box.

To all those people clamoring for a minimalist Budget Box: this is it. Look around inside most corporate offices, where most computers need to handle a few Office documents and light Internet use. They don't need to be able to burn CDs or handle 3D-intensive games, but they do need to be reliable and affordable. Lots of consumers out there probably want a similar box, an appliance that lets them get onto the Internet, take care of e-mail, and do a few documents . . . Low-cost, reliability, and quality are key. That is what the Ultimate Budget Box is about: not skimping on components, but not loading it up with features either.

This is the perfect system to build for your parents (unless you frequently find them on the same Unreal Tournament 2004 server you frequent), spouse, or anyone else who does not need bleeding-edge performance. Come see what you can build for under US$500.

The system is self configuring among nodes which need no non-volatile or permanent storage. To set up a CUWiN network, you burn a CD with the 0.5.5 software later this week and use it to boot a computer with a support wireless card. The system finds nearby nodes, creates tables, and establishes itself as part of the network. The software is free and open source. The full press release is after the jump....
