What Dell Support Thinks of Dell
What Dell Support Thinks of Dell
03/30/2005 04:59 PMIn an InfoWorld Gripe Line Blog, anonymous Dell
employees are asked to make their feelings known about working for
Dell. As we all know, Dell moved their tech support to India and they
have employees in other parts of the world now too. It sounds like the
new users dumb questions and working with Windows constant crashing
and errors have driven even the Indian support workers to the brink of
giving up. Here are a few quotes from the above story..
Back about eighteen
months ago, the comments started off pretty apologetic about the Dell
support gripes readers were airing. A poster who said he or she had
just resigned after six months with Dell support in Hyderabad said
that Dell technicians would sometimes know right off that a problem
required a replacement component, "but we are bound by company policy
which prohibits us from dispatching components until we finish the
script given us by Dell management," the poster wrote. "I basically
felt really bad in situations wherein I had to make really old people
open up their computers, and I did in fact meet people on the phone
who would be in tears if we told them that they need to open their
machines.
"I too am working in Dell tech support,"
the poster said, saying his job had been to route calls to the proper
support group. "The great thing is that tomorrow is my last day here.
Great because this by far has been one of the least gratifying and
frustrating positions I have ever held. Yes, there are extensive and
considerable problems with Dell tech support. Their outsourcing to
India is not even the least of them. Every day is a continuous assault
by absolutely clueless and irate customers and an ineffective
phone-based support system that is enough to make anyone crack. I'm
saying that it all sucks: Dell's systems and their support and the
morons who purchase them ... So many times I've had to restrain myself
from telling customers who are whining about what a piece their Dell
is that, hey, guess you should've bought a Mac. Goodbye, Dell!"

Mac-Dell?
Mac-Dell?
06/17/2005 05:52 PMDell has made some interesting announcements regarding Apple Computer
in the past few weeks.
Two weeks ago, the company said it is to launch a line of 'premium'
PCs, which will be aimed at the growing rank of consumers relying on
their home computers to manage video and music and to play
graphic-intensive computer games that depend on high-spec components.
This announcement marks a departure from the company's traditional
line of low-cost computers and the move has been seen as a threat to
Apple. Dell denied that would be targeting Apple's growing base, but
did admit that it will sell specialised software. Dell also said that
it hopes the new line-up will help it reach its aim of USD $80 billion
in annual sales.
Does this tie in to Michael Dell’s statement to Fortune Magazine today
that he welcomes the notion of selling machines loaded with Apple’s
software? Dell has for several years sold servers loaded with Linux,
so the idea may not be entirely out of the ballpark. It would
certainly be a great OS for his new ‘premium’ line of computers.
"If Apple decides to open the Mac OS to others, we would be happy to
offer it to our customers," Dell wrote in an email. It's the first
time any PC industry executive has openly shown enthusiasm for selling
machines with Apple's software for fear of offending Microsoft.
Will there be a Mac-Dell in the future? However much it seems like a
longshot now, the Mac faithful are learning fast that nothing is
sacred and that anything is possible.

Dell is driving me nuts.
I ordered Dell's 8400 desktop a week ago and it's schedule to be
shipped on 27th of
this month. I didn't want to spend that much so I got a
moderate CPU (3.2GHz
P4), so so storage (250G), non-gamer's video card (ATI X300SE), and
2G of speedy memory.
X300SE was intended to be just a placeholder for a better graphics
card later.
Audio card? Whatever came with the motherboard.
Just now I checked the price and found that I could get faster CPU
(3.4GHz), moderate
gamer's graphics card (ATI X800 SE), and top of the line audio card
(Audigy2?) for
the same price! I have bought countless computers before and
I have learned
to live with price drops. But seeing such drastic price drops
even before the
box ships is too much to bear.
So I cancelled the order and came over to my blog to vent some
frustration.
At this rate, I'll keep on cancelling my orders until there is
a severe component
shortage. If there are more people like me, I think companies
like Dell will
have to offer price adjustements at the time of shipment.
Heck, it's not the
money. It's the ol' feeling of getting shafted loyally in
real time.
Update:
I went ahead with the new order and got free 2nd shipping as well
which means it will
arrive about the same time as my previous order would have
arrived. Nice.
I am starting to understand a little more of how my wife feels when
she hounds local
mall clerks into making up differences whenever there is a
sale. I couldn't
believe it when I first heard of it. She buys something for X
and, if store
lowers the price to Y sometime later, then she somehow talk them
into coughing up
X-Y. What I don't understand is why US economy doesn't
collapse with shoppers
like her around.
Update 2:
Aha! I found the culprit behind the sudden price drop.
In
tel
cut the price of its CPUs by as much as 35% on August
23rd.Since
Dell had a fairly large number of customers waiting to
receive 8400 desktops,
I think many of them will cancel their orders to take advantage of
the price drop.
