AP - A botched relay handoff doomed Marion Jones' chances of winning even a single medal at the Athens Olympics, a disastrous ending to her summer of turmoil and disappointment. Hoping to win a pair of golds Friday, Jones was shut out instead. An hour after she finished fifth in the long jump, Jones was unable to make the handoff in the 400-meter relay when Lauryn Williams left too early.

The University of Georgia is entering a new phase of its WAGZone experiment: A year ago, the university and the Athens Clarke County government launched a Wi-Fi zone that covers 20 blocks of downtown. Since then, students have built 40 proof-of-concept projects that use the network. Now, the university has launched the Mobile Media Consortium as an academic-industry partnership to spur the development of technologies that use the network that can improve quality of life. Initial industry partners include HP, XcellNet, Air2Web, and ExecuTrain. The consortium hopes to add five more partners....

We ended up watching quite a bit of Olympic TV then on August 15th went to the Twin Valley Riding Club Rodeo southwest of Esterhazy, so the farm visit was quite sports-intensive. Herewith Olympic remarks and rodeo pics...

Greek fighter planes and NATO surveillance aircraft are guarding the skies. Patriot missile batteries have been installed to confront potential terrorist threats from above.

Athens 2004 Hyperlinking Policy

Athens 2004 Hyperlinking Policy 09/07/2004 11:52 PM

Hyperlink Policy: I stumbled across this, the official hyperlink policy for the Athens 2004 Olympic Site. (I found this from one of our readers' sites, but I don't remember which one, sorry...)

For your protection and ours we have established a procedure for parties wishing to introduce a link to the ATHENS 2004 website on their site.

Oh, it's for MY protection? Well, then, lead on my great protector...

Use the term ATHENS 2004 only, and no other term as the text referent

So that's the key to effective Google-bombing: threaten people to use the text you like.

Send a request letter to the Internet Department stating: Short description of site, Reason for linking, Unique URL containing the link, Publishing period, Contact point

Once the request has been mailed, interested parties can proceed to include the link and will only receive a response if ATHENS 2004 does not accept the link.

So I send a letter, and wait to hear if you don't like my link? Huh. Well, this may not be an original form of protest, but I think this policy is stupid so I will flaunt my utter disrega rd of it wit h this flagrant hyperlinking. How disrespectful! How dare I?!

Just for good measure, I'll light the fuse on a Google-bomb: stupid hyperlinking policy. I encourage everyone to do the same.

Colossal surveillance network shields Olympics: Here's a fascinating article on the stunning level of technical surveillance and security in Athens during the Olympics.

This network collects and processes images and audio from more than 1,000 high-resolution and infrared cameras installed at different venues and on street corners. Calls made from mobile and landline phones in the area will be recorded and processed by the system.

Using software provided by UK company Autonomy, conversations can be converted into text and scanned for phrases that could be linked to terrorist activity.

[...] other undisclosed measures are undoubtedly in place, such as face recognition from video footage.

I was interesting to see Autonomy in there. At a previous job, I investigated their Bayesian search technology for an intranet. Via Boing Boing.
