Wither the Television?

Wither the Television? 02/01/2005 09:08 PM

Am I the only one whose television and DVD player is getting neglected these days? Lately, I've taken to watching both TV shows and DVD movies exclusively on my computer.

I don't have a really great set-up either. My monitor is a Gateway VX900T — a 19-inch Trinitron that I bought (used) five years ago. I also have an old Altec Lansing speaker system with a subwoofer that's so old I have to Scotch tape the input jack into the speaker.

What I do have going for me is a couch in my office on which I can sit about five feet from the monitor. This set-up and proximity is almost perfect for watching TV and movies on the computer.

I just watched "Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow" on DVD (great, great movie, by the way). That film was shot in digital, high defintion, and the resolution on my monitor was absolutely astonishing. The scene where Dex is escaping from the island and the Ark is launching in the background was so detailed it left me slack-jawed.

Television is just as good. I don't have a TV capture card, but that doesn't matter because I tend to just watch certain shows faithfully which I download. I've spoken he re before about my tendency to watch North Shore (more on this on my personal site), and I get spoiled because the torrents I download are all ripped from hi-def sources. Hi-def on computer monitors is amazing, and it leaves me disappointed when I have to actually watch the show on TV during its time slot.

Consequently to all of this, my television gets less and less use these days. Now, all I need is a remote control.

Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much
Towards Work

Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much
Towards Work
11/14/2003 02:51 PM
One of the downsides to the fact that people can work whenever they want is that it's sometimes hard for people to stop working. According to a study done in Europe, many overly stressed out workers are asking their bosses to cut their hours and salary just to gain back some control over their lives. Meanwhile, many bosses in IT are increasingly worried that their staff is going to burn out. Of course, a lot of that could be solved if companies hired more people, but they still seem hesitant to do so.

What women want from the Net (?!)

What women want from the Net (?!) 05/06/2004 03:07 AM
Yahoo threw a conference called "Real Women, Digital World" as a kind fo hyper-focus-group, in which a bunch of women were called in to explain What Women Want From The Internet. This on-site account is pretty funny.
Rachel, who gives her age as "almost 23," is a recent transplant to San Francisco from Chicago. She is dressed in jeans, sneakers, a T-shirt, a zip-up hoodie and a belt decorated with pink flamingos and palm trees. She gamely tries to explain to the suits clustered around her exactly what it is that she does on the Internet.

The short answer: Um, everything.

A habitué of Craigslist, Rachel says she has used the Net to find a roommate, find her apartment in Hayes Valley, and find her part-time job. If she gets lost and doesn't have Net access, she'll call a friend who does and ask her to go to MapQuest and get directions. She pays all her bills online and reads the news on S.F. Gate and N.Y. Times.com, two sites she doesn't even bother to refer to by the names of the newspapers they represent. She's selling a car online right now.

Rumors of rape fan anti-American flames "They are raping our women!" - This is the eternal tribalistic cry and lament, often all< /a> too true but also often used as a baseless or exaggerated claim for war propaganda, to incite to hatred of a "barbaric" enemy who commits unspeakable acts ( see The "Rape of Kuwait"). The history of Rape in Warfare is long and may be instinctually driven, at least in part. Now, mass rumors spreading through Turkey - which seem to have inspired a recent indigenous Turkish terrorist car bombing - allege mass rapes of Iraqi women by American troops. "There are more than 4000 rape events on the record" claimed the Turkish journal Yeni Safak, on October 22, "citing" (though the purported supporting citation contains nothing about such atrocities) internet sex therapist Dr. Susan Block's piece on the metaphorical " ;Rape of Iraq"[ Warning : preceding link is NSFW ! Here's the work-safe CounterPunch version]. Having more or less invented modern PR and propaganda techniques (see Ed. Bernays, Ivy Lee) - handy during both war and peace - Americans are now on the receiving end of Propaganda's use of the shameless lie. (identification of "mystery meat" links inside)

Where Are The Women VCs?

Where Are The Women VCs? 04/12/2004 03:44 AM
This won't come to a surprise to most people who have dealt with venture capitalists on a regular basis, but there are very few women VCs, and the numbers are actually decreasing. Since raising venture money is often about your personal network, some are suggesting that this is one of the reasons why women are having a tougher time getting their own businesses started - they don't have as many connections within the "old boys network" of venture money. This is definitely unfortunate (though, I will say that some of the smartest VCs I do know are women). Still, you would think that this would represent an opportunity for some enterprising VCs. If qualified, women-run companies aren't getting funded, then a smart VC firm (whether or not it had women partners) should try to search them out, as they may be more likely to find a worthwhile startup that other VCs will miss.

W is for women?

W is for women? 08/30/2004 07:23 PM
In an answer to feminist protests going on in New York this week, a group of 900 Republican women gathered on Monday at the Waldorf Astoria to hear about why women should rally behind George W. Bush. The "W Stands for Women" event featured an all-star line-up of Bush-Cheney chicas: the Bush twins, Jenna and Barbara, who sat silently on stage; the president’s sister, Doro Bush Koch, and mother, 76-year-old former first lady Barbara Bush; and Dick Cheney’s wife Lynne and daughter Liz. Their approach -- seducing desirable female voters with images of the President and Vice President as good-hearted, hen-pecked husbands and fathers whipped into shrugging submission by their estrogen-heavy clans -- was the kind of thing that might make Gloria Steinem gag. But it worked with this undeniably large gathering of women, who were rowdily relishing their electoral heft.

Look At That: There Are Women Online Too

Look At That: There Are Women Online Too 04/29/2004 02:42 PM
Not quite sure that this is really all that surprising, but Yahoo! has put together a study (mainly targeted at their advertisers) pointing out that women actually use the internet too. In fact, it's the "leading media of choice" among women, and overall comes only after work, sleep, and spending time with family as being the most important time spent. The study notes that women use the internet at work, and are good at multitasking - having work-related and non-work-related sites open at the same time and flipping back and forth between the two. They found that women believe surfing non-work sites at work is fine, since they tend to do more work outside of the office as well - and they're also spending more time at the office. The folks at Yahoo! seem positively shocked that women (gasp!) actually use search as well. "The other thing that I think that was a revelation [for us] and that has been a common consensus is that women are task-oriented, but this research shows that they do use the Internet for searching and browsing--it's not just for destination-related activities." And to think, before this, Yahoo! apparently thought that only men used search. Maybe all the women have been over at Google...

Women Want Wireless

Women Want Wireless 12/02/2003 12:18 PM
Wondering whether to go with chocolate or flowers for the special woman in your life? You might be better off going with a nice 3G mobile phone network. A new study by the folks at Siemens (who certainly are a bit on the biased side, since they want to sell more 3G equipment) says that women are big fans of what UMTS 3G wireless technology can do for them. However, they point out, the women are more interested in how the technology is useful, rather than what it is. This, of course, seems pretty obvious, and is exactly what we were talking about back in October when we wondered why anyone would bother doing a study looking at whether or not people knew what UMTS is. That doesn't matter. What UMTS is useful for is what matters - and apparently, the European women Siemens studied agree with us. Of course, it's no surprise to those of us at Techdirt that women like useful gadgets. For years, we've been pointing to study after study saying that "chicks dig gadgets." On the wireless front, earlier this year there was a study saying that women felt text messages showed how much the sender cared more than things like flowers and chocolate (though, that study seemed a bit questionable). Still, it's a bit more evidence that the stereotype of guys and their gadgets may be a bit outdated.

Women on Waves

Women on Waves 09/01/2004 08:36 PM
Portugal has a long tradition of protecting the human life. It was the first European country to abolish the death penalty, and more than 50% of voters rejected a 1998 referendum that would have liberalized abortion laws [en] (abortion is legal in Portugal if the pregnancy resulted from a rape, if it endangers the mother's life, or if the fetus is severely malformed; the morning-after pill is also legal). Now a Dutch boat from an organization called Women on Waves intends to pick women in Portugal, bring them to international waters (where the law of the boat's country applies: the Netherlands allows abortions for six weeks after conception, if not performed within 25 km from an Amsterdam hospital), perform abortions, and return them to land. The Portuguese government has refused entry to Women on Waves' ship, the Borndiep (previously Sea Change).
