Scholastic Corp. business unit Scholastic Education on Monday announced the release of READ 180 v1.6 for Mac OS X. It's a research-based "intervention program" for readers struggling to work at grade level in grades 4 and higher. The software has been previously available for Windows XP and 2000. READ 180 combines adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature and direct instruction in reading skills. Also new are Mac OS X-native versions of Scholastic Reading Inventory -- an assessment test for students in grades 1-12, and Scholastic Reading Counts!, a reading practice program.

FCC to survey American use of broadband

FCC to survey American use of broadband 04/12/2004 11:29 AM

The United States Federal Communications Commission ( FCC ) is starting a study of Americans' use of broadband internet connections.

The FCC plans to examine several issues not included in previous studies. One is the link between population density and technology deployment: Will installation of broadband telecommunications actually draw people and businesses to a geographic area?

Another new question is whether citizens and businesses are becoming increasingly dependant on commercial and government services that require broadband connectivity, such as videoconferencing.

Comments can be submitted through the FCC's comments filing page .

The gas distribution industry continues to seek out the most advantageous, economical gas meter reading method -- One unique outgrowth of Nethercomm’s evolving technology base is the ability for Broadband-in-Gas to provide a very accurate means of monitoring natural gas usage by end users; in essence eliminating the traditional need for on-premise meters and their costly reading. National Museum of the American Indians

National Museum of the American Indians 09/22/2004 02:56 PM
The National Museum of the American Indian opened on Tuesday. Although generally praised, the occasion did draw some mild concern that some groups are under-represented. The museum occupies one of the last few coveted spots on the National Mall. Washington Post collumnist Courtland Milloy comments on the contrast between the opening ceremonies for the museum in the home of the 'Redskins'. And I can't resist throwing in a plug for The Eiteljorg (flash splash screen) which is the only other museum with a partnership with the Smithsonian collection.
